Hi paul, dmax owner here. Sometimes you don’t really need to rely on all those off road aids, but if you master and get familiar with your own vehicle and driver experience as well, off roading will be that easy.
Nice review as always. Next Ranger review, could you add some load to it? I know most rangers loaded will have a suspension upgrade but in stock its supposed to carry a few hundred kg payload. Would be curious to see how it goes offroad with a bit of payload.
Paul i have one request when your ford ranger comes plz make video of it plz ....you are doing great work you explain all things about cars in sach a good way that every one understands. Without using complicated jorgon terminologies used by others .love you take care good bless you...
Good explaining there Paul.Because, no two drivers are the same and would do things differently. Just wondering if there is a tire that's good for both on and off-road. Most are pretty good these days, But it seems there is a gap to be filled, between the best of both worlds.
Hi Poul I have just bought a Ford ranger sport. My question is. Do I need a off the market transmission cooler or has Ford done some changes on the new 2024 models. I'll be towing a 3 ton caravan. Thanks Bob.
You should mention the 4A Mode, its a big thing, you can press it at any speed, it locks like a Haldex clutch if you need it. I tested it in my ranger, fells the same like 4h when pushing the pedal.. but without tensioning the drive train in curves or on the street
New to all this. On the road I always drive in 4a. My daughter like to mess around with the settings and I find out by feeling the tension on the drive train. My question, is 2h and 4h a no go on the road?
@r3nlot you can allways drive in 2H, its the most economical driving. When its wet, icy or slippery you should go to 4A. And 4H and 4L is only for offroad driving
As always, excellent review. I wonder if you need to add a new category. “Availability” …. Timeframes on the ranger (eg. Raptor) seem to be blowing out to 18months - 2yrs. The review will be outta date by the time they arrive…. Of course all vehicles are slow .. but this seems a little excessive for a ‘launch.’ I ponder how the Amarok is going to go!
Your four wheel drive knowledge is coming along nicely, although you are still missing some key points in your reveals. ie, with low-range selected and manual operation of the gears, what is the highest gear the software will allow you to start off in from a stand still? There are situations like mud, where it is desirable to get fast wheel speed to clear the tyres, and this is achieved by starting in a gear higher than low first. eg, low third? Another area of importance for off-road driving is the need to reverse back down a steep hill that you have just failed to climb. Does the car "run away" in reverse gear? What is the gearing like for reverse? Also, at what revolutions does the torque convertor lock-up ?
Hey Paul thanks for the great content, from South Africa with love. Please do a 4x4/performance comparison between Ford Wildtrack V6 & Wildtrack 2.0 Bi Turbo
2:20 - pet hate of mine but 4H does not split torque 50/50, common misunderstanding. 4H (locked central diff) just locks the front and rear axles to the same speed. Torque is "split" by where you have the most grip. In other words if you have the front tires on tarmac and the rear on mud almost all the torque will be transferred through the front axle. Wheel speed is still the same though - don't confuse torque for wheel speed. The only device that splits torque 50/50 is an open diff.
2wd diff lock is a step back in the right direction! I didnt catch if 2wd low range possible? In cars of old it was really handy reversing a trailer up hill or in a tight spot in 2wd low range, where grip isnt an issue (and a major failling of current gen hilux etc). In 2wd low range you still have full steering range and exceptional control of the momentum when reversing caravans/boats etc in tight spaces. It may not get used often, but it was bloody handy when I needed it. Just annoyed it's not possible now... this just another reason i wish i still had my old 1994 hilux... just move a gear lever and it happened!
Hi Paul Does Ranger XL have traffic sign recognition, i'm trying to settle a bet? Can you please list all XL features, the Ford website is hopeless. Thanks, love the channel.
Hey Paul, it looks like the Triton GSR in your recent video handles the off road better? The TC seemed to handle things easier and didn’t need the rear diff lock as much? Would love your thoughts.
Hi Paul, just seen a report on Current Affair about some customer issues with the new Ranger. Can you provide some feedback on any issues you may have heard of? I’ve just put a deposit down for one but very concerned after seeing this review tonight on Current Affair. Regs Grant
The traction system on 4H doesn't seem to pull it out when front wheel had good traction to do it. Overall looks good but not sure about it's 4wd capability in terms of improvement.
Traction control wasn’t working at all in 4wd on the mogul which is no good. Only got going once diff lock was engaged. Yet your Wildtrack video did it with ease WTH.
Just replaced my 2022 with a 2024 Wildtrack. One thing I HATE. No sports mode on the auto box. I used it every day on the old model. Great on tight twisty roads. Also when towing. Yes the new model has a manual mode but no flappy paddles just tiny buttons on the stick. Almost unusable.
Seems like the 22 Triton you recently reviewed went through the moguls with more ease than the new ranger... Is that because it has a better traction control or because it's a lighter vehicle?
Great reviews, the mitsubishi trident seem to better on that course when you tested it to say its cheaper and am older platform ! Do like the new ranger though
So much technology...how long will it last? If the battery dies I would think you would be screwed when remote. I like the roominess for passengers and I would think the V6 diesel would have a long service life...
Rated recovery points great - what’s the rating? It’s no use having them without knowing how much they can handle. (500kg rating for example would be useless). Also, the accessory snorkel will only be useful if it’s 100% watertight otherwise it’s pointless. Plus you need to make sure everything else that might get submerged is also water proofed such as the alternator, electronics and door seals etc. You should not have needed a rear diff lock to get through the moguls in 4WD. That’s very unimpressive.
If already stuck, put it in 4L and lock the rear diff and crawl your way out slow and steady. If necessary or properly stuck, lower your tyre pressures well below 20psi. Beyond that, use basic recovery gear to get yourself out such as a shovel and recovery tracks.
Hi Paul can you put head to head D,max X Terrain v Ford Ranger wildtrack V6 . .... I was going to buy the d,Max but now I like the ranger. I will be towing a 2.8 ton caravan for 10 months. Thanks again.😃👍
This could have been an opportunity to explain the drive modes, what they activate, and what each one’s purpose is. Instead you defeated each mode by selecting a manual override. You went to “mud mode”, which is designed to allow fast wheel spin to clear the tires of mud, but you defeated it by manually selecting 4L- low range. That made no sense. Lost opportunity here. Each specific drive mode is a pre programmed combination of 4H or 4L and/or Rear diff-lock and gear selection. Explain and demonstrate what those combination are, without overriding them manually !
I swear traction control is just an information gathering system. Mainly because it doesnt work, sooo many customers get stuck on flat ground and my first solution is turn off traction control or pull abs fuse and they ALL drive out on their own. Its so useless it must be doing something else completely.
Great detailed review of the drive system Paul as always, but please, take a 4x4 into real world off-road terrain! Not just a man made aesthetically pleasing off-road course that appeals to the suits in utes market!
I find all the tech stuff is too much and all it really does it put the price up. Nothing wrong with engaging 4 wheel drive with a lever and learn how to drive in mud, snow sand etc
Sorry Ford, failed for me in look department, trying to downscale the front end from the larger trucks available in the US has just not worked in my view - looks to much like the font end is wider than the rest of it. Old model just looks beter IMO. Not that any of these 'mid size toys' look any good to me. All these mid size things look ok for the most part but never great and just look like they are going to tip over if you even look at corner (ie too tall and narrow) and don't get me started on thier inabiliy to even get out of the own way in traffic. I know they have thier purpose, this is just my view and Ford wont be selling me one anytime soon, but none of the other manufacutes be will either.
Please don't use slang. 80% of the global population aren't English capable. That "highway terrains" refer to tyres, isn't something everone will understand. Please consider viewers from non-Anglophone regions.
Ford really needs to come back to Australia and also scrap the electric cars they are not the future. Australia is one of lowest emissions countries now. Just install auto stop to all cars and there’s a lot of ways to stop emissions from your car without going electric
It actually spins me out the amount of high tech gadgetry is required to make modern 4wds go anywhere off road. ..if you were out in the bush, and used these gadgets to get there.. and then they stop working (as computerised things tend to do) You would have zero chance of getting home. " as they tend to do ". This isn't the 80's any more. Anything can and will break. If anything, cars with more gadgetry installed are actually more reliable due to said gadgetry.
Ha ha, then why would you watch the review? It's consistently the best or second best selling car in the country and Ford has given us plenty of opportunity to cover it.

