I once heard that the League office tries to call Angel Hernandez about his performance, but he keeps missing the calls.
You sir, win the internet with this comment

Nice
Acuna doubled his stolen base total in 1 year. Dude leads the league in caught stealing 2 year in a row. Base stealing should of been a bigger part but a lot of players didn’t take advantage of it
I've said it before on another Hernandez video:
If my customers told me I was bad at my profession, if my co-workers told me I was bad at my profession, if my employers told me I was bad at my profession, and the hard evidence proved that I was, beyond a shadow of a doubt, BAD at my profession....then self-respect absolutely dictates that I find another profession.
Angel's just a ho, I guess.
Let's be honest though. You wouldn't want to leave of your own choice if you're getting paid. So unless Angel gets fired and he probably won't, MLB and the fans will be seeing the guy until he retires....
Angel has no self respect, or he would at least try to get some calls right. He just cares about getting paid.
He's a ho. He does it for the money and recognition. He also realizes that not many people know the names of umpires who are effective. His incompetence makes him famous, but his God complex allows him to revel in it.
He is the living embodiment of the Peter Principle.
Dude makes over $400K/year. You’d really walk away from that?
Yeah. Didn’t think so.
Angel shouldn’t be an umpire anymore! He’s such a disgrace to the sport!
Agreed One of The Worst Umps Ever!
Nice to be able to claim racism whenever your job performance is called into question
They don’t care ,baseballs broken barely a sport anymore
Exactly, it has nothing to do with his race, it has to do with his lack of competence
It is a joke he still has a job, he should have been fired years ago.
“I’m gonna be fined for being right again.” -Harper gem.
The kid is giving us the finger
MLB Umpires have ZERO accountability. It is absolutely bananas.
Isn't there a team called the Bananas he can call games for?
That's what unions do.
If they weren't unionized, you would have a higher standard of officiating. MLB hitters lose their roster spot and their job if they don't know the strike zone. Do umpires have that same incentive? Or is there an organization that specifically exists to insulate them from poor work performance? Hire and train non union umps, increase their pay (to get more applicants), and make it easier to get fired (increasing opportunities for new umps). Also require them to do post game interviews like managers are made to do. It's all about fixing the incentives. What reason do umps have to train and perform at the same level as top players if their union will shield them from consequences of their poor officiating?
@@RAZGR1Z baseball players have a very strong union and they get canned for performance.
@@YourBeastRoy that team is in the tropics, I believe. Likely Puerto Rico or somewhere south of there.😆
I was in mid-left field last night, and even I could see from out there that he didn’t swing all the way through. Every day Angel Hernandez continues to be an umpire for the league is an injustice to the sport.
You’re a Phillies fan, you were probably passed out drunk in the bathroom.
Classy comment buddy! Kind of ironic actually with you calling anyone else out for acting classless. Not sure how they get those seats packed full of excited fans when they should be passed out in a bathroom. Stay bitter. Stay stupid.@@805fillmore
Angel has complained that he isn't a crew chief because of racial issues. Angel is ignoring the fact that he is a terrible umpire.
Not only complained but SUED MLB twice. MLB’s response in the first lawsuit was that he was bad at his job lol
Now it’s time to use the Trans card. Come on Angel
MLB could easily find another umpire of similar race who is far more competent.
MLB literally statement from lawsuit said from past history, they didn't trust him enough for a serious game. Saying he fckn sucks
@brucesmith9144 They can, but it doesn't help whenever Angel STILL has said job
In a game of millimeters, I couldn’t imagine thinking 4 inches doesn’t matter.
That's what she said!
It’s the base, NOT the strike zone
Lol I agree. I've seen 100s of steal plays that were decided by 2 inches or less. That dude doesn't watch as much as others.
It’s that AND the fact it encourages players to fun much more frequently. To say it had nothing to do with Acuna setting the mark is silly.,
Just want to take a moment among all the (justified) Angel Hernandez bashing to say, great work by Bryce Harper. Stellar move, having security hunt that down so he could sign the helmet. We shouldn't forget how bad Angel Hernandez is at being an umpire, but love to Bryce Harper.
