One thing I forgot to add regarding paint: regular layer paints shouldn’t be used as primer! Make sure you get one that is actually labeled as such, as it has a texture to it that is made to hold your layer paints.
For my friends starting out I tend to tell them to go to Hobby Lobby or Walmart for brushes. Likely, early on, people wont have brush shampoo to care for their brushes and likely wont know how to load their brushes without nuking the ferule (even after 15 years I'm still bad at this). So crappy synthetic brushes are better for beginners IMO. Nothing feels worse than ruining a Windsor and Newton Series 7 in one session. Also, I let them know, that stuff not meant for our hobby are also really good. I use tons of make up and acryllic nail art brushes on top of paint brushes. So a stop at Walmart for a pack of 10 brushes for 5 bucks is never a wasted stop. Cheap make up brushes are great dry brushes. Nail art/eyeliner brushes are FANTASTIC for tiny details and you can get them on the super cheap.

My advice is to look at what gunpla and scale modelers use, their stuff is often better for lower prices.
