OMG I'm dying. His reaction to the Diana Ross comparison is priceless. He sounded a little aggravated but he handled it well. I know he was thinking "WTF you comparing me to a girl for?" Michael and the bridge book...I can't!
Sarah lol it’s cuz he voice was already goin through puberty here, then like by 1975 his voice is already the high pitched one, that’s when his puberty ended lol.
OMG! How do I miss this man. Thanks to RUclips I can always go back to days like this. Their voices, his voices. I hope Michael left this world KNOWING he was loved truly and dearly!
3:10 "I sound like her?" - hahahaha! Mikey sounds so sweet - as usual...why would people criticize him as his voice changed? Frustrates the FUCK outta me - really - uhhhhhh - he was always a beautiful soul!
I love the way they laugh when the interviewer tells Mike he sounds like Diana Ross! They KNOW Mike had a crush on Ms. Diana! Mike is so funny the book was about a bridge. I guess summer vacation had already taken a hold of him!!! They seem so at ease.
If I'm not mistaken this is July 1973, they all correctly said their ages except Michael and Randy. Michael said 13 when he's actually 14 about to be 15, and Randy said 10 when he's actually 11 about to be 12. It really bothers me that Motown made them lie.
I know Michael voice changed naturally, but his whole energy has changed by now. he doesn't have that same energy he had in the brotherly love interview or any of the other interviews he did as a kid when he would take charge and then laugh because he wasn't supposed to take the Mic or something.
Thank you for this comment. I really feel like something in Michael changed around 1972/1973, like you said his whole “energy” from when he was a child had changed and he seemed like he regressed. I always point to the 1972 American Bandstand interview as the first sign I noticed something “different” with Michael, becoming more withdrawn, passive, softer, shy, borderline melancholy, kind of “disconnected”. As a young boy he was very bold, unabashed, and even “mature”. Idk but something stunted him early, I think it was a culmination of things in his life, from the introduction to sex early in life, to the extreme isolation, to the long hours of work in the studio with little playtime, to the verbal and physical abuse from his father, to adolescence, to strong religious convictions, to being told how to lie, to being restricted from dating and even platonic friendships, etc...I think it really began taking its toll early and no one ever really stopped to check on him or get him help and it just never got better over time. I hate to play keyboard psychologist, but I am a long time fan, and this is something that has always bothered me. How extreme his personality change was apparent as early as this interview and I always want to know what on Earth was happening in his life at this time
JazmineJermany I disagree. Brotherly fun stuff was just a conversation between the brothers and Mike was more comfortable around his brothers so he could laugh and express himself around them. This interview is a public thing so he isn't really that excited and expressive.
@- Celestia - I mean not really. 11/12 is still in the age range of 10-22. That's why I think he said it that way, so that it wouldn't look like lying.
Michael lied about his age here. He would have been 14 at this time and turning 15 the following month. Marlon did not lie. He correctly identified himself as 16. Interesting.
LyfeMuz PR. Motown made Michael tell him that he was 9 when he was really 11. So, he would be turning 14 if he was really 13. But, yeah, he was really 14 going on 15. It was a Motown PR scheme ☺️ #themoreyouknow
I understand Motown‘s reasoning, but I hate that they were taught to lie and saw some of the things that the younger boys saw when they were starting out… performing in bars and strip clubs. I think that’s one problem that Michael had been exposed to those things and then also seeing his father cheat And their father exposing them to the filthy Side of show business. It is a miracle to see the amount of talent and good looks in one family !
the bars and strip clubs were BEFORE Motown that was with his dad.. they had to try to get exposed they didnt care where it was trying to get their name out there,..lieing about their age is PENNIES compared to what they had to do -- it wasn't a big deal they needed to sell records!
I don't think he liked it when the interviewer said he sounded like Diana Ross b/c he's saying he sounds like a girl that's why he was like "I sound like her?" anyway I thought it was funny when he talked about school "she read a book to us its about a bridge" lmao.
Yeah that was funny, but at the same time during their early motown years Michael try to sing certain ways like Diana, he used some of her vocal tricks like the "ooh" and others, he studied her, marvin and others but she was his biggest singing style while James was his dancing style and Jackie Wilson as well.
but i mean he did kind of sound like a professional woman singer when he was a kid. when i heard some of his songs i thought he had the voice of a high pitched female singer.
When the DJ asked "what would you be if you weren't music stars"? Michael says "star track". Did he mean "track star" or he wanted to be on "star trek" lol. I really have no clue, it's pretty funny
Michael is only a 1 year younger than Marlon, so he's really like 15 plus he was born in 1958 and that was 1973... what the heck is going on how is he 13? But oh well. hahaha I love the part 6:05-6:06 where Michael says "nuh un.. naw"
this is hilarious! i love how they laughed for at the marriage question, when they knew DAMN WELL Jermaine was about to get married later that year lllooolllll!! These interviews are priceless!!!
He had his own style and sound he did want to sound like a women He was a real boy and and man not gay at all .all man or should I say boy because he didn’t want to grow up lol they were close growing up .
his voice was still much higher when he was a kid tho. sounding like a woman is not all about pitch(also its about how loud and raspy you sing). i thought he sounded more like a woman when he was grown up than when he was a kid where i could tell he was a little boy.
now mike caught in a lie him and marlon are a year apart he was 15 . ohh i wud have hated saying i was younger than i really was , but i wud have never lied for anyone

jaymillymills because he was actually older than 11 he was 14 turning 15
Because his voice changed.

he faked his voice. he definitely had a deeper voice because his singing scale dropped a lot from when he was a kid.
