  • Here is some preventative maintenance knowledge to save you some time and money in the long run. Nitro lovers rejoice! There are some small and not so small issues but with some predisposed knowledge there is much fun to be had. Known issues are all internal Transmission grub screws need loctite and the flanged bearings are thin and small. Wheels need balancing. Hex screws seem to strip out easily due to factory installation with power tools eventually replace them with new stainless ones from RCScrewz. Some screws have super strong Loctite on them and will not come loose. Front and rear differentials are sintered steel and can break from landing full throttle off jumps this goes for any RC vehicle. Transmission shift points need to be adjusted one turn more than suggested in manual after engine break in. Third gear replacement is non existent (HPI will make it later)at the moment so you will need to wait to get a new one or buy a hard to find whole 3 speed transmission or put a two speed in it. The two speed will be plenty! Two speeds seem to be easily available currently.
The Savage XL is a beast. Has new wider stance that helps handling, It has gobs of power! It doesn't need a three speed. A two speed is plenty. Pulls wheelies easily once broken in. Runs great once ran in and tuned in. Stock servos work great with Lipo receiver battery. There are a lot of aftermarket custom parts and hop ups for it. The body is solid with new design and molded protective roll bar and skids. Chassis can handle bashing. Tons of fun

We pulled my transmission apart before the first start up. Shimmed the gears and secured the grub screw. During the first run one of the flange bearings collapsed and it destroyed third gear. Now I have some Plaig ceramic bearings on order, see if that will fix it.

This is exactly how my savage transmission failed on my XL after 2 tanks. Absolutely must do this when you get a savage. Good video

About to pull the trigger on the new savage XL. Thank you for posting this. Looks like a teardown and tolerance check will need to be done before I ever fire up the engine. What are your thoughts on the new F5.9 engine? I've heard that it runs rich to lean.

It runs fine if the weather is 60 degrees or warmer. The stock plug is a cold plug. I put in the next step hotter plug and it ran perfect on 30% nitro in 50 degree weather. I ended up leaning it out to much with the hot plug and melted the engine. I never had a problem with the stock cold plug running it lean but it wasn't nearly as powerful and sometimes it would be hard to start and idle if I had the idle gap to small. It just needs to idle high with the stock plug and pipe. Its fine it makes plenty of power in stock form and is reliable.

2023 HPI Savage XL trying to help with some preventative maintenance with pros and cons. Great model. Runs great with lots of power and durability. Some issues that can be taken care of before hand will save a lot of frustration later on.
