The Lisbon/Lisboa had me tripped up for a while.
I thought the three themed answers were somehow describing each volleyball move, instead of simply being a synonym for them. For example when you set the ball you sort of stand up straight to do it, a stand up act. When you spike the ball you surge up and hit it with power. The correct interpretation is much more straightforward.
I very much wanted 9D to be a reference to the character of Héloise in Protrait de la jeune fille en feu. Alas, "Marianne" would not fit.
I struggled with this one when i put ‘BORAX’ instead of ‘BOTOX’ and did not notice until 15 minutes in
You're so cool and collected with good-humor as always, but I am oddly curious what your authentic "un recorded" reaction was when you discovered the start button wasn't pressed! I'm imagining a mild face plant with a "DOH!" :)
Things happen. Good recovery. As usual, some things I’d have never seen.
I don't see the wordplay in 65A. Is the question mark there purely to hint that 'sacrifice' is an odd synonym for 'kill' in this context? The phrase "sacrifice a fly" isn't supposed to sound like another phrase or anything like that, right?
In baseball, a batter may "sacrifice a fly" by hitting the ball into the outfield to provide a runner the opportunity to get home from third base.
@@davescrams ah ha, thank you!
I watched the entire vid for an explanation of “ital” 😅
