I belong to a culture where women are given no freedom. And I wanted to break free. I didn’t know where I’d go but this freedom song kept me going. I used to sing it to my new born baby niece as she was hated for being born as a girl. I was a failed attempt at having a son too and got hated for not being a son my whole life. Surprisingly, I went to Italy, had my freedom and one night I was walking home with an Italian friend singing this in the streets of Italy, thinking about my journey. Then they got married my father got in the army but he had an accident with a helicopter. Then they got me and my brother and taught us the song.

It’s the opposite actually, the north before Mussolini supported Antonio Gramsci, a socialist that was against both fascism and soviet comunism (he was killed by the regime in the end). The south had always been more close minded, that’s why the biggest partisan battle groups were in the north, the central part of italy was the more fascist of all.
