- In 2016, Mark Bradford began a partnership with Rio Terà dei Pensieri, a non-profit cooperative that creates work opportunities with and for people currently and recently incarcerated in two prisons in Venice. Called Process Collettivo, the ongoing project builds upon Rio Terà’s existing activities to raise further awareness of and support for the organization’s work.
To celebrate Bradford’s eight-year partnership with Rio Terà and their vital work, the artist has created a new edition, ‘Borsa,’ to raise funds for the organization. Made in collaboration with Berengo Studio in Murano-an island off Venice known as one of the world’s leading centers of glassmaking-this new edition consists of 30 glass sculptures of tote bags, a reference to both the PVC tote bags made in the workshops at the men’s prison and the branded totes ubiquitous at international art events such as the Venice Biennale. Bradford’s edition features an etching of tallies on its surface, symbolizing the temporality of incarceration.

Always nice to see new Mark Bradford content. Great. Thanks Hauser & Wirth!
wow as someone born in Italy, who grew up in the US, i'm impressed that he worked with Italian prison collectives like this. and the Venetian glassblowers, and the bag. just the whole thing is really interesting for an American to orchestrate.
Bradford is AMAZING
