- Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, is the unofficial lightning capital of the world. There, lightning strikes occur, on average, 300 days a year. When dangerous storms approach, most people flee. But 21-year-old Jonas Piontek does just the opposite. The German photographer stays put in the face of certain danger to capture amazing photographs of the electric storms.

I wish the situation of Venezuela could get better so everybody could see the spectacular lightning orchestra themselves.
A place for storm tourism for sure. It would bring nice income to the locals and be an experience one would not easily forget. Kina the same thing as the Aurora Borealis, which is much rarer though...
Venezuela has many spectacles. the Tepui Mesa which is where Angel Falls is located
and the beautiful Venezuelan women
Sad
nothing prevent you to go there
it's not Syria or Yemen
less talk, more lightning
What an album name
I could NOT agree more! Well said!

Lost In Space🚀🚀 brought me here! 😀👍
Same here man!! 😂😂 merry xmas
DNA Cowboy same haha
Kowlessur Rajiv merry Christmas! 👍
DNA Cowboy same wtf
DNA Cowboy great minds think alike
This is just incredible. I loved it when he said it is the one thing Humanity can’t influence. I would love to experience it feeling all the amazing electricity in the air. He captures unbelievable beauty .
2010 the effect completely disappeared, likely related to drought, so our mistakes CAN influence this too
Such a beautful sight, i can only imagine what it feels like being there in person.
Void Gambit im from maracaibo and ud shit ur pants for sure 😂 i wish i was joking
It's scary. No kidding...
That description "it's like a living creature"... fits perfectly
Man scary my ass , I love heavy storms. And I would die to see that
TRAP KILLA literally
No, he's just leveling up his magic stat
That place from One Piece is real
I see you are man of culture as well.
Literally came here after thinking about that one piece island...and found you here
Nice
Raftel?
@@mikalcarney7301 nah one of the first islands in the new world where it rains lightning near constantly. Luffy would have gone there if not for getting sidetracked on Punk Hazard island. It was briefly shown when Urouge tried going there, and when Smoker was waiting there expecting Luffy
I've seen this lightning from the distance all my life. Beautiful.
i once saw a lightning storm while on a flight. one of the most spectacular things i've ever seen.
nice video and cheers Jonas!
But do you saw it from above the storm? Or just from medium range?
HELL NO. I remembered the turbulence I had on that flight . I thought we were going to die. Like some final destination shit.
@@Forever18or21 what u said
@@Forever18or21 LMFAOOO
Same. It was off in the distance and looked incredible because we were higher up than the storm. So I got to see it from above. Really beautiful.
Going there is definitely on my to-do list!
Barry Allen Fastest Man On Earth
i dont advice you going there...i live in that country if you dont get kidnapped by the government you will be killed by a common thug

@@SaraH-rz1kz sorry Sara, good luck in the new year. God bless you and give you strength.
Sara C hope there best for you. I was thinking the same thing as the commenter mention. Situations are similiar here in S.E.A. but things are improving. Hope the same for you!
I lived in Barquisimeto Venezuela which is 180 miles from that area of Maracaibo Lake and in a clear night you can see the glare of all that lighting all night, amazing
Not only is he a great photographer, he is also a great narrator. You could tell that he is not just taking pictures, but also feeling the moment while he's at it.
He also speaks English really well.
And handsome 😉
The sky is such a beautiful place. From clouds that can shape and look like the homes of giants. To the storms that could make the sky bleed water or flash thunderous lightning for miles. It’s such a beautiful thing
I'm a huge weather buff! I must see this place in my lifetime!
4:16 - 4:17. The image with the greatest impact in the entire video. It exudes a feeling of power and ruthlessness. It's exhilarating. It makes my heart beat harder than usual.
Yeah, that's about as awesome as one can imagine. And you know there are ten thousand moments every night that are even better. I want to go there!
From Aruba and Curaçao, you can always see lots of lightening far south of the islands. (I assume it's these storms)
When you think lightning, it's mostly fear. But it's so beautiful here, the way this "lightning symphony" is captured...amazing. thanks for this.
free electricity
Unicorn Workhorse free charging
Unicorn Workhorse free death
There has to be a way to harness that power!
merlinsdog yes I believe there is
tesla
I'd like to see more of the storm, less of his biography
I can honestly say that lake Maracaibo Venezuela is a place I want to see and experience I love what mother nature can show off
He said "You will feel very small when you're facing a huge storm" and man did I feel that.
This is where electric eels are produced😋
Jonas is a rather inspiring fellow, I wish I had a career doing something I knew I loved, traveling the world trying to find what I was looking for.
You still can. It's not too late :)
I agree, it is never too latee. I believe in you and so does God❤
I'm glad they got to feature you here...I. love this channel and I've followed this guy on IG and his posts are just amazing
As a photographer i think that's amazing!!!