Love him. We're so lucky to have him here in Philly. A few weeks ago at fan photo day, a 7 year old boy got separated from his family. He was crying and upset. Bryce saw him, took his hand and walked him back to his family then took a pic wtih the boy and his brothers. How sweet is that? He didn't have to do that. Could have called a security guard over to escort the boy back but did it himself. I'd love to know what the brothers were thinking when they saw Bryce Harper bringing their little brother to them.
I was so wrong about Harper. He's grown on me quite a bit this year. Similar to Zach Grienke. I thought he was a dbag and it turns out he's just a goofy, weird guy.
Harper has so much passion for the game, and always seems to be doing the nicest things for fans and children alike. Super solid guy and a phenomenal talent, I regret misjuding him.
@@FuttBuckerson Still glad the nats won a ring the year they let him walk. They didn’t need his crying to win.
@@805fillmore nats are trash and will be trash for next 30 years
@@FuttBuckersonhe could you ever think Greinke was a dbag. He’s probably my favorite weird player of all time. Sitting in the stands during Covid games, change-ups faster than his 4-seam, responding to reporters with “flying cars” when asked about he sees in the future after joining a new team. He’s just a socially awkward guy who loves baseball but couldn’t always stand in the middle of the audience.
I was shocked, shocked to discover that Angel Hernandez was not a member of the first OJ Simpson jury.
My dad and I wrote a letter to mlb about hernandez back in 1996 and it's STILL happening
Same. He had me ejected from the White Sox game during a replay review, because I yelled keep it fair and held a dollar bill in the air. We wrote letters to the team as well as major league baseball, and the White Sox gave us four tickets to an upcoming game but MLB did nothing.
@@liveox9 well at least you got tickets... we got no reply... haha
I remember when CC Sabathia called out how terrible he is, and STILL they’ve done nothing about it
Hey, so did I!
@@liveox9he threw you out? As fan he threw you out?
The larger bases might not have been a factor, but the new rule of only three throws to first definitely did.
There isn't much that every team and every fan base can agree on, but I think Angel Hernandez being garbage is one of those things.
Man, digging through his games is actually sickening.
For real!
Can a team blackball an ump ?
@@Turnkey_BM I remember a couple of years ago it seemed the only umpires the Phillies got were Angel Hernandez, CB Bucknor, and especially Joe West. It created a lot of entertaining if completely farcical games.
Nah, he actually makes the game more exciting, it adds to the game in a way. If there was no variable with umps then people wouldn’t be able to go on and on about the umps which they love to complain about.
I think I have a solution to the Angel Hernandez problem. If you successfully challenge an umpire's call three times in the same game, the umpire is thrown out. If they get thrown out three times in a season, they're suspended for the rest of the season. If they're suspended two seasons in a row, they're fired.
It's beyond criminal to keep Angel umpiring. I'm surprised the justice department hasn't investigated him throwing games
Honestly, he's so terrible that it's hard to accuse him of favoritism. He screws everyone. His strike zone is so all over the place, I sometimes think he's just closing his eyes and using the force.
Given how intertwined gambling is with sports these, this isn't an outlandish suggestion.
He thinks he isnt a crew chief because of... what else??? Racism of course
@@callmeshaggy5166is he cheating for the under? He screws both teams 😂
This has been one of my favorite rants from Rich. Outstanding segment. 🖖
The Players Association should file a grievance if Harper gets fined. Enough is enough w/ Angel Hernandez. MLB is scared to fire him but I bet if the PA does that or sues for compensation for any fines going forward w/ Angel Hernandez, maybe that will force him out.
It’s kind of pathetic that if the players had to pick Angel Hernandez or Stevie Wonder to umpire game seven of the World Series, 💯 would vote for Stevie Wonder.
Stevie can hear the game better than Angel can see it.
As long as he sings the national anthem. Followed up by Sir Duke
They should just fire him and be done with it and take whatever is coming. He clearly has dirt on someone high up in MLB. But enough is enough.