Impressive to see how well it performed on the standard road tyres.
That’s what impressed me the most. The systems have some serious brain power.
Excellent review. Such a great looking Ute. It looks so powerful on the road. Love the colour too.
Thanks!
Nice review as always. Next Ranger review, could you add some load to it? I know most rangers loaded will have a suspension upgrade but in stock its supposed to carry a few hundred kg payload. Would be curious to see how it goes offroad with a bit of payload.

Nice review. A great ute that should set the bar for the others :)
Great review Paul. Pick up this exact model and colour Monday will be caked in mud as soon as it goes down my driveway 👍👍
Great truck, looks good on the road and makes the old ranger look dated… cheers for the review! 👍🏻
This ute market was started by Ford South Africa 🇿🇦 almost 50 years ago when they turned a Cortina into a ute.
looking forward to see the same test done with the raptor ( it has front diff lock as well doesn't it?)
Nicely filmed and edited Paul! Great review, the new Ranger looks good.
My dream car. While the resale value of Ranger is lower than Hilux, Hilux still lacks additional features.
Paul i have one request when your ford ranger comes plz make video of it plz ....you are doing great work you explain all things about cars in sach a good way that every one understands. Without using complicated jorgon terminologies used by others .love you take care good bless you...

Thanks Paul 👍
Sad that the majority don't understand what the buttons do and more so what they actually do!
That’s what 4A is for! 🤣
Hey Paul - are you doing a raptor review from the media event a couple of weeks ago?
Unfortunately not. We are just waiting for Ford to get a car to us, hopefully in the next week or two.
Looks like you had highway air pressure in the tyres as well? Great vid as always. Thanks Paul. Cheers, dd
Hello Paul 🖐🏻 Can u make video explain more about 4A? How does it work
I'm hearing from owner groups that they are already experiencing problems with tailshaft and transmissions.... Good luck with that
Hi Poul I have just bought a Ford ranger sport. My question is. Do I need a off the market transmission cooler or has Ford done some changes on the new 2024 models. I'll be towing a 3 ton caravan. Thanks Bob.

It scares me because when you drive and look in the rear view mirror that blue oval is all you can see. They love tailgating lmao
No need, all have their issues, some more than others.