@@sentrypeer haha. definitely Lost In Space :)
Absolutely Beautiful!
I'm here cause I'm actually from Maracaibo, not from Lost in space, lol, but grateful the show mentions us👋🏼
Lightning starts at an astonishing 2:26 minutes into the video about lightning.
Thanks alot. U saved me some times.
what they show lightning from like 20 seconds in?
What an amazing young photographer. Great job!
This is what made me make a storm channel, from inspiration of great people like that guy in video!!!
That would be an awesome place to visit...I love watching lightning.
Actually I have been living in venezuela for almost 35 years and is sadly to say but I never been there before, because is really danger to travel there and I not talking about the lightning storm or electricity............... and believe me I really like to be there some day and enjoy the view of the amazing and beauty of nature, maybe some people don't understand what I try to say but I undertand me myself...!!! greetings from the capital.....
You're a boy from the capital who would think going to a more isolated place is more dangerous than staying at Caracas. But it's actually in Caracas where most crimes are commited. I'm not saying there is absolutely safe but it isn't more dangerous than going to any other place in Venezuela.
cual es el peligro, roban a la gente?
@@LuisanaMcbo tengo 4 meses en caracas y no he experimentado ningun tipo de peligro hasta el momento, creo que la crisis ha acabado con los malandros tambien
Season 2 of Lost In Space has brought me here.
Lightning: I will smite you!
Me: No please! I respect you lightning!
Lightning: Fine, I will let you go this time.
Fascinating video. I never knew the mountains and lake atmosphere can do that. A Majestic scene turned into art!
How many of relate this with One Piece, New world.
Lost in space is my favorite show ever. It's beautiful. And thanks to the show, I'm here , learning about lighting. Cool!
Lighting doesn't strike the same place twice.
Catatumbo: hold my storm.
Amazing!! I was born in Venezuela in Zulia State, is actually the state where the Catatumbo lighting live, I used to see the lighting from my back yard in Machiques, is something spectacular.
Lost in space
They should have a tv show
They are sponsored, backed and produced by TWO very large TV networks...CNN & The Weather Channel. I think this is their TV show.
Although I have no desire to come home to Venezuela permanently, I do hope one day it'll be safe enough to be able to come visit this place.
The crazy thing about this is if you do happen to get the same photo twice that’s even more amazing then having every image be it’s very own.
Who else came for the lightning show because of "Lost In Space"😂
Me 😂
I came for cos of lost in space
Love your job... I'm amazed with what you had captured like no other... Thanks for capturing one of the many beauties of my own country 🇻🇪 that I have may be seen twice (no appreciating it the way you did). There are many other beauty things as {Roraima, angelfalls (waterfall), Orinoco&Caroni rivers, Guacharo Cave miseries...} And so many more natural creations that many people in the very country do not know, nor appreciate...
Perhaps... Every single country in this planet has an extraordinary beautiful special "thing" but no one to appreciate (because of their busy lives)... Earth needs more people like you... To pause and appreciate "natural creations"... Care for it... And pass the experience for future generations...
Thanks for changing...
Spn: Me suscribí, me gustaron tus videos. And the música is wow!
When you’re from Maracaibo and have seen it 😏
These nearly nightly storms are vital to Mother Earth's well being. Not mentioned in the video, more nightly Ozone is produced here than anywhere else on the planet.
That is amazing
You've always thrown everything you could at me! Well, I can take it, and now I can give it back! Come on! STRIKE ME! You've never held back before!
ZUKO #AVATARFANSASSEMBLE