@@scotttild agreed but unfortunately MLB doesn’t want the court case when Angel sues.
Just because a bad call was made doesn’t mean you can act like that. He deserves the fine
It makes no sense how a person can be so bad at their job and have zero repercussions
That is what unions are for.
"Protect the Incompetent. Screw the Accountable"
Hernandez has been the poster child for getting rid of the ump's for years now.
There are only a few absolutes in life........death, taxes, and Angel Hernandez not knowing the strike zone.
"You sound like Bill Plaschke.... He's the worst!"
No truer words have ever been stated on this show. I laughed HARD out loud. Rich's reaction was priceless.
Plaschke really is the worst. I’m biased though because he came at Braves fans
Haha yup. I hit fast forward if I see he's on Around the horn. Cringex500

He's such a train wreck. So terrible you HAVE TO watch.
My favorite thing to say to describe him is that he has a face made for radio and a voice perfect for silent movies... yet there he is on tv. He's stealing money from the LA Times or whoever employs him. It's embarrassing & he should be criminally prosecuted for felony robbery.@@jamesd6717
Back in the 70's and 80's, before the LA Times became a liberal rag, they had some great sportswriters like Jim Murray, Allan Malamud, Scott Ostler and Mike Downey. Plaschke is unreadable and unwatchable on TV.
no umpire accountability at all. also if you have an ump KNOWN for controversial calls, it's time to fire them.
Scary part is there is an Angel Hernandez in every profession including making decisions in health care that people's lives depend on, courtrooms that people's futures depend on, politicians that make decisions for cities/states/countries!! 😬
True. Diversity hires are everywhere
What do diversity hires have to do with it? Now an argument could be made that the Umps union doesn't want to get rid of him because he's cried racism before but that has nothing to do with diversity hires. Of course, I don't think any amount of shittyness on an umpire is going to get them fired because of their union. Again, different issue.@@CM-rg9zg

Re-watching this 6 months later and the Demon Hernandez calls have only gotten worse.
It has been more than obvious for many years that he does it purposefully... Only he knows why, other than the fact that many people despise him due to his blatant obfuscation of plainly simple calls... No one could possibly be this bad... Unless of course they were doing it on purpose
He's a toddler, like most umpires, refs, cops, security guards, or anyone else who enforces the rules. He craves attention, he not skilled enough to play the game, hes not even skilled enough to be a good ump so he does this bullshit so people know he actually exists, instead of just forgetting about how shitty he is like we do with most shitty people.
I'm not sure he does what he does entirely on purpose, I just think he relies on his emotions far to easily. Idk, i may be giving him too much credit, as it really does look like he gets a sense of satisfaction in the chaos of the moment when confronted. I just can't believe someone could or would screw with the beautiful sanctity of baseball
He has a huge grudge against MLB and some teams. He is a showboat and thinks people want to watch him He is a leftist entitled idiot with a huge ego. He need to just be fired.
He's throw the games on purpose, and it's insane that he isn't being investigated for it.
Def has some distant friend of a cousin betting on games it’s the only explanation.
Angel Hernandez…..”Arrogance combined with incompetence”… Perfectly defined Rich.
If I'm the umpires union I pay off Angel's contract and pay him to retire before he makes the umpire position extinct in baseball. It sucks that the solution to somebody being terrible at their job is to reward them, but God damn if I never hear his name again I'd be ok with it.
I got into baseball this year to more or less check out the new rules & am constantly astounded by how umpires are allowed to act. Obviously you are going to miss calls sometimes (not to the rate of Angel Hernandez mind you) but some of them will smile about it and give such smug responses to the players. Can't believe they are allowed to act that way and continue to perform poorly.
Chris Brockman "We're talking 4 extra inches?"
Every guy: "4 inches is A LOT"
Hell, I'd take one inch more and be happy😂
Angel is pissed off cause of his court case and now he’s making bad calls purposely
100% agree. He has no claim and just making a point. MLB should just get rid of him and settle the lawsuit and move on. Bad for the game all around. I cringe every time I see his name.
