    For all the Origin 5C owners out there who are not happy with their sound - turn bass, mid & treble all the way up and only use the volume/boost and tilt for "tone". Experiment to get the perfect treble balance with your guitar tone knob & the tilt control. If you crank it all the way, use the volume pot on your guitar as gain control. Thank me later ;)

      : Bass, middle , treble all way up ? If that's only option then better NO. Did you see the face of guitarist who is inspecting the amp sound? He could not hide his reaction.

    I own this amp and bought it because I love the clean tones it produces. I use it primarily at home just noodling while I sit around and I really like it! I don't play that loud and never play with distortion so it suits me fine. For the price you can't beat it. Good video though and listen to how nice the Clean sound is...Thanks for the video...

    A manufacturer could release a near perfect practicing and recording guitar amp with an 8" speaker and the size queens would still be screaming in the comments of the youtube review about how it's so terrible in every way and would sound way better if it had a bigger speaker. Even funnier these people have never so much as sniffed the amp they are bashing most of the time.

      Guitar players are cultish.
      They all have a narrow view of what's acceptable and good.
      Especially younger players.
      Ask any guitar player to name the best guitar player ever and a riot will break out.
      To me these BEST anything doesn't exsist.
      It is truly personal but herd mentality kicks and people want to be in herd they identify with and of course their herd is 100% right.
      I guess it applies for all of humanity in ever respect of life.

    I literally just played this through this amp in the local music store & was blown away by how good it sounded. I was utterly convinced thanks to youtube that I had to get something of serious size to get a good tone, but because of budget contrainsts that meant I would have to go solid state. Plugged into a Fender Champion 100 & a Boss Katana 100 212 first & was REALLY dissapointed, they both sounded SOOO solid state in person. Salesman convinced then to try an all valve amp of similar cost then & put this amp in front of me. It sounded fantastic from the moment I started playing & only got better as I played around with it. I still havent pulled the trigger yet & purchased it, but I likely will. I am shocked at the degree to which you cannot believe what you see & hear online, play through one in person, your whole perspective might just change on this amp. I am convinced now I have to get a valve amp anyway, more than ever.

      I feel the need to add the fact that I ended up buying a PRS MT15, & even then it wasn't 100% perfect. What changed it all was a JHS little black amp box. That instantly cut background noise hissing & gave alot more control to the master volume. Can't recommend it enough.

    What do you think about this? I also have a shootout versus the Bugera V5 amplifier coming up which will be interesting to say the least. All of the Origin series amps are on the way. I only had the amps for one full day but I have them all coming up this week. 😎🎸 I give my thoughts at the end of the video what I think of it. I much preferred having pedals in the front of the amp than the amp tones alone but let me know what you think of it.

      The 50 watt combo has a good speaker. It may make for a good rehearsal amp with pedals. I can not say that for the 5 and 20 versions which seem lacking. Even the Anderson's guys pointed that out.

  • @johnballantyne3458
    @johnballantyne3458 6 лет назад +1

    I think it sounds pretty cool, you just have to understand what the amp is and set your expectations accordingly. A 5 watt amp with a small speaker is always going to sound small and boxy and the low end is going to fart out if you turn it up. That's just the way it is. If you think it's going to have the same kind of sound/feel as a big amp but just with less volume, you're going to be dissapointed. But sometimes that "cranked small amp with a farting out speaker" is what you want. If so, this thing does the job.

  • @michaelcarey9359
    @michaelcarey9359 2 года назад +1

    If you get the chance, definitely buy one of these, just plug it into a 2x12" cabinet, THEN crank it up like he does here, and BE-F'n-HOLD some glorious tones at 5 watts.
    Really, speakers less than 12" are for toys, not musical instruments, which is why this just doesn't cut it after a certain point.

    Great video as always. Bought that amp, sold it immediately. Never found 8 inches enough and certainly not in a Marshall. I can handle tight 10's in a Fender, but with a Marsh I always want the mushy swampy 12. But you do get some nice tones out of the beast.

