Well, my blade too suffered a catastrophic failure one night where I could no longer continue due to being too drunk.
I failed in the strength test. Maybe my pommels were too cold.
So the lady asked me to sheath the sword and leave the forge.
I went home shamefully and with a broken pride.
And this did "keel" me.

Use wood for your palmal. When you make your blade, forge thick, grind thin. A thick blade is A great, strong blade. When it comes time to heat treatment, if your Forge is too small, use the tube method, it becomes one big hot oven!!!

Well they try to be as respectful and loving but they are judges sometimes strictness comes
Always the same, one with an ugly,heavy,clumsy but strong weapon that win agaisnt a beautiful sharp well balanced weapon that breaks... I always feel cheated
Justin Dems the durability test is kind of dumb, they really should put armor on dummy’s because that was what they would use it for beating in people who had armor

@@nova_4168 well, hitting a horse head does make sense, since it could happen on a horse back vs other cavalry. But other tests where they hit a battering ram for example were just dumb.
The sword that one wasn't really any of those things you said they were from what i could tell it was just strong but had a bad handle
Heats up metal unevenly, quenches... bends over knee when cold and untempered...blade snaps because it’s brittle..

the judges don't care about looks. functionality is premium. durability, function, handling, balance, comfort and aesthetics, in that order.

This test is significant because, as history shows, 5th century horses hadn't yet evolved skin. These beasts would often attack head first, and if our courageous Hun warriors hadnt had adequate blades, they would've faced almost certain doom.

When he was making his first blade, He should have pinned it, then tempered the blade. Often times when a blade warps, the heat treatment it’s not done correctly because he has to have an equal heat across the entire blade. He should have used the tube method to increase the length of the Forge, so he can heat treat it properly. I have seen this in the battle of the branches final round in the United States military episode.

Poor kid seemed wounded by that. Shame, he did good work for the most part. Just one mistake born out of inexperience, really. Least they were all gracious with him.

The most surprising thing about the show to me is. That they can find so many different blades for the champions to try and reproduce. I haven't been able to even goggle some of them.
Not to mention many have been iconic blades from movies as well
I've often wondered if they give the contestants an info packet. Professional armerers may spend many thousands on an extensive library and have the time to research including trips to museums (Solingen for example).

Most of the horse skull sword damage came from hitting the metal mounting bracket underneath the skull. It’s the coconuts all over again lol.

I mean swords are made to withstand metal too tho no offense against the blacksmith tho he was just a bit inexperienced
Doesn't matter, the blade shouldn't have broken. He made a mistake with the heat treatment - when burning out the handle, he heat up the tang of the already tempered blade. That's a great way to induce grain growth RIGHT at the neck of the hilt, where most of the stress builds up during a strike.

Did you know he actually says "keal"? Its something he came up with in his youth which means "keep everyone alive"

2 things:
1 = At 8:21 you can see Doug's disappointment. He really liked that sword during the "keel" test and was rooting for it.
2 = At 3:07 I think that is the helm the Nord Barbarian wears during the cinematic trailers of Elder Scrolls Online.

Why is it always that some old dude is matched with a kid, and the kid always looses because he obviously does not have the skill to beat a man with 20 years of blacksmiths under hes belt.

@@mechwyn I don't know about that his blade did take a bend durning the kill test. If his blade had not broken it would have probably been neck and neck going in to the sharpness test. Also aside from breaking we don't know what other damage his blade took during the strength test.
They start with bunch of contestants, whoever ends up as last 2 are the 2 most skilled. This isn't forged in fire junior, sorry bud. Nickelodeon might have a show with just teenagers for ya

Randy kind of looks like he could be Christian Bale in disguise, preparing for his next role as a blade smith.
As an experienced viewer, when I see a successful Damascus blade, I know he already won.
That young guy seems to not have as much training as other blacksmith in the show. Most everyone seems to use vice method versus just bending back with knee. Tip area seemed cooled down more than rest of the blade anyways during heat treating.

I think Damascus is profoundly overrated. If all knives throughout millennia were Damascus, we'd be in search of a way to eliminate patterns to get a beautiful simple shiny look à la chrome.
In alchemic fashion, bladesmiths go through laborious processes to generate a wavy pattern. Strangely, it appears most are never satisfied?
To each his own is the old axiom. I just feel with the mania in today's marketing world, Damascus is having its 15-minutes of fame.
When ever I watch this it always the first one is the one that wins