If I know my city, the "I'm probably going to be fined for being right, again" shirts will be rolling out this weekend, if not already
Facts. One thing we are gonna do is make shirts or hoodies about something lol.
The real question is will Sirianni be wearing it or not
You know how they can ban a fan from a stadium. All 30 teams should do that for Angel Hernandez so when he shows up, they won’t let him enter the stadium.
There is no hardcore baseball fan who has not heard the name of Angel Hernandez. He is infamous for terrible umpiring. If someone told me he would be an umpire in MLB this long I wouldn't believe it and yet here we are.
There’s only two umpires I believe most baseball fans know by name. Joe West and Angel Hernandez. Also examples of being known for the right and for the wrong reasons.
The key thing Rich said was Angel's arrogance
That signature on the helmet is literally the silver lining of this story.
I don’t have an issue with much said here, but I will say it’s straight denial to say Acuña would have a 40/70 season with the smaller bases. The larger bases this year helped a lot, he had 29 last year, he’s at 72 now, in 2019 (the year he played the most games) he had 37 stolen bases… you can’t say 72 steals has nothing to do with bigger bases
I'm positive that there will be a crucial play in the playoffs where he's involved and makes a difference in the outcome
Don’t they keep him out of the playoffs which is why he sued for ‘racism’?
Yeah they dont give him playoff games cause of how trash he is. Only reason hes still an ump is due to the unions@@pitmclord
The union represents all its members as strongly as possible. That's the union's job. Being a tenured union member does NOT mean you can never be fired. It just means there's a process. MLB is afraid to utilize that process because Hernandez has proven he not only WILL sue but he will pull the race card. MLB is to blame because they are too cowardly to do what they need to do. They've decided to just wait until he retires rather than risk bad PR.
luckily not a world series tho, hasnt worked one of those since 05.
@@SeriouslyLarry okay but at this point it seems like it’s worse PR keeping him on. The man will stubbornly work until he’s dead. I’m sure of it

Hear, hear on that. Conjures memories of Andy screaming “He buried it! HE BURIED IT!”
For some of them, being an MLB Umpire is like being a weather forecaster: You can be wrong ALL THE TIME and still keep your job.
I read one line that said "Angel Hernandez is so bad that when he gets out of the shower, he calls his balls "strikes."
Is there anyone in the media who has access to questioning the MLB umpires Union regarding this hack of an umpire??? Some accountability needs to be taken.
Of all the rule changes, I don't like the limited throwing over. That gives free passes. And I really wish they would get rid of the extra inning free runner. If anything, maybe start that at the 12th inning or something.
I agree
Yep. Terrible changes.
I thought this was a new video based on what happened yesterday LOL
Angel Hernandez very famously has NOT been given opportunities to umpire in the postseason. He even brought a racial discrimination suit against MLB, which ended with the judge essentially saying, "No, you're just bad at your job." 😂
The last time he had an opportunity to umpire in the postseason he had 4 calls challenged and overturned in 3 innings of a Redsox/Yankees game
i agree they need to hold umpires accountable
It's a curious thing that MLB keeps trying to figure out how to keep people interested in baseball, yet they never consider how horrible calls by Angel (and others) frustrate, not just the players, but the fans as well. There's enough legitimate disappointment in baseball without the shoddy mediocrity the unionized umpires contribute. Fans want and deserve excellence.
Eh, I hated Angel’s wrong call, but I can’t pretend it wasn’t entertaining. Bryce turned it into a moment I’ll remember forever.
@@samsmith1999 I come from a long line of ancestors who aren't entertained by players being frustrated by a bad call. Fairness was a big emphasis in my upbringing, so I don't get any pleasure when people are treated unfairly. I know I can't fix the world, but at least let's have fairness in structured sports. 🤷🏾♀️
BTW, I'm NOT a Phillies fan. I'm a fan of all players receiving the best officiating possible. If some jackass can't measure up, can his sorry behind.