    This was originally a response to brandon, below. But seeing as there are so many people bitching bout the 8" speaker I thought I'd re-post the gist of it here. Marshall have recently made a 5 watt combo with a 12"; and it was totally sick. It was the SL5 (Slash), (if you can find one, they weren't in production long). EL34 , 2 channel, reverb, 1 or 5 watts and a 12" Vintage 30. Nice sounding amp. BUT they weren't cheap. At the time the forums were full of people bleating about paying a grand ($NZ) for a 5 watt combo, but at least they weren't complaining about the size of the speaker.

  • @electricurinal
    @electricurinal 6 лет назад +4

    I think Marshall kind of jumped the shark by pairing the 5w with a 8" and the 15w with a 10". They wanted to compete with Fender and other low-watt small combos, but were more worried about competing with themselves apparently... so they've made it easy to decide... on a Fender... in that power range at least.

    It’s really cool to test this serie, thx you so much for your work and opinion. But i dont understand your choice on the 5c and the 20c. 50c or heads are the way to go with this serie. Anyway you did a Great work, thank you. I like the tone of these amps. But you need closed V30 or Greenback CAB for these amps! I prefer without FX, like AC/DC.
    For me, best choice are heads : 20 w for house, 50w for gig. Marshall didnt made good choices for their speakers in these combo, in my opinion. It's why i have ordered the 20w head for home. I ll probably take an Orange PPC 112 for old school tone. I prefer Greenback but in 1x12, i doubt it ll resist long to a 20w head.

    I like the idea of having an affordable plexi type amp but Marshall kind of dropped the ball in regards to the size of the speakers the 5 watt should've at least had a 10" speaker and the 20 and 50 should've gotten 12" speakers. I may consider buying one, but I did recently find a used Marshall class 5 combo for under $350 at a store near me.

    Thanks for your review. The Origin series was meant to go back to where it all started. And that wasn't exactly with an 8 inch speaker :-) If you want some of that "good ole" Marshall sound, it needs a decent speaker and yes, EL34 or KT-66 valves / tubes. EL34 's came in because of a shortage on KT66's. My Origin 50 Head will be delivered Wednesday in my favourite Music Store. I'll let you know my opinion afterwards. It will be connected to a real 4x12 cab with Greenbacks. I know there is popular demand for lower wattage valve / tube amps, but a 5 Watt amp and a (probably cheap) 8" speaker can never do the original sound justice. I just hope to get a "plexi-like" sound, without letting (literally) my ears bleed. Just my two cents / pennies :-) Great channel Shane!

      I agree how do you jam a Plexi into a combo amp. Their first attempt was taking the JMC 800 and putting it in a 112 combo. How could that ever make sense it was designed for a 4-12 cabinet. Good luck with your 50 watt head. I think that's the only way to go if you're going to buy one of these amps.

    Just spent an hour plus with the Origin 20C at Guitar Center. There was a kid playing thru the Origin 5W on the other end of the room as well ... so I got a chance to hear that one too. The one I played was held for me; I demo’d it straight out of the box.
    I’m was not impressed at all; seems like NAMM hype to my ears. $650 for a non-existent warm tone seems a bit rich to me.
    I used a $1k Strat and a LP. Cleans were dead sounding; no warmth at all; did the push/pull for additional boost ... there was a volume boost, but little to no crunch. I brought some of my pedals and gave them a run too. Generally not impressed. There was no meat at all. I now understand why Steve from Marshall saturates his demos with delay (and it sounds like a bit of overdrive too). The tone was a bit dead and sterile to me; no depth.
    I then plugged into the Vox AC10; loads of controllable tone ... all for $450!
    I’m not buying the Origin.

      The latest news is people are saying you can't treat this as a master volume Marshall but rather a non master volume to get the best tones. I thought a main point was plexi style tone in a small wattage lower volume amp? This is just another 'almost there' marshall that can't get it quite right. I will play one sometime but ichavent heard anything remotely impressive other than the nice midrange.

