What power art thou Who from below Hast made me rise Unwillingly and slow From beds of everlasting snow See'st thou not how stiff And wondrous old Far unfit to bear the bitter cold I can scarcely move Or draw my breath I can scarcely move Or draw my breath Let me, let me, Let me freeze again Let me, let me Freeze again to death Let me, let me, let me Freeze again to death...
What power art thou? Who from below Hast made me rise? Unwillingly and slow From beds of everlasting snow! See'st thou not how stiff And wondrous old? Far unfit to bear the bitter cold... I can scarcely move Or draw my breath I can scarcely move Or draw my breath

@Malcolm Raphael I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Yes, totally agree with you about his voice. When he opened his mouth and that voice came out I was gobsmacked! As for the tempo, matter of taste I suppose. Traditionally this has been played much slower but I actually like this tempo.
@@martuuk8964 Yes, thanks for that info. I said "traditionally" (not "historically") referring to the performance traditions as they have built up since modern orchestras developed. It's interesting to hear that this piece would have been performed at that tempo back in the English pre-baroque era. It's also a little surprising, since in general, tempos tend to pick up over time. Is the evidence we have about performance practices of the period concrete? (e.g. are we in a position to know precise tempi since, for example, metronomes were not invented until a few centuries later) Just curious...
Ridiamoci sopra e mettiamoci in fila .
Prefer Andreas Scholl , but can see it is wonderfully true to the spirit of the times when it was written ; audiences then went to the theatre to have a good time and be entertained not have their minds improved.....
Insupportable cet Arthur grelottant piteusement...
Absolute, awful, ridiculous crap! And the song is far too fast. (Though it has to be said that all the voices are excellent!) Now go and listen to a company that knows how to produce Purcell.
I love it. It might be too fast for a traditional rendition but with penguins and nurses, this is everything but traditional. Great. Absolutely great.

Excellent interprétation
! Thé original showing was a reportedly lot of fun too with machinery for trapeze etc. nakedness and laughter.
WOW! The best presentation of the Cold Song/Cold Genius since Klaus Nomi died. OK, best adaption since Nanette Scriba's homage to Klaus Nomi.

Wunderbar....
Wonderful voice and excellent perfomance
Hahahaha what fun they had! Great interpretation!
Wonderful ;-) Bravo, João Fernandes! Thank You
Avant garde even today. Amazing.
Agree. Whenever I listen to Purcell I have to remind myself that he was a Baroque composer.
I lovvveveeeee this!!!!! genius!!!!! amazing voice!!!
Fantastic! I'm a huge fan of this scene, and this half-comic interpretation is indeed fabulous :D
Agree - I think it's terrific.

Thanks so much, you really help me out :D

Delightful :) Best ever interpretation of this Aria. Thank you for this Herve Niquet, Joao Fernandes, and everyone else.
Glad it was sung by the voice that it was written for....a basso.
Why is it a favorite of countertenors?
He has a wonderful voice (and tone), but the tempo is way too fast for me ! What a pity !

Agree!
I enjoyed this very much, for me it does not detract from the more classical interpretations.
one of the best versions I've listened to / seen
GREAT!!!!
Ridiamoci sopra e mettiamoci in fila .
vraiment bravo. Très réussi !
Oh, no!!! Great! So much Purcell!
It´s probably not first time in history, Purcells opera has been subjected to humour/sillness :-)
This is slapstick. And it's glorious!
Yes, I love it. Fullblown glorious over the top. And very clever
Absolut 'great' ... !!!!
great pure song
very hilarious:) great singers!!!
No. Not the cold Song I've been acquainted with by countertenors! They are maybe very skilled, but definitely not my cup of tea!
When most fully genuine we are the most ridiculous. Tel est l'être humain.
Right the bit where Santa shows up and crashes his slay and then runs past the stage crying for his slay was really funny and random
Great interpretation!!!
superb!
You get no brownie points if you're French... the odds are totally against us. Whatever we say, whatever we do, The Five Eyes are watching us
Fantastico! jajaja
great
What a scream. Wat a bossy and scary cupid. Too fast , but beautifully produced and hilaious. :-)
Superbe!
genial!
so coooooool love it jve
I doubt Purcell considered this opera as comedy
It makes a good comedy though.
Zero fucks given
What fun ..
Prefer Andreas Scholl , but can see it is wonderfully true to the spirit of the times when it was written ; audiences then went to the theatre to have a good time and be entertained not have their minds improved.....

Is there a dvd of this version? If yes where could I buy it?

Thank you
@@raganellabianca1 oh good! C'est magnifique!

Cupid's English is very vague.
👏👏👏👏
Best version except for the speed
Too fast for my taste, though..
Hahahahahaha!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Oui. Vous pouvez le trouver sur Amazon. (cette dvd par Glossa)

annoying they ditched the Dryden libretto.
Ze manze pas les nems (tchip)🤨☝️🤫
Triste
It all looks and sounds as if this performance is intended for children in nursery schools 😬
Why make fun of a classic . ?
😂😂😂
Quel contre-sens !
Insupportable cet Arthur grelottant piteusement...
French missunderstandig uf serious music, Purcell and good music. shame!!
Absolute, awful, ridiculous crap! And the song is far too fast. (Though it has to be said that all the voices are excellent!) Now go and listen to a company that knows how to produce Purcell.
Love to listen to this song, as long as it's sung with a real male voice
Wtf is that
Annoying.
It is not a humour. It 's an insult. Disgusting.
