Golfer's Dream Backyard Renovation - My Home Putting Green

  • In this video, Golf Podcast Co-Host Michael Fasano shares his backyard golf renovation project from start to finish. Most avid golfers will agree that having a home putting green or driving range right in your yard is a dream come true.
The project took 3.5 months from the planning to the final touches. Although MUCH cheaper than a pool, this project certainly wasn't cheap and the putting green still requires some minor maintenance including keeping it clean in the fall, covering it in the winter, and well … that’s pretty much it.
As for cost, depending on the material you use and the excavation required, backyard putting greens can vary dramatically in cost. But we're happy to report that for the size of the green Mike had installed, the total cost of the golf green portion of the project with labor was under $3,500! Tree excavation, plants/shrubs, and the stones were a majority of the overall project expense. So if you have the land clear for a green, it could fall right into an affordable budget!
Mike opted for the turf called Precision Putt from SYN LAWN and you can tell by the quality that it will last a LONG time. Now let’s see if it helps his short game….

i would build a putting green, an outdoor covered area to hang out and watch movies off a nice projector. The projector would double as a hitting projector to play some rounds of golf via the Golf Simulator. Definitely fire pit, maybe a nice built in Jacuzzi, and a Halfcourt basketball area with caging around. Gotta have my basketball that is a must. #warriors #dubnation :)

DanTuber I agree with you! He could have built an awesome putting green, pool, jacuzzi and all of the trimmings and maybe he wanted to but wifey vetoed it. So, one step at a time. If they take out another 15k home equity to build it then maybe their mortgage becomes unmanageable. So I don’t know their financial situation. I just know that we all love golf!

Ha, funny. Every single square foot of this particular (SynLawn) turf is pretty expensive. Believe it or not, I (Mike) actually went over budget to make it 30% bigger from the original design. And yes, feeding the family is most important :-)

Great use of the space given the hill. Sure that was the driver of the positioning of the bunker and size of the green. Those downslope bunker shots have to be a monster. How much maintenance are you seeing maintaining everything going forward. Grab yourself some chipping mats and you got a green to chip into all over the yard.

    • @Golficity

I like what you did here Mike from Golficity. I do, however, have to agree with everyone on here saying that the project is small. I would have made the green bigger, made a little bit of fairway grass to practice chipping in, got a net and golf hitting mat to practice with. Im also not sure about the location of the bunker. You don't really see a bunker on a downhill slope like that; on the other hand, it could have been just the perception that it was downhill. Im just saying that if you plan on doing a project like this, make sure to tackle all facets of the game, not just the short game. But, for what you had to deal with, it is a great start.

i want to do something like this also, but that layout is so off-putting.
The bunker is so sloped and the greens so small and close all you have is a SUPER awkward downhill shot.
then if you plan to chip from the other side you have all those walls in the way and don't mishit it or you'll send it into the lounge area.
that huge lawn section you grew could have been incorporated into the design. frankly i think having the fire pit area moved out of the way for a bigger green would have been a gooder plan. All i see that being good for is 10 foot putts and fringe chips (which isn't nothing), and a 30 minute distraction for the kids.

Did you have to put weed barrier in the sand bunker?? What did you do to keep all the sand in place, ie how deep is the sand itself?? I m getting ready to do a putting grean in my yard. Fortunately not faci g as much work as you had !!! Lol . Afraid to ask how much $$$$ you spent, nor is it my business. Nice job !!!

Having an issue with weeds in the bunker now. Even with the barrier. It’s hard to piece the price. 80% of the cost was the tree removal, excavation and those paver stones for the patio. The green project wasn’t all too much in the grand total of things. Maybe only 2-3k.

Is that bunker usable? It's on a big down slope with not much room to land or stop your shot.

Will you be installing something similar (the green) in the new office?

Do you like the bunker? Or is it more of a pain to clean up 🤣 I’m making my green and curious if there is anything you’d do different