      Shane - I wrote about my GC test drive before I had a chance to watch your review of the 5W. I enjoyed your review and your chops, but the Origin made your licks sound choked up in some parts and thin/dead in other parts ... the double-stops lacked depth and sustain.
      You at least got the new DSL ... unfortunately, I waited to give this a test-drive (I actually put a down payment on it to keep it off the showroom floor and in the box waiting for me). Thankfully, I DID NOT pre-order one based on the NAMM videos. My guess is that there will be a fair amount of these returned and/or sold on Reverb.com in the coming months for a discount to recently paid retail prices.
      I’m curious to see your 20W review ... you’ve read about my experience. A Les Paul, OCD, and Dunlop Bonamassa Wah weren’t enough to lift it up. I tried various settings and volumes (much to the salesperson’s chagrin!).
      What would you recommend for a tube amp? What should I be trying out? I don’t need more than 20W ... 10-12” speaker (depending on size of the cabinet; I’m fine with “10) ... nice, solid, creamy warm tones ... willingness to spend up to $650 USD (which is what the Origin 20 costs in the US) ... and I like pedals, so it must be pedal friendly. My tastes range from Blues to Hendrix to Classic Rock.
      Thanks Shane.
      Keep up the awesome content!

    The only thing stopping me picking up one of these is the speaker choices. I understand they are built to a price point. I saw a review of this line of amps on a different channel and for the combos, only the 50 sounded good, actually great, probably because it has a 12 inch speaker. The 20 combo sounded thin due to the smaller 10 inch speaker. The 5 sounded horrible because of its 8 inch speaker.

    I’ve always found it difficult to get a sound I liked from an amp with an 8” speaker. Would have been good to plug this Marshall into another cab with a 10” or 12” speaker to see what the difference was. I’ve tried the Origin 20 and I found a few great rock tones and a few nice cleans but definitely needs a reverb pedal in the fx loop for my taste. If you already have a reverb pedal the Origin series seems like good value. It starts getting a bit pricey if you have to buy a reverb pedal as well.

    I just got this amp off Amazon today and man, I'm glad I did because it's definitely going back! Terrible tone, both clean and "boosted". And I'm a massive Marshall fan. Nearly all of my amps are Marshalls so I thought this would be amazing: a Marshall tube practice amp? Hell ya! Well I am thoroughly disappointed for the first time ever in a Marshall. Not sure if maybe mine is broken (it's built in Vietnam after all) but it sounds shockingly bad. I'll be sticking with my Vox modeler for my practice amp, sadly. As much as I'd love to support Marshall, I can't justify $400cdn for something that sounds this bad!

    • @Escapism7133
      @Escapism7133 6 лет назад +6

      Completely agree. Not sure what Marshall was thinking with these little speakers. Perhaps digital modeling amps (for what they are) can get away with smaller speakers but with a simple single channel tube amp, you definitely need a larger speaker to move some air. I guess the Fender Princeton has a 10" speaker but it's kinda it's own vibe. You can't try and squeeze a plexi into an 8" speaker.

    • @colinmcnab6145
      @colinmcnab6145 6 лет назад +2

      patrick.cs this is not supposed to be a Plexi just a combo that gives a 60s/70s Marshall tone vibe.

    • @Escapism7133
      @Escapism7133 6 лет назад +1

      Colin Mcnab well obviously it's not actual Plexi. But Marshall's marketing team is definitely selling it as a Plexi style Marshall. The "tilt" function is supposed to replicate the various input combinations on the old Plexi's. Single channel vintage voiced Marshall. Vintage styling. Marketing mumbo-jumbo or not this thing sounds better through a larger speaker(s).

    The tubes are new so will need at least 20hrs or so on them before we really know what this amp sounds like. But if first impressions mean anything I'd be grabbing the 20w version and taking advantage of the attenuation options. Someone might make a good sounding combo with an 8" speaker but I certainly haven't heard it. If only they used a 10" speaker.

    For me the do not use it the way it should be used.. Just like the class 5, with a humbucker at quarter volume, is just sounding really well. They don't meant to be cranked all the way up and even less with drive pedals in front! You sure get boomy muddy sound... . In 5w combo it's ok for home, but not that much volume. The speaker is way to little. And brand new, it's sounding even less good.
