Hello Folks and hey Bear! The most accurate thing ever said on this podcast was, “people at desk shouldn’t be telling farmers how to farm.” Coming from a farmer it is getting ridiculous! I’m all for the safety of consumers and environment, but we got written up by food safety because deer tracks were found in our field. They suggested we put up signs to keep deer out. Hate to break it to the lady, but as far as I know deer can’t read. What do I know though I’m just a backwoods farmer. Love you guys!

Nate!!! You can’t steal Brian’s spotlight!
Regarding robots: Ray Bradbury published a short story titled “The Pedestrian” in 1951. The main character gets arrested by a robotic police car because he is out walking at night. He is taken to the “Psychiatric Center for Research on Regressive Tendencies” because he’s not home on his electronics like the rest of the city. When I teach this story to my sophomores, we have a fabulous discussion about technology. Then the bell rings and they file out with their eyes glued to their phones.

All the robot take-over talk reminded me of the 1993 movie 'Demolition Man', with A.I. just watching and monitoring people all the time, everywhere - that seems way creepier than cool, but I agree with Aaron that it will happen so gradually that we won't notice until we are in it fully and it is too late, and, therefore, robots definitely should not have self-perservation instructions. Side note: Dusty couldn't be in the group shot of the schedule release video because he was supposed to be up on stage (as per blurry Big Foot shot shown earlier). Having worked at a University for nearly 30 years, Aaron's surprise that the University did not hand him his actual degree had me cracking up. Then to double down on it by saying some of his friends had the same thing happen was hilarious. Universities hold their commencement ceremonies the last week of the semester which is also finals week. They don't give out the actual diplomas at commencement because they don't know if the student will actually pass all their classes and graduate. They mail the diplomas a few weeks later once the grades for the semester are recorded. If you graduate in December and walk the next May, they still will mail the diploma to you because it is too hard to have your diploma in the degree holder when hundreds or thousands of students are going to walk across the stage in any given ceremony. Hey Bear! and go Chico State Wildcats!

They reported that these robots were programmed to feel “happiness, sadness, pain, and anger”. The first one I get…nothing wrong with a bunch of happy robots running around…but how much hubris do these robot scientists have to program robots to feel sadness, pain, and subsequent anger? I swear…if this is what leads to our downfall, I will blame those robot scientists.

Everyone gets a diploma cover or a rolled-up, blank sheet of paper, and then the actual degrees are conferred shortly after and mailed out by the end of the month. This comment is coming in a couple days late, but hopefully you read this Brian... I had an idea for the ending of every show moving forward---- "Nates final thought" In honor of Jerry Springer passing away, have Nate do a Final Thought at the end of every show. Seems like he already kind of does that already, but maybe put a little more umf into it and make it all sappy but also funny. Just a thought😉

I think it's funny that everyone wants to correct Aaron when he says something wrong as if we all don't do the same thing.

Funny story about Michael J Fox and Doc Hollywood! My parents and I had been watching Spin City, when my dad suggested we watch Doc Hollywood, because he remembered it being a good movie. Which it was, but what we didn't expect from it's PG-13 rating was full frontal nudity from the female lead. It made for an awkward moment with my parents and all but a hilarious memory as well.

As a teacher I'm not worried about AI. Years ago when books became a thing (maybe Brian was still in school?), some speculated there would no longer be a need for teachers. The number of teachers expanded exponentially.
I teach middle school students and it's very easy to tell if they used a program or their parents on an assignment. One option is to have them fact check or find sources for what the AI program writes.
    I'll go proofread this now.

In HS (1996-1997) timeframe I took Spanish and learned of an English-Spanish translator website. Every assignment was input and copied the answer. Being a dumb teenager when I would get assignments back 100% with comments from the teacher “how do you know how to do this? We haven’t covered this yet” my dumb adolescent mind would actually wonder if he knew, not like failing every test didn’t give it away too.

When we moved from TN to Boston, the local grocery chain near us had a security robot named Marty that would follow you around closely and say “patrolling” every few minutes. Very annoying and always in the way. It was pretty scuffed up and we asked an employee about it. He said that they regularly had to deal with annoyed customers punching it. I have to say it was a humorous sight to see elderly men cursing at a robot that came to their knees in a thick Boston accent.

Alright, I'm sure I'm not the only one that needs some closure on the Emu with a gun. How is the Emu shooting the gun and would he even be accurate enough to take down a lion with a hand gun? They use huge caliber rifles to take down lions. Watch the Ghost in the Darkness.

Was listening to the Stuff You Should Know podcast’s recent episode “The Colosseum” and they mentioned Nate and his comedy for some reason. Made me realize The Nateland Podcast is a lot like SYSK, but with a little more humor and a lot less information.

I’ve got to know just how many reunions his class has? Mine from 2000 has only done a 10 year reunion. The 20 year was canceled due to COVID but I can’t imagine people wanting to get together every 5 years.
