Bowie actually wrote that song in Berlin about lovers separated by the Berlin Wall. He actual performed a concert at the wall once before it came down, and they could hear people singing along on the East Berlin side. That song will always be special in that city.

    • @dickiefears5832

They weren't separated by the wall. They were near the wall. In fact it was Tony Visconti, Bowie's producer who he spotted kissing a backing singer Visconti was having a fling with.

I was there 1987! It was more full of love than I can describe with words. David Bowie said words before playing "Heroes", I found them last year again, here they are:
" This is a special evening for us! Und wir schicken unsere besten Wünsche zu allen unseren Freunden, die auf der anderen Seite der Mauer sind."
      BOWIE LOVE FOREVER!

I got to that one too - my 18 year old niece was there (so she claims) because her mom went with me and she was born about a month later. The Bowie love runs deep in my fam. It was amazing. " in 1987, Bowie returned for the Concert for Berlin, a three-day open-air show in front of the Reichstag, he chose "Heroes" for his performance. By then the city's Soviet-dominated East had become safer, but it had not become more free. Rock music was treated as a destabilizing threat.
But the wall couldn't keep out radio waves; the West German-operated, US-run radio station Radio in the American Sector was popular in the East, and had secured rare permission from the performing acts to broadcast the show in its entirety. The concert was held near enough to the border that many East Berliners crowded along the wall to listen to the forbidden American and British music wafting across the city, allowing these two halves of the city to hear the same show, divided but together."
    --------- And ------------
"It was one of the most emotional performances I've ever done. I was in tears," Bowie later said of his performance in Berlin. He went on:
We kind of heard that a few of the East Berliners might actually get the chance to hear the thing, but we didn’t realize in what numbers they would. And there were thousands on the other side that had come close to the wall. So it was like a double concert where the wall was the division. And we would hear them cheering and singing along from the other side. God, even now I get choked up. It was breaking my heart. I’d never done anything like that in my life, and I guess I never will again.

Now you can treat yourself to the studio version, with Brian Eno on synth and Robert Fripp on guitar.
Want a heavy Bowie treat? "Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)" is a favorite Bowie album, largely due to how much Fripp contributed. Hell, even Pete Townshend of "The Who" played guitar on a song on this album.
But, do the title track "Scary Monsters". Great Bowie lyrics, crazy great Fripp guitar, great band.
"Because You're Young" is the song with Pete Townshend. Also a great choice from this album.

The very most important lyric to me
    (THE WHOLE ROMANCE OF THE
SONG) reminds me of the Falling of
the Berlin Wall (during the night of
    November 9, 1989, crowds of
    Germans began dismantling the
Berlin Wall, a barrier that for almost
30 years had symbolized the Cold
    War division of Europe.)
Can you imagine being part of the
history of that, and stopping 'freeze
    frame' and passionately making out
    with "your person" during that
moment? No matter what, "You are
you, and I am I. And if by chance we
    meet.. it is beautiful.”

Brother David was keen on what mystics and Sufis call "baraka transmission", and both he and band and audience were glowing examples of its healing properties. Brother Jon and Yes, and audience, were into some heavy baraka transmission, when, quite auspiciously, they played NYC 2 nights before 9/11. It actually helped. Progressives were and are readers of world philosophy, and audience matters are important for performers. Peter Brook at the Royal Shakespeare writes about it in his excellent books. Creation is done for the benefit of future generations such as yourself. Point is, when baraka is present, magic happens within the protective bubble. ~proud member of The Society of David Bs