GO 'STROS!!! 🧡💙
I hate the new rules. It's not fair to other players that played before them with the bases when their numbers are compared and I personally liked the fact that a pitcher could throw over as many times as they wanted. We're missing out on pitchers and batters being able to use all their tools. Taking forever to throw to mess with a hitter and then the hitter calling time out to reset or the hitter calling time out to mess with the pitcher was a part of the game.
😂 I wasn’t ready for brockman to say “he’s the worst”. I love it
The only way it's ever gonna change is if a team is brave enough to just walk out on the game over one of his errors. Literally, everyone pack up their things and walk out the stadium.
I see this comment everytime Angel Hernandez is the topic, but haven't seen it yet, so I'll say it.
If Angel Hernandez had one more eye, he'd be a cyclops.
To put the bigger size of bases in perspective, if 1st base is 2" closer to second and 2nd base is 2" closer to first then...
* the 40/70 means that Acuna had to run 23 feet less to steal 70 bases ((70 bases x 4")/12 inches per foot)
* 3000 stolen bases means runners had to run 1000 feet less to steal a 1000 bases ((3000 bases x 4")/12 inches per foot)
hernandez purposely does these as an F-you to MLB because he thinks they screwed him and he knows they can’t do anything about his bad calls
They can they just don't want to. He has some dirt on someone. But this will get real ugly at some point.
You have a point about the Cardinals throwback jersey, very nice. They might have the best uniform in baseball.
Why does he still have a JOB?! Hernandez needs to GO GO GO!
Unions
If there is legit no dirt Angel has on MLB, then the only reason I can imagine MLB won’t make a stand against Angel is out of fear of the umpires union striking in protest. MLB has a mountain of evidence to make a case against Angel to be dismissed from MLB officiating. Do it or don’t.
I blame the home plate umpire. He didn't have to ask for help.
To say the bases being bigger makes no difference at all is an ignorant thing to say. He knows nothing about baseball. Dumb take.
It's a huge problem that players, execs, fans all know he is awful yet they can't get rid of him. Unions are so weak in this country unless it's a totally useless one like MLB Umps.
As a lifelong Pirates fan who is no fan of Harper's: I was complaining at that call.
The fact Angel has managed to survive Philly twice these past two years - last year's incident with Kyle Schwarber - is beyond my imagination.
Hernandez has a Napoleon complex to him
How in the hell can Angel eat any food in Philly.
@@robho3308Answer: He brings food with him. Let somebody find out where he is in philly XD.
Angel was indeed left off of postseason ump crews and the sued MLB. The league's defense was "your honor, it's Angel Hernandez" and the judge ruled in MLB's favor lol.
Seems to me that Ángel Hernández enjoys to have the spotlight on him no matter if blews a game. The best umpire is the one you don´t notice because his great job.
The players need to refuse to take the field if Angel Hernandez is on a crew!
I would feel so uncomfortable if I had to have Angel on my 4 man umpire team.
Yes. You have to wonder what it’s like being on his crew….
Angel Hernandez is an embarrassment to the game. Truly. Not hyperbole. He is atrocious. Umpiring is broadly not great, but Angel is so far beyond bad that it defies apt description. It is laughable that he had the gall to sue the league. Sports officiating is to running for or holding political office as Angel Hernandez is to Trump.
Any company would fire an employee as inept at their job as Hernandez years ago. It's like having someone who has started a fire multiple times at a factory that is never fired.
Love how this was suggested today to me after those terrible strike calls 2 days ago
If they can't fire an ump based off of historically bad performance couldn't we just allow teams to challenge more of their calls? If this call was challenged it would've been overruled in seconds.
Angel Hernandez after watching the replay: “See, I told you, you went.”
In 2017 Hernandez sued MLB crying racism because they wouldn’t give him a World Series assignment or a promotion to crew chief.
MLB responded by immediately giving him an assignment for both the 2017 All-Star game, the 2017 ALDS & the 2018 ALDS. They also fined an Oakland A’s player $10,000 for saying that Hernandez was a bad umpire. The case was finally resolved in 2021. MLB won.
Between 2017 & 2021 MLB’s saving grace was the fact that instant replay overturned all but 1 of his calls.
