- We’ve been trained to stay neutral in sessions with clients. But is this always possible, or even desirable?
Well, Miguel Gallardo, PsyD had a case in which a client made racist comments.
So then the question becomes, how do you handle this while still maintaining the therapeutic alliance?
He’ll also share a little about liberation psychology (a key part of his intervention) and get into when self-disclosure can be a powerful tool in a session.
OMG, i needed this video SOOOO badly! Thank you! my "social justice warrior" self has been in internal conflict with my clinical social worker self, with multiple therapy clients over the last 2 months...staying "neutral" has felt so in-authentic, thank you for giving me new tools, (that I sadly could not get in Supervision)
Thank you! I am going to use your video as part of my clinical integration class for masters-level counselors. It's great
This is BRILLIANT commentary - highly actionable and easily adapted to myself as a layperson as I interact in social and professional situations. These words and phrases have helped me modify how I respond to racist comments.
Wonderful. I've been looking for something like this to present strategies for dealing with microaggressions in my multicultural counseling class.
Really helpful! Thank you 🙏🏻
This a brilliant perspective. Thank you for sharing!
I treated a former member of Hitler Youth. I have treated patients that are actively racist. I have treated patients that clearly disrespect women.
African American. Most of these people were never in Africa or born there. We are AMERICAN with this and that in our blood. Skin color is a stupid reason to hate.
