I bought a 70 camaro it runs really rich when I start it up so rich makes my eyes water and there's smoke. I never had a holley with an electric choke. I made adjustments like you said and it's so much better. Thank you for your video such a big help. 👍
Probably one of the more comprehensive choke adjust vids made. Very well said the heat soak can frustrate ya. In the Northeast however fully closed may not even do it on them zero degree mornings. The humidity here really affects the Ethenol fuels in the winter so that does not bother fuel injection much because of the high fuel pressure but on say a carb with a fuel regulator you can be into a challenge in the winter just to get the vehicle to start.
thank you for explaining this is such simple terms. I followed your directions and they led to my successful diagnosis of a choke issue I`ve been fighting for 3 months. "3 months man. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry". I have been having an issue with the fast idle as well. I feel like it should kick in right away but it doesn't. it takes a long time. tonight while following your directions I found that the fast idle cam isn't setting when I push the throttle in all the way. Its also only idling at about 900 on the fast idle cam vs the 1600 I`ve read it should. I'm going to adjust that and see what we get.
How did it turn out do you remember? I also thought mine should set in immediately but it doesn’t. It eventually did get up to 1300 at one point but before it would start and only idle at 500-400 just to eventually die. Then I had to mess with my curb idle to get it to idle which obviously isn’t good.
Great video, now I just need instructions on how to reach the fast idle screw. Im running a stock intake with a 4160. No way to reach the fast idle screw with flat blade screwdriver or a 1/4 wrench.

I have a holley street warrior and I have the choke set so that it comes off about where I like it (about 150°F coolant temp or so it's already off which is good) but when I first start it the choke break doesn't pull the choke plate open at all, so on initial startup it's being choked too much and starts flooding
@@marcelineingot9359 Could be a vacuum leak. Too much vacuum leads to high idle and pumping the brake changes the vacuum signal. Check the big rubber hose coming off of the brake booster--it probably has a hole in it or might be unplugged somewhere.
So it turned out my brand new holley 4160 had a dead electric choke. It would open with engine temp, but it would never fully open causing the fast idle came to catch on the last step every time you hit the throttle. Holley, you owe me $50 for a new choke. I ordered one through oreillys because ya'll don't respond to emails.
Yeah. If you can get to the fast idle speed with out. Wide open throttle that be nice i have the asv2 from edlenrock. Why edelbroc?. Engineering take a day off or am I missing something? Also when you said crack those 3 open and rotate. What what the relationship to the cam at that point. Did you manually disengage the choke before cracking those loose or was choke still engaged on the cam when you did that. You just jumped right in there with crack loose and adjust
Brand new out of the box 4160 vacume secondary electric choke. Car is running great but fast idle. Tried adjusting everything. olly tech. Suggested extra spring on trottle. Didn't work. I would re adjust the idle. Once I started shifting gears and got to the Red light. Idle jumps up. My mechanic after 4 days of racking his brain finally removed the spring from the idle screw and pulled it apart slightly to create more tension. Problem solved.
my choke plate is stuck open. I have to open throttle to open or close the plate. got power to the choke but does not do anything at start up or after warming it up for a while. what is the possible fix.
I will repeat from above "I had the same problem and did not know it until I watched this video. My solution was to take the choke off the side (I pulled the Carb from the eng.) and layed it on the side and found the red cam lever in behind had skipped over the shaft coming out of the choke causing it to be stuck. I put it back into place and noted that it was stiff so I got out some jigaloo lubricant and sprayed all the joints and it all works fine now. Adjusting the PITA high idle is the real issue for me now."
Just an FYI. Don’t open up throttle at all to retighten screw on cam. If you tighten the screw while throttle is pulled open, it’ll set your fast idle at that high idle setting. Once you have the desired rpm. Just manually close choke and set fast idle screw to cam. Lawd
@@David-fl4xw becayse it the throttle is open by hand you don’t know what Rpm you’re at, and if you fasten fast idle to that opening you can essentially start your car and be at 2500 rpm with choke on.
@@Se7enthsonSS ahh so it basically will double the fast idle cam. Gotcha. So just exclude holding the throttle open? The rest of the steps are okay to follow right? Thank you. I’ve been having an issue where I’ve been having to use the curb idle screw to even get the car to idle on cold start. Cold start, choke set correctly, idles at 500 drops to 400 then eventually dies out. So I’m assuming the “factory fast idle cam settings” are way off? I’ve only had it idle up to 1300 once, and that’s because I had turned the curb idle up, and then backed it off to let it do its thing.
@@David-fl4xw absolutely this whole video is 100% spot on. When he opens it he’s checking positioning as a reference. He’s also right when he says it can take a few times to verify. I ended up turning mine out a few times once a day to pin point where exactly I want it. Different way, and longer but effective.
@@Se7enthsonSS oh I gotcha. So I assume when he opens it he’s checking the relationship between the cam and screw and probably off camera letting go of the throttle and then adjusting the screw? I had an electric choke installed on my 1850. It has not worked as expected. After going through these steps twice, I may have discovered a couple problems. My fast idle screw (BTW a real pain to get to) cannot make contact with the red cam. The bracket or linkage the fast idle screw is threaded into does not line up with the cam. This bracket also rubs on the electric choke housing when it moves. Am I missing the correct fast idle parts?
I have a 670 Street Avenger. Holley needs to re-engineer the fast idle screw location. I can barely see it and only turn it a quarter turn at a time. Then when the engine is hot it's almost impossible.
Adrian Moreno there hard to see. You have to open the throttle 3/4 or so. It should drop down where you can see it. If not. Someone removed it. The assembly is a small screw and white plastic square piece. Larry
Finally clear concise instructions on setting up Choke, Thank You!! Great Job.
Just awesome. I’m not super knowledgeable on carbs and this had things going right away. I owe this man a beer!

Thank you thats why ive been a holley customer for all these years

Can't wait to try this, I have never worked on a carburetor before! Pray for me.
Lotta frustration. Lotta good feels when you get it just right
Thank you. Do you have a similar video with a non-electric choke?
Played around with the choke for days. Until I watched your video. Spot on. Thank you.

Can you make a video like this in action on an engine? That would be helpful.

Maybe I should have watched this before I got mine all screwed up? Might have a vacuum leak too. Idling about 1700 rpm on a stock Datsun.

What ambient temperature should I aim for when doing this procedure?
Thanks for the help! I have a car with a holly onit and i didnt know how to adjust it and now i do

That helps. What’s the difference between the 2 idle screws? Fast idle and curb idle?
I believe the fast idle is for when the car first starts and the curb idle works after the car has warmed up.

The red cam behind the choke housing gets jammed and has to be pushed down manually.. Going nuts

you have to hold the throttle open slightly or it won't move the choke.

Will this work on the 4180?
Joe R I have a 4180 on my 351w ho in my 85 bronco and I hate that carburetor
When you start the vehicle does it have to be in drive(automatic)/neutral(manual) or can it be in park to do this adjustment
These settings are done with the vehicle in park or neutral with the parking brake on. Thx J

Good advice but not easy to do on the car. I took it off . That way you can see when it lifts off the throttle stop. Which means you've gone too far.
With a manual choke all the disappoinment and difficulties would go away.
Ima just do an LS swap😂