Despite the ongoing lawsuit Hernandez was given a written reprimand for eavesdropping on a “closed” interview between an umpire & MLB during an investigation into why Crew Chief Hernandez & crew delayed a game for 20 minutes while they were in conference trying to understand the rules. He received another reprimand when after the pitcher in a 2013 game threw a no-hitter Hernandez had him autograph 11 baseballs ostensibly for Hernandez to sell them.
MLB may have won the lawsuit but they don’t want the headache of another one.
We need a stat on the percentage of plays called by him were overturned
Union rules agreement, he can not be removed by MLB for poor performance at his job. Although potentially the review system could actually be changed where his calls are subject to review
Get. Rid. Of. Him. By any means necessary. Make sure it happens in Philly so that no judge or jury will fail to acquit the party involved.
I remember CC Sabathia going on a fairly candid monologue about how awful Hernandez was. I was surprised but happy how blunt he was
Just out of curiosity because I have no idea. Can a team refuse to play knowing who’s umpiring?
That is what the teams need to do to get rid of him... MLB will do something then.
The fact that the homeplate umpire asked for an appeal on a clear non swing also says something.
He must ask by rule.
MLB is scared to death to discipline Hernandez because of fear of racism accusations.
Angel Hernandez sued MLB for discrimination because he wasn’t allowed to work the WS and become a crew chief. MLB played a tape of Angel’s work in court and he lost.
When the kid was interviewed during the game, he said he still hated the umpire even though he got the helmet.
Greatest regret of my life is the Yankees didn’t sign Bryce Harper
WTF?
I blame the umpire union, they’ve protected bad officials from accountability.
the interview he did with Taryn Hartcher was incredible too, definitely need to go watch it! he was so well spoken about it
Criminal activity is esteemed in this country
You get unlimited challenges if Angel makes the Call.
Chris Brockman bases went from 15” to 18”. So that’s a half foot vs 4 inches. When you add the pitcher’s 1.35 secs to home plus the 2.0 pop time that half foot does make a fairly significant difference. But the pick rule does absolutely suck!
Two things people need consider when doing the easy thing and piling on Angel Hernandez:
1. The current MLB check-swing rule is broken and 100% subjective. It is a strike if "“a pitch that is struck at by the batter and is missed.” What most people think the rule (he went half way, the bat crossed the front of the plate, he "broke" is wrists) are not actually part of the rule, although different umpires may use one of those standards when making this subjective call.
2. There are certain things all players know will lead to an automatic ejection and walking up the baseline to argue a call on a check swing is near the top of that list. Whether the umpire is right or wrong with their call has no impact on the decision to eject.
Hate on Angel all you want (I do too, it is fun and the majority of umpires would have called that play a no-swing) but the MLB rules committee and Harper are as much to blame for this as Angel is.
If you think the bigger bases didn’t have an impact on the number of stolen bases, consider how many times in a season a player is caught stealing by the smallest of margins - two inches, an inch, half an inch. Those are all now stolen bases.
I'm glad Umpires and Surgeons don't have the same Union.
I've said on another channel
The only way MLB does anything about this is if the next time an Umpire wrongly causes himself to be the focus in a game
Every fan in the stadium needs to leave in unison and tell MLB they are boycotting until there is as much accountability for umpires as there is towards players
Up to suspension and termination for wrongful or incompetent actions
4 inches on the bases is HUGE.
Every single bang-bang play this year would have been an out last year.
Just PAY ANGEL OFF!!! Take a collection from the players as well as the league and BUY HIM OUT! It’s not just the players who have issues with him. Instant replay makes him a laughing stock for ME as a fan. He gives the umpires union a bad name for THEM! Get him GONE and ASAP.

Has your cohost ever seen a close play at second??? 2 inches is an INSANE difference. Wouldn’t hurt to get a baseball analyst on the crew.
Angel Hernandez has ruined baseball games for 3 decades? He simply makes MLB look like a joke. It's one thing to employ an idiot in the back office, but to have one on display during national television is a clown show.
