I heard her perform both Ravel piano concertos last summer in Edinburgh. She was phenomenal.
Prokofiev is my favourite composer. I've watched Yuja play this toccata lots of times and I never tire of hearing it. 😀😀

My wife and I were so lucky to attend 25 concerts and recitals played by her...each better than the other....she's really the Queen of Piano!....And a fashion icon! Why not?

Yuja Wang in my opinion is one of the best pianists of all time! But she also is a woman and there is NO REASON for critisising a woman for how she styles herself. She could perform in an industrial overall - that would not diminish her achievements. So why take offense in her being beautiful? - I don't understand it.

If you want some more Prokofiev, listen to his piano sonata no. 8 in B-flat major; it's one of his most adventurous compositions, and not that widely known. Yuja Wang has an excellent rendition of it here on RUclips.
People like that who comment on women's outfits (because I doubt they would comment on men's outfits like that) are really just sexist. I don't know what the comment was, of course, but I'm guessing it had to do with how a woman is supposed to look a certain standard of beautiful, but also not too beautiful ("sexy") because that's improper or distracting according to them.
I didn't know this piece, but Yuja Wang really manages to build tension and add texture throughout.
Do you think sexism is literally the reality in which men mainly pay attention to the female body? That is, sexism is the norm. You know, many musicians were extremely sexist. Scriabin or, for example, Prokofiev often drew attention to "pretty" girls. I hope you won't listen to them anymore.

It's not a matter of sexism. There's just a certain level of respect that one has to show the audience, and part of that is dressing appropriately while performing at freaking carnegie hall. It has nothing to do with the fact that she is a woman
@@alekpoko2655 Sure, sexism is often the norm, because of the history of men having more power and women being judged as lesser, which still influences today. And one of the ways sexism shows up is that women, especially successful women, are more harshly judged than men, and that judgement often extends to their appearances. But it's not because that's the norm that we shouldn't challenge the norm. Also, I very purposefully said "people" and not "men" because it's not just men who make such judgements and comments; women are just as guilty of it.
And yes, I am very much aware that lots of composers (or writers or artists) were sexist. But I don't think that means you can't enjoy what they were good at. You can enjoy the art without approving of everything the artist thought and did, especially with something like music.
@@vegrl Sure, I'm not saying people should perform in jeans and T-shirt. And like I said, I don't know what exactly the comment was that people made about her outfits, but Yuja Wang always wears very nice dresses that are appropriately "chique" for the venues she performs at. If people comment on the *type* of dress she wears and how much skin it shows, that *is* because she's a woman.
Dave Hurwitz (www.youtube.com/@DavesClassicalGuide) has recently made not one but TWO videos on the very topic of sexist comments about Yuja Wang's outfits.
In the end musicians, particularly soloists, are ENTERTAINERS. Yes, classical music can have pretensions of quasi-religious profundity, mind-opening enlightenment, or some educational value, but let's face it: who wants to go to a concert for just those reasons, if it's not also highly entertaining? Yuja Wang is entertaining, from her strut to her clothes to her abrupt bow to her natural beauty and, not in any way least, her incredible, awe-inspiring talent at the keyboard, to produce excitement and wonder in the listener.
Comments about her clothing mostly seem to come from the same people who can't stand the thought that ANY woman or non-white performer could have the same musical quality or talent as the "legendary" old white men of the past (let alone MORE talent).
I couldn't have said it better myself - why should anyone care what Yuja wears (it's not just men but women who moan about her outfits)...just listen to her play. And she is phenomenal. Really one of the greatest pianists of our time.
once you get Prokofiev he's there with you forever. It's like the other supreme master Haydn... once you hear a few pieces you are hooked.
Completely agree on the attire. If you are offended then listen to the studio recording. A concert experience is as much about the visual as it is the aural. If visual did not matter the soloist would turn the lights off while playing. It is part of the overall experience.
Please listen to Anton Bruckner next! I suggest two pieces as your introduction, Symphony No.7 (you and anybody else absolutely must try to listen the Adagio atleast once in their life) for instrumental and Te Deum for choral. His symphonies might be long, but believe me it is more than just worth it.
Please try Prokofiev concerto no 1 played by Argerich at la Roque d'Antheron! Or, otherwise, Prokofiev concerto no 3 always by Argerich

I know exactly which Instagram post that was! It’s crazyrude and disrespectful too. I’m an old fashioned gal, and I admit I’m not fond of her outfits- bit too revealing for me, but she backs it up with technique, and YES, MUSICALITY! So she can wear what ever the heck she wants! Plus,we are only young and beautiful for a short time, let her enjoy it, her ability and artistry will go on long after she decides to wear longer skirts.

Why do you think it's THAT important to be close to the composer's version? It's an art, and there's nothing wrong with playing differently than the composer did, as long as the interpretation is beautiful and makes sense IMO

I don't think her interpretation is beautiful either way, and makes much sense, if you understand the meaning of the composition and the composer's personality/essence.
@@pablobear4241 it is not math, isn’t? There are different ways to perform the piece, but there is no 1, gold-standard performance, even if it is the performance of the composer. Of course it is important and useful for performer to know about this performance tho

@@Draspber Well if Yuja knew about this performance, it's completely against what Prokofiev played like. Zak and Gilels, even Nikolayeva and Horowitz are much closer to the intention of the composer. Yuja is not close to Prokofiev at all, she is playing to impress uncultured audiences for $$$$$$$.
