The Fairbourne Railway is so often overlooked by enthusiasts, it's great to see a really good video of the line. This film captures the magic of the line, it's trains, the surrounding dunes, mountain and estuary, everything - in fact it is better than the DVD I bought last time I visited the line.

What a charismatic and idyllic seaside railway story for a cold November evening, yes indeed!

A very good film Mr Baker, thanks for making it. We visited this railway in September, it was a grey and dismal Saturday and we were the only passengers. However, little Sherpa did us proud hauling us around. Like a few people have said, the staff were very friendly and even showed us around the shed and workshop. It made a couple of ageing duffers happy. I'm soon to retire and intend to join and help them out.

I visited many years ago when Katie’s sister loco Siän was also running. Brilliant railway, since then I drove Siän on the Windmill Farm Railway in Lancashire. She runs like a watch!

As you can tell from our film, we found the railway and staff to friendly and helpfull, the railway engines running we in good condition and the rolling stock was near mint. Fairbourne is not in the ffestiniog league but they have earn't and deserve their place as good seaside small narrow gauge railway.

This is a sad little 12" gauge line set in the sand dunes about 20 miles south of the Festiniog Railway. Perpetually broke and with little cash to spare for repairs the noises from the locos tell it all.
Its historic, being about 120 years old with beautiful scenery.

Excellent little railway. Whenever I visit Barmouth I try and visit the Fairbourne. Gala's can definitlt be a draw. I love to see the old favourites on rosta but its always great to see visiting engines. The one in the film was rather hansome, pity we couldn't see it on a full run but I guess it has a narrower guage. This video is calling me back to Wales.

Perhaps you would care to give the Railway a cash injection then Walter.
Its a fantastic little railway run by hard working people. All the engines and rolling stock are tested and safe for the general public's use. There's nothing "sad" about Fairbourne Railway. Its one of the happiest places in Wales.

Wonderful little railway that is unfortunate in that it has had more than it's fair share of issues no matter how small. (The balloon loop for example). It keeps going and has lots of support and it is a vital boost in tourism for the town espcially with the station on the cambrian only being request so it often gets overlooked. I always visit when in the area and hope it is there for many years to come

I would like to challenge what you said about the Fairbourne Railway recently. Firstly, as a committee member of the Fairbourne Railway Preservation Society I do not recall ever seeing your name on a membership list.
Secondly, there is nothing sad about the railway or the people who work or volunteer, as their efforts to keep this railway going is a wonderful achievement and should not be maligned especially from someone who admits he has not visited recently!

The person, who bought the railway in 1984, had already got 4 steam locos and 28 carriages of 12 1/4 inch gauge. It was cheaper for him to buy an existing railway and reduce the gauge than to build a new one from scratch.

No axe to grind-I am a member, and have seen the railway since 1949 tho' distance and and age now stop me from visiting.
My message was intended for an American friend who expected something like the FR.

So that's what Lyd piloting Russell would look like!

I know they have had to make adjustments in last few years, haven't we all, but I have feeling they have the correct balance to continue for many more years.

  • @iangoodman7395
    @iangoodman7395 11 лет назад

Lastly, a lot of people have put so much effort into keeping the railway open for the sake of all, members of the FRPS, staff, visitors and the village of Fairbourne. It is therefore very upsetting and unhelpful for people to give such negative and unsubstantiated comments as yours. In whatever context it was meant, as this could have a serious impact on visitor numbers.
I hope you will visit the railway in the near future to discover what a wonderful railway it really is!

  • @AndreiTupolev

Somewhere a bit different! Lovely coastal views and some splendid little engines. Penny is probably wondering at 11:15 whether she's grown, or whether these steam engines that are usually so much bigger than her have got smaller.

Seems a bit harsh. They seem to be doing a pretty reasonable job, with some cheerful staff. What noises from the locos are you referring to? They sound healthy enough to me. Are you sure you don't have some axe to grind with them?

    Dear Mr Goodman,
Looking through my records I find that my
Membership has lapsed, so my statement is incorrect, and I am out of order
being now just a member of the public.
As I mentioned originally I had no intention of my e-mail appearing on the
website and I regret this as it was intended for a friend in the USA.

Yes Mr Bareham, I agree. You are out of order, Big time. If you didn't want people to see your comment why didn't you delete it?. Your way behind the times, I suggest you visit the Railway for a true account of things. If your too old or live too far away to re-evaluate the Railway personally, it might be better to keep your mouth shut and your fingers away from a keyboard.
