"Quote - I'm not powering the front speakers or the sub woofer from the amplifier'. I was very surprised to hear this comment after the review of the sound quality. That apart I enjoyed the video and found it informative.

Good point - I don't really know what the quality of the power amplifier for the front speakers are, since I am only using its pre-amp, with the Naim amp acting as a power amp.

Guys and gals have been in search of that perfect sound for a long time and the stuff available today is the best ever. Sadly, kids these days rarely experience audio better than what their phone and a pair of ear buds will play off the internet. There is no replacement for a high-powered system, playing from a high-quality source, into a set of good speakers, and feeling the pound and vibration of the sound surrounding your body.
I'm about due for a new Surround system receiver. My old Harmon Kardon is about 20 years old now. I have a mix of speakers, 6 Infinity, 1 Canton center and I just purchased a replacement Klipsch Subwoofer. I'm going to hang on to my old faithful Samsung 55" Plasma HDTV because it plays 3D movies which I enjoy from time to time out of my small collection of favorite movies in Blu-ray 3D. The glasses never bothered me and combined with the 7.1 audio, it's so much more fun and realistic watching a movie. Favorite 3D movies include Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Avatar 1, can't recall the others I have, Hart's War.
I still have an old system I bought in the late 70's. BGW tri Amp 750, 250, 100 into a UREI electronic crossover and EV 606D Sentry VI speakers. It tripled as home entertainment, studio monitors, and on stage sound re-enforcement. The system is 44 years old now but still works like a champ.
    Best wishes Steve and Sally.

Ive also have this amp. I think the audio quality with the frequency sweep to configure the EQ as well as the levels is a huge win, versus the older systems that do noise and set only levels. It improved the quality of the audio through my JBLs quite noticeably over my older amp. One tip I have is the setting of "small" or "large" speakers is not what you think it is. What it actually does, is controls the generation of a subwoofer channel from stereo input, such as vinyl. So I think you would always want your sub to be operational for stereo input, and so you always want to pick "small" speaker size, regardless of what you consider your speakers to be. Since I have done this having the sub operational for stereo is how it always should be. If the sub didnt get lower than the mains, why would you have a sub?!

Really good point about selecting speaker size. Thanks for that

I have the same unit and don't understand why you took a piece out of the speaker post to install banana plug since I was able to easily insert my banana plugs. I can't see Marantz recommending this. Happy listening.

There was a plastic cap in the middle of each post. They don't do anything and aren't permanently affixed, just little plastic caps that I guess Marantz slide into the 4mm holes to make it look tidier, but they have to be removed to insert the banana plugs because they fill the socket the banana plugs insert into. Maybe they only recently added this cosmetic "improvement" and your unit didn't have them. Annoyingly, for what is clearly designed to be a removable cap, it is difficult to get your finger nails around, hence having to use a knife to prise each out. Oh, and the manual doesn't talk about banana plugs at all, the instructions all assume you are inserting stripped wires into the posts rather than banana plugs - maybe that is what everyone does these days and the open 4mm sockets were confusing people?

How come it has all those HDMI cables on the back?

The TV had limited HDMI inputs, so I was routing the Blu-ray player, cable TV, Amazon, CCTV and computer through the amplifier

@@SteveSallyandSmokey So if I get this amp, the only socket I'd need to use to connect to the tv would be the optical?
