So ‘70s. Electric organ music jammin’ at 0:14. Alice wearing a variety of hats during the opening credits. Tommy wearing big goofy ‘70s style glasses. It was a fun decade.
Probably since it was from the pilot episode only. Alfred Lutter who was Tommy in the pilot was in the film it was based on - Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore - which was a drama. Only other one in the pilot who was in the movie was Vic Tayback (RIP) as Mel. Phillip Mc Kean (RIP) replaced Alfred as Tommy in the rest of the series.
Alfred Lutter played Tommy in the movie upon which this show was based, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, but he was dropped after the pilot episode, and was replaced by Philip McKeon. Evidently, Tommy was a bratty and undisciplined character in the movie, and the producers wanted a sweeter character for the show. Vic Tayback was also Mel in the movie. Interestingly, Diane Ladd, who played Flo in the movie, would replace the Flo character in the show under another name after Polly Holliday left. Diane only lasted one season in the show.
Correct - Diane's character in the series was named Belle Dupree, who was no where near as popular with the audience as Polly was - and I doubt she was popular with the rest of the cast either. Linda felt threatened by Polly's popularity so she pushed her out into her own series and possibly pushed Diane out too. She did get along with Celia Weston, though (Jolene Hunnicut). She also had no issues with Vic Tayback (Mel), Beth Howland (Vera) or Phillip Mc Kean (Tommy) - ironically all three of them are now deceased.
Alfred Lutter was Ogilvie in the first two Bad News Bears movies. There's an inside joke in the Alice pilot where the Tommy character says something like "now I'll never get to meet Tatum O'Neal".
Apparently, adding a policewoman to the Barney Miller cast was the original intention, but then Linda was offered her own show. There was another policewoman character who appeared in two or three episodes, but she did not last, and the show retained its all male line up.
@@nassauguy48 I've been watching Barney Miller a lot recently and I was getting the feeling they were prepping Linda to become a regular, or at least a semi-regular. They brought in at a least a couple other actresses - one I thought might have been worked out; I believe she was Puerto Rican and she had a very distinctive persona, but they only had her in a couple episodes. Another woman had been on the show a few times as other characters and she got maybe two episodes. I honestly think Linda Lavin set the bar so high, they were never going to find anyone as good as she was. Linda also had a great chemistry with the entire cast that showed on the screen.
What a shame .....joxes on me 2 believe TV characters are anything like that in real life.....linda lavin, I adored Alice Hyatt....but that LL was nasty and unpleasant 2 both Beth Howland and Polly Holiday(VERA and FLO)....because they may have had excelent talent?.....DIVA!.... CATTY!.....ok, I was naive.....but I'll never watch that show with the same enthusiasm ....go ahead tell me SANTA CLAUS doesn't exist ....just like Alice Hyatt.
Why did she walk in a total circle after exiting the store with the ice cream? That part made zero sense to me LOL, but I love this song and opening otherwise.
Makes me think I make this different for a movie "Melanie's Diner" as an alternative title with the cast I choose. Mandy Moore as Alice "Alicia" Hyatt Emma Stone as Tamara Hyatt Gary Cole as Thomas Hyatt (Father) Shelly Long as Alice Ward-Hyatt (Mother) Rhea Pearlman as Melanie Sharples Lucy DeVito as Maxine Sharples (Melanie's Daughter) Blake Lively as Florence Castleberry Grace Fulton-Currey as Vera Louise Gorman Karen Gillan as Jolene Hunnicutt

Werner Huehn The official reason was that they felt he was too old. But let’s face it: the relationship between Alice and Tommy in the movie was an odd one, and a little too offbeat for a mainstream sitcom.
@@lakebay972 he turned down a network series that might run years for a bit part in an ensemble cast where he had about 5 minutes of screentime? I mean, it's possible, but he should have fired his agent.
I had hoped that I'd see this intro tho the pilot at the very least. I hadn't seen it in aeons!! I'm glad I found it here on RUclips!! BTW, Alfred Lutter was better at playing "Tommy Hyatt" than Phil McKeon. Phil was such a doofus!! ;) LOL!! :) :)
I loved Alice but that intro was horrible. Doesn't tell the viewer anything about the show or encapsulates any essence of what the show is about which is what the opening teaser is supposed to do. Too bad Lutter was replaced as they thought he was too old.
Really miss the simplicity of life back then -floor model tv's, riding bikes, playing board games, eating white bread. Life was less complicated.
What's not simple now?
I grew up in the 70s and you can do all those things now.
The racism, the hatred of gays and Jews, women being beaten, pay discrepancies, oh yea miss this wonderful times smh
So true
One of the best sitcoms from the 70s and certainly one of the best openings. Linda Lavin sung it herself.
Um, no. It was crap.
Do you have the lyrics to this song?

This intro brings back plenty of fond memories of when I was much younger and I enjoyed watching it very much.

bobby moore never aired on tv

I truely did enjoy watching this every single episode of "Alice" with Linda Lavin and Vic Tayback very much.
Happy New Years to all and may this year be the very best one for all. ©®

Never saw this pilot. Thanks for the post.

Can't get more inside than THAT! :)
I liked Linda when she did Barney Miller playing Det. Wentworth. I missed her on the show but she made a great choice having her own in Alice.

Alice was the best tv show of all time
Beautiful Linda lovin she is the she was the heart of 1976 so greatfull for her beautiful heart episode Alice
Awesome pilot!! Love it!!
The best version, imo.
Vera is my favorite
Alfred Lutter was just so cute
He was Ogilvie in the bad news Bears
Glad they changed this and Tommy-for the better

Should have kept that one. She looks real hot at the very end
with the schmutz on her face?

She let the door go and it slammed in the Kids' face so she circled back to open the door for him and that's how she got a snauz full of ice-cream.
Awkwardness sells i guess.

Doug McKean was Tommy after the second episode. RIP
Philip McKeon

I wonder why they replaced Alfred? Too dorky looking? I know he was in the movie, but movies play to different audiences than TV shows.
Werner Huehn The official reason was that they felt he was too old. But let’s face it: the relationship between Alice and Tommy in the movie was an odd one, and a little too offbeat for a mainstream sitcom.
dorky? yes, & the fact that he would not grow into an attractive young man. they foresaw his teen looks would remain dorky. truth.
Alfred was going to do the show; but he turned it down to do "The Bad News Bears"

Ogilvie was the original “Tommy!”
Buon incasso al bar per quest'estate Nicoula
I can't find the pilot episode. Thought for sure it would be on RUclips.

Do you have the episode?
Why was Alfred Lutter only in the movie and pilot?
They tend to change up the casting after the pilot.
Luca della Georgia nel 2017 nella sua 147 mi disse Nicoula che tu hai la gelateria
Is the entire original pilot available?
*Fun Fact*
The main actor Linda Lavin sang the theme song to Alice
A reoccuring plotline was that her dream job was to be a singer, and she sang multiple times on the show.
I preferred the other Tommy than Alfred Lutter
Guess they decided to go with less nerd. Alfred did have the starting role but was replaced. I did not care for either Tommy. Useless character.
So did CBS, that’s why he wasn’t on season 1, when it started. This kid not tv material
That’s not Tommy😳
Berry Harbour Nope. His name is Alfred Lutter
He IS Tommy. He's just not Philip.

he was Tommy before Tommy
@testodude wow never knew there was another 😳 tommy
Still can't believe this was based on a movie. It looked like a serious movie too.
