This is exactly what I needed, I've drawn anime before and judging by my own portfolio, it was missing that pizzazz, which I couldn't figure out until I realized that I was not drawing enough anime, and focusing a bit too much on the fundamentals. It was almost like how artists who get accustomed to drawing anime study the fundamentals second, but in my case it was the exact opposite. Biggest plot twist tho in this vid is to not think about structure cause I would think that construction would be the way to accelerate my progress.
FYI Ai while yes is trained on master works, is also trained on a 6 year olds stick figure and now ai images themselves. Also ai images often have the uncanny effect anyway because there is no intent in the image.
I also have that same problem of going from realistic and brain just goes kaput trying to draw anime art. Thank god I stumbled your video, blessed with kuno insights
fantastic video, as someone who was taught to paint, render and design in a more western concept art way I kept overworking and over thinking accuracy and correctness for forms and lighting. Your video helped put into words the stuff that I've been figuring out while trying to learn a more anime style!! Fantastic video!
Great stuff as always, it's cool to see all the differences and struggles changing from realistic to anime style as I started with anime and I'm trying to do some more realistic pieces right now. I'm by no means a great artist but if you want to do more anime stuff and improve at it i would recommend to fiddle a lot with the eye shape/size and placement throughout the drawing process, since the faces are so simple, moving one eye a few pixels or tilting it slightly can make a big difference. Another thing that helped me a lot is paying more attention to line art more specifically it's stroke quality and line weight. The line art really does a lot of heavy lifting in anime. If you want some resources you might want to check out tutorials from actual illustrators like naoki saito (begginer friendly, has subtitles) or kakage (no subtitles, but youtube auto translate is usually good enough). However anime style is a wide spectrum so probably not everything will be helpful. Comment got pretty long, but hopefully it might be of use for someone. I'm going to be waiting for more great videos from you!
good tips! I, like you, started with more portraits/figure drawing more in the realism word. Having switched to more of an anime style over the years, the jaws have ALWAYS baffled me 🤣 Anyone learning this might consider practicing cartoon and chibi style faces to break even further from the need for structure (if you’re heavy on the realism side) to learn the visual appeal side of things.
I'm looking thru the comments and SOMEBODY gotta say it. So I will. That Frieren piece was actually GOOD. Idk what bro talking about he doesn't like it. I liked it a lot.
The way you drew frieren was already great don't restrict yourself and force yourself to go specifically by the quote on quote traditional way of drawing anime the way you paint the face and add that extra element to your work is already great
Hey, it's really great that you included the tips from your experienced friend! Thanks! The faces are really tricky. It's like they are 2D but still some 3D principles apply. I guess that's why game characters' faces (like in Genshin and other anime-style games) look rather weird from a low angle. However, the rest of the body is absolutely following a well-defined structure and perspective.
Your Line Art looks really heavy. Thats why it looks like cartoon rather than anime (I think). If you don't want to use thinner lines you can just give them more colour. ONe way is with making the line art an overlay layer (preferably with a layer underneath with the same lineart but in black with lower opacity) or you just paint it in lighter colour. That a thing I leanrt and it can give a really cool touch to the piece :)
Anime itself has many different styles. Sometimes they draw a nose firmly and others have no nose, or just a dot. For example Gochiusa. Yeah, depend to their author. 😅
I've been watching and applying anatomy too much lately, and it stresses me out when trying to apply it to anime style because there are some things that clash in my brain, my brain becomes too concerned with small things that should not be used in 2d form, fortunately this video refreshes my mind again, thank you.
I love thes kinds of vids and it really helps me alit. Some of the things that are mentioned maybe just simple but it truly hit me in realisation. I hope I can also draw like you in the future.
Dude this is an amazing video! I have the same issue were I put a very large emphasis on structure in 2d forms. It ends up making my work look so stiff
Hii thanks for the valuable info it really helped me understand how to do more semi realistic art , I had question regarding dtyis can I draw her with a sword and a armour or should I draw in her casual clothes ?
Anything is allowed as long as it doesnt stray too far from her design, i think armor and sword could work if she still has the same personality/attitude👀
loved the video!! I was really in need of these advices, and your colors are AMAZING ! I was wondering tho if the giveaway is international? Keep up the good work !! 😌

Question for the giveaway, is it supposed to be posted on a specific social media? Or it doesn't matter which one, and as long as i have the # it's fine? I was thinking on posting in Instagram but i didn't knew if it's okay for you or if it's the best place to do it! (I will guess it'll be twitter since your acc it's there!)

@@solarydays That is true, I am guilty of over-analyzing art as well. It is what slows down my progress for the most part.
Not rlly a giveaway when it’s more of a competition of already good artists😭
