  • After having my first session on Throop on the River Stour in Dorset two weeks ago, I couldn't wait to get back and put all the things I'd done wrong right. With some slight tackle changes and some new knowledge see how I get on in this second video visit to this fantastic Chub Mecca.

      Gary Keighley - totally agree it keeps you fit and warm. I'm going to have to scale things down a little as I seem to take too much kit when float fishing. Cheers for watching.

    I'm the complete opposite, Dave. I really enjoy ledgering for chub, but always go back to the trusty old centre pin. Great video by the way and what an absolute clonker

    Nice little session there Dave and a nice Chub cant complain with that, around 4lb. My biggest fish yesterday was about 2 and half pound F1 (i think, might have been a proper mirror carp but looked different) so you done better than me, keep them coming.

    • @chasingshadows-ananglingob2295
      @chasingshadows-ananglingob2295  6 лет назад

      Thanks Buddy, yes you're right any fish is better than a blank in the colder months. Those F1's give a good account for their selves. Thanks for watching mate. Its much appreciated.

      Mark Carp - yes think I will stick with it as I've had the pin for over 20 years(birthday present from wife) and have only used it a couple of times. Cheers Mark.

      Ben Brown - Hi Ben, I don't want to make too many excusses however like you said it was a diffulcut day as there was a lot of anglers blanking. I've now just got to time the conditions right for a good day. Thanks for watching Ben 👍

    Luvly chub mate in not ideal conditions 🖒. Stick with the pin tho. Took me a while to get used to it but coupled with a 13 or 14ft rod its so much easier.as for casting it will come.you dont need to master the 'wallis caste' a loop cast is more than sufficient on smaller rivers with the longer rod & you also get much better line control. Maybe lose the line guard also?? Can make a difference.
    Very enjoyable vid as usual mate.look forward to the next one

      Dave Walker - Hi Dave, glad your are enjoying my fishing video experiences. Thanks for the advice, I will stick with the pin and I'll see how it goes without the line gaurd. The pin goes have it's advantages when it comes to trotting and I think I should keep at it. Watch this space to see how I get on. Happy New year to you and your family and here's to 2018>

    Agree with the previous, you dont seem to be doing too badly to me, however if you don't like leaving at 'prime' time due to visibility problems take a ledger rod with you and ledger the same line, I have pinned for grayling and changed to ledger at dusk after all I had been feeding for a few hours, picked up bonus chub and barbel.

    • @chasingshadows-ananglingob2295
      @chasingshadows-ananglingob2295  6 лет назад

      Thanks Rob, yes i'm not doing too bad any 5+ chub is very welcome in my books. I've tried to stay light and that's why i don't take the ledger rod with me really, but i think i'm missing out on some good opportunities, so i'm going to take it on my next visit to Throop. Cheers buddy..

    How you fish a chub in the summer on a feeder when there are small fish eating bread from a feeder? Thanks

  • @pasturepp3002
    @pasturepp3002 6 лет назад

    Hi Dave You should have fished 20ft to your right on the last swim, that's where all the big ones live under the raft, had fish up to 7.8 there this season. 👍

    Hi Dave
    Sorry I know this is an old video but was curious If you persevered with the pin or went back to the fixed spool?
    I’ve always found the pin is best fished directly off the end of a long rod in instances where you want to hold back hard.
    Nonetheless for most of us this is limited to smaller rivers. If you want more flexibility to fish the far bank then the fs is superior to us non pin experts (as well as non expects alike: great river float anglers such as Tim Norman, the late Terry Lampard (RIP), Terry Theobald, Mark Wintle and Dave Howes to name but a few all seem/ed to have a preference to the fs in most situations!)
    Great film by the way!
    All the best.

    I think you may have gone a bit heavy with the hooklink - I usually use 3lb max when fishing for chub at Throop, and sometimes go as low as 2.4lb. It can be surprising when fishing for chub just what a difference using lighter tackle can make, especially in the more popular stretches. Sometimes I have been fishing for some time wihout catching anything, then changed to a lighter hooklink and had a chub first cast. If you play the fish carefully you shouldn't lose it. When the river has some extra depth and pace in winter too it's worth catapulting the maggots well upstream of where you are fishing.

      Valeriun66 - thanks for the advice, yes I think your right about fishing light, however I’m struggling to get use to it as I usually fish 6lb main line for chub on the Kennet and Loddon. Thanks again and I’ll put your good advice into good use.

    • @ha5enk552
      @ha5enk552 5 лет назад

      All depends on chub size really, i wouldnt dare go lighter than 4lb but mainly because im fishing for a 7lber or even an 8. I usually fish 5lb and when there are snags i use 6.

      London Predator Angler - Hi Barrie if I'm honest I have float fished many many years ago (when I had hair😂) but it's not my strength really. But like most anglers a little knowledge can go a long way and I've had some great advice from people and quite a bit of luck. Wet nets and deadbaits...👍

    Your bulk shot need to be down by the swivel , use a reel that you're comfortable with mate !

    That’s my favourite river I will give you some tips I always manage 8+chub and sometimes a lucky barbel my best day was 22 chub and a 8lb barbel you are on the right path but need to tweak a few things

  • @rooster5645
    @rooster5645 6 лет назад +1

    Dave you did well to catch that chub I have fished throop since 1978 and had many big chub and barbel during the earlier years but throop has been in decline for years and in particular the last 6 years where the otters are rife and the barbel are disappearing fast and although there is still a good head of chub at the moment they will go over the next 2 or 3 years if nothing is done. Out of interest how many other anglers did you see on the day? hardly any I bet!

    • @chasingshadows-ananglingob2295

      Hi Mate it was quite busy if i'm honest the middle car park was full. I did see the big old otter, massive it was and quite brave i must admit. Talking to the local, its not as good as it was. Shame really..
