  • We catch up with D. Wayne Lukas, after he gets off his pony following his last set of horses to train at Churchill Downs Saturday morning, to talk about winning his record-tying fifth Kentucky Oaks at age 86 with Briland Farm's Secret Oath. Lukas also discusses the possibility of running Secret Oath in the Preakness Stakes, with Ethereal Road also a candidate.

I'd like to know that when Secret Oath had that 4 furlong bullet work in :45 at Churchill if that's a marking point or cue for her to take off during the Oaks. If you watch Rich Strikes 17 length win last November it was from the rail in a one turn mile and if you watch his derby win it was exactly on the rail and looked exactly like his 17 length win last November. Guess you gotta work for D Wayne to get the answer

It would be great ot see a followup interview on what he thought about the Derby and Rich Strike's unbelievable win. I'm guessing he won't go to the Preakness because now he has another great horse to contend with.

Rich Strike just ran the race of his life. VERY likely never duplicate it. Has ZERO chance in the Preakness.

@@jaysantos536 I agree with that. I said it elsewhere. It was amazing how everything worked in Leon's favor. When that crowd of horses parted to let him through it was like Moses and the Red Sea. like the special effects in a Hollywood movie. RS is a great horse, but the chances of him getting through again will be much less. But I will be rooting for him.

@@jaysantos536 IMO the barn has made the right decision to skip Pimlico and aim for Belmont. If RS can win the Belmont his value as a sire will increase. His sire Keen Ice won the Travers & comes from a respectable line so a Belmont win would be a plus for RS especially if he can pass it to his get. RS seems like a fit & healthy horse with good handlers. I hope he wins again. Then let's go to Saratoga & The BC Classic in the fall. I see dollar signs in every direction.

Can you imagine the gazillions dollars D Wayne could have made with an Oaks Derby daily double by replacing e road with Rich Strike cause they both post 20! It reminds me of how my dad made so much money by betting the names of his dogs! Sometimes gotta throw the form away and go with the flow.

  • @bobpats7224

D Wayne darn you I got distracted by e road scratched out and didn't even look at #21 but the fact is Secret Oath worked out in :45 and Strike Rich won a mile in 1:37 at Churchill by 17 so one could say it was a workout so you subscribers to this station just learned something. Even with Bob Baffert out of the derby y'all can only reach 2nd place. The kentucky derby this year was a bullshit game . How can two of top contenders run such a fast qtr mile only to be caught in the end . I'll tell you why , because it's such a fixed game . It stinks all the way down here to Texas.

The answer to your question is this. It's horse racing. Fast pace and a brilliant ride by a jockey, that's how it happen. Watch and study the race. Leon made the right moves at the right time an he had a horse under him who had some run in him. Shalom
