  • This will help you save money on all the expensive micro crystalline wax. this method was taught to me by the world traveler RUclips channel. Its the best way...its the only way I know to recycle the wax so if you have other ideas let me know!

does steaming the plaster affects it in a way? like creating micro cracks or i dont know reducing the resolution of details, like smoothing the edges too much

I really, *really* want to do some casting... busy with school and work at the moment, but I really enjoy living vicariously through your videos. Thanks!

Great video thanks! The filtering is a great addition and I’ll use that in my process. Couple thoughts, since you mentioned it at the end of your video. My understanding is that vaporized microcrystalline wax is really bad to breath, mad hatter type brain damage. Consider using a wall paper steamer to stream out most of the wax onto a catch pan, that way the wax doesn’t vaporize out of the boiling water during the steaming process. To remelt, I like using a simple electric deep fryer, the wax can’t drip on the elements and the temperature can be controlled under the boiling point. In fact, I often add several cups of water to the pot before remelting the wax, if the water doesn’t boil during the remelt, then the puck of wax has minimal water/wax foam. Downside, if I want to incorporate the filtering process, the wax will need to remelted a second time sans water. Thanks again for the video!

Searched for microcrystaline wax in Europe without success. Using beeswax and parafine mixture with additives, and beeswax is not cheap either. Thanks for a water steaming tip.

I don't have any experience with microcrystalline wax other than using it to soak wooden boxes..but Bees wax I have.
When I wash my beeswax in basically the same way you do there is something that dissolves into the water , now in my case its propolis which is resinous and makes the wax more pliable and slightly sticky which is what I need when making foundation for my bees so I collect a lot of propolis specifically to put back into my wax for this purpose. If there is no propolis the wax is very brittle and almost impossible to use.
It occured to me that there is likely something similar in the microcrystalline wax that does the same thing. It might be beeswax for all I know but I imagine with a bit of research it could found and mixed with your moulding wax to make it softer.
    Hope that helps
great misuse of pantyhose btw lol

Get a vacuum funnel and filter papers and you'll keep it much cleaner much easier.

Is a vacuum funnel an ordinary funnel or something special? I would think wax would be too viscous to go through filter paper?

Steaming is good way to dewax though maybe not the best - not sure?? Alternatively, I've seen pictures of special gas fired "bottomless floor" burn out contraptions, with mold held up by wire only. Either way removed wax will have impurites to deal with. Looks like your cleaning method gives very good results.

I do have a flash burn out kiln with a hole in the bottom of it to collect the wax. But investment can’t be heated up that fast so for slow heating, steaming is my best option. The flash burn out like is for the ceramic shell but I don’t use that a lot.

"If you're watching this I'm sure you know how to lost wax cast" ..... nope! What is microcrystalline wax vs beeswax or carnauba wax? The purchase you showed didn't even say microcrystalline.. do you have a getting started playlist or some other resource?

Thanks for the insight! I just ordered a pack of Freeman Wax Wires that I saw you use in your videos. What do you use for wax sprues? Or more specifically, Is there a brand or a particular diameter that you recommend?
    Thanks!

I get my sprues from Rio grande jewelry supply. The size is based on the size piece you are casting. I get the biggest they have and one size smaller I believe. I hand remember now the size.
