Clearly Stephen King got the idea for several key scenes in Pet Cemetery from the ending of this. In particular the killer toddler scenes from Kings novel are all here. Even the scalpel is mentioned. All King had to do was think of another slightly different and less recognizable plot point to make the child come after the adults and the parents to kill them which King very cleverly did. King himself stated after the death of Bradbury "Without Ray Bradbury there would be no Stephen King."
A good story, but I have a few questions. I can just about understand the baby’s resentment against its mother, for her failure to keep him safe in her womb, but why would he resent his father? That makes no sense. Would any doctor prescribe a pill that would put a patient to sleep for 24 hours? Seems highly unethical and unlikely to me. Who was supposed to be looking after the baby while the father was asleep for 24 hours? There’s a brief mention of “servants” but it’s not specified what their roles are. They are literally asleep on the job when the doctor shows up and finds the baby’s father dead. Assuming the servants play a part in caring for the baby, why didn’t the mother get them to help out when the baby was crying all night, so she could get some rest? Had the baby tried to kill the servants too? Was he a sort of infant serial killer, or was it just his parents he wanted dead? I know it’s a fantasy, but I still dislike plot holes.
I love this story and had had no idea Bradbury recorded a reading. Thank you for posting.

What in the world is more selfish than a baby?
That line hits you, although cats

Pretty good
I think Bradbury was a deep thinker.