That is amazing.
It's always great when I start deep diving into searches about something because of a Netflix show. Thanks to Netflix Original Lost in Space I am here.
This is Jupiter 420 and we are here to blaze it. Any other Jupiters out there that are High in Space? Ugh woops I ment Lost in Space?
Pretty friggin' awesome!
"One of the greatest experiences. Sitting here at night, watching the stars with continuous lightning flashing all around you." Until the thunder strike you.
How to be a great weather photographer:
1) Buy the latest, high-end equipment
2) Just be in the right place at the right time
3) Point and shoot
That's it.
It is also known as the Maracaibo Lighthouse, since the boats that sailed the area could sail during the night without problems at the time of sailing. It can occur up to 260 times a year and lasts up to 10 hours per night; In addition, this phenomenon can reach 60 downloads per minute.
Catatumbo lightning is a meteorological phenomenon that occurs in the lake basin of Maracaibo in Venezuela, mainly in the south of said lake and in the lower basin of the Catatumbo river, from which its name comes.
here the complete wiki in Spanish can translate it es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rel%C3%A1mpago_del_Catatumbo
You tried so hard to be edgy but it just didn’t work out, too bad you suck at everything you do.
I'm a little late but Lost In Space brought me here and I'm glad to know such a strange thing of our Nature.
This is awesome and creepy in the same way, my chest got heavier when I finished the video, I'm afraid of lightning and storms. D: ^^
This must be Zeus’ vacation spot.
Lol yes. Also why does this comment only have 1 like? WTF.
Look at that, Zeus is getting busy again
I have total respect for him and his incredible art. Those photographs are amazing and beautiful and I am very happy that he survived the expedition. That place on earth is actually uninhabitable. I can’t imagine how any humans or animals can live there under those conditions. Wow.
It's not uninhabitable hundreds of thousand of people live in the area. Try a look at a map or two. You may find it some benefit
I just can’t explain how much I love lightning 🌩 , but this guy almost has the description down to a T .
Nice work!
Omg just by hearing that guy's accent I knew he's German ( confirmed by description ) 😂😂
Blue Slushy also confirmed by the video that says Germany is his hometown.
jwin_the_pro Germany is a country. not a 'hometown', even though it may contain many of them.
His name sounds Polish to me I think it means Friday but I can be wrong.
GERMANY IS MY CITY
@Aurora Borealis, yes, his name is Polish. He's of Polish decent. But he was born and lives in Germany.
Lost in space brought me here😂
Literally going to Venezuela just to witness this greatness.
Tampa Bay area, Florida is America's lightning hub. I've been here 17 years, obsessed with lightning since I could remember at 4 years old. We get amazing lightning storms here, every day, but for only 4 months a year. October is a depressing month for me. 8 more months until the Florida mountains return!
After falling in love with the storm......They got married!
I am here because "Lost in the Space" 🤣
Lightning is one of the most spectacular things i have ever seen.
Every night I remember we used to see it from the area I used to live in Grenada 🇬🇩.. always used to wonder why every night that used to happen.. we thought was Trinidad 🇹🇹 because they was south of us... but all the time it was Venezuelan
Build there Tesla device and no more electricity bills!
people power
good idea for the people in that area since in venezuela most people barely have electricity. im lucky to have left before things really worsened
Amazing all the mysteries in the world.
I spend an enormous amount of time on the Internet researching all kinds of weird phenomena and I am always surprised by new discoveries and yet I have never even heard about this MARACAIBO until today.
If TESLA were still alive he would know what this is all about, and more importantly, he would know how to harness this limitless source of energy for the benefit of mankind.
Obviously this nightly continuous lightening storm tells us something about the tremendous constant energy potential difference that exists between the IONOSPHERE and the surface of the earth and should be a " lightening rod " for scientists to use as a clue as to how the whole earth is one giant LEYDEN jar that would provide us with unlimited free electricity if we only figured out how to tap into it.
C'mmon you electrical engineers...solve this mystery already and bring us into the next phase of human technological development. Let's lose the WIRES and the reliance on fossil fuels...give us FREE LIMITLESS ENERGY...it is literally all around us waiting to be captured.
I cannot screw in a light bulb, but after reading Tesla's writings and studying his patents for years, I understand his ideas about the earth's energy potential on a GESTALT basis; his concept for transmitting electricity along the earth's resident standing waves etc, but I cannot translate any of this into a practical device.
This is the job of the electrical engineers and they should be ashamed that they still cannot duplicate what TESLA did over 100 years ago....OR CAN THEY ? DOES IT ALREADY EXIST but is being concealed from us for obvious reasons ?
@@SaraH-rz1kz Yikes
Who will give us this magical "free limitless energy", also where and how they will get us "free limitless energy"? And how are you going to transfer all this "free limitless energy" if not with wires? It must be magical electricity with brains! We already have nuclear fission which is pretty good, but the best bet we have is nuclear fusion which would solve all our energy needs for thousands of years if you can come up with a stable reactor. But no one knows when that's going to happen, some are definitely trying.
That's like the one that hit us last night. You could feel the heat and the electricity in the air. Amazing stuff!. This guy has the same fascination for going out in storms like I have. Nature is cool and it is about trying to get the "perfect shot" but I reckon it's luck, right place right time.
The more you're out in it the better the averages and hence the luck 😉
Had no idea about this until I started watching lost in space
Zeus is angry at something...
GD Frantix probably at the Venezuelans
for centuries
He's angry at Kratos

Oh man that's beautiful
Nice weather with lightning and thunderstorm 🤩
Thor's messing up the place 😂
2:15 deez nuts got eehm lol
Great video about a photographer. Way more interesting than the lightning.
Would love to witness a that. Great video!
Did you guys know that if the lighting is positive it moves up instead of down but it's so fast that it's invisible but when the lighting is negative it does travel down its not has fast so we can see it go down...
Lightning charge has nothing to do with the direction it travels nor its speed.
I am not & will not watch your TWC on tv. Commercial after ad after sponsor after ad after commercial after... you get it. But I like this video!
Beautiful....woooow!
I guess that’s where I gotta go to overcome my fear of lightning
I never knew this place existed...I want to move here

It’s beautiful to look at, but so dangerous! On the news they always warn people to head indoors for severe weather, but this guy stayed outside through it all 😩
