  • This wonderful little pattern from fly tyer Mike Mercer is a great all-rounder that was originally designed as a crippled caddis fly, but it can be fished successfully under most hatches and conditions. Pay special attention to the proportions and amount of material, as it can be easily overdressed.

Perfect! When I grow up (I am now 77 and have been tying for 54 years) I want to achieve your level of perfection. At my age I'd better hurry up. You mentioned some scissors but I didn't catch the name. Would much appreciate your providing it.

Brilliant work with a lovely pattern. It looks like a real improvement to a traditional elk hair caddis

Oh Barry. You made that look so easy. After all my FB moaning yesterday I can see where my errors creep in. Not having that super long elk hair, and using shorter bleached paradun hair, wasn't helpful. Back to the bench. That is by far the best explanation and video online.

Glad to help, the long elk and keeping the Z-Lon long is the key!

Very nice Barry. Nice tip on the hackle preparation and great minimalistic proportions. One observation, MM designed the body/rib to extend much further into bend as it resides within film.
