John's jig is smaller, simpler and can handle wider stock.
My jig is faster and has a lot more flexibility in terms of spacing, also has the ability to take multiple cuts to hog out each slot so you don't need a dado blade. The sturdier box also means you can put a massive stack of long boards in it at a time.

It really is enjoyable to watch two of my favorite woodworkers working and joking with each other! As for the box joint jigs, each has its pros and cons. And interestingly, those are opposite each other. Somewhat as the two of you are. Each of you approach a project differently but with the same outstanding results!
Thank you both for sharing the visit you two had together! Again, it would be very interesting to see you two come up with the same project and/or build it together from your own shops!

I like the idea that one can build a jig that brings a faster and more precise way to do the job of box joints for our projects. Good job to both of you. You are both inspirations to the rest of us.

I've really enjoyed these team-up/face-off videos. I was really pleased to see you two did more than one of them while together.. Both jigs are pretty cool. I'd have to watch the build videos for both again before deciding which one would be easier to make as that would be the deciding factor for me.
This was fun watching two wood working geniuses exchange ideas and tips with a few jabs in as well.

Great banter guys! I think both have their benefits but for production and larger shops and projects Matthias you win in my book.
Matthias' for versatility and speed and John's for accuracy and width.
Though I guess Matthias' can be just as accurate but needs dialing in first.
Sorry Matthias, I'd go with John's as it also takes up less space and having a very small workshop that's a big consideration for me.
They are both amazing designs though... kudos to you both. :D
Once you've matched the blade with the rod it's a no brainer though, as you saw John's was a perfect fit first try and always will be from then on in. Matthias' needed dialing in. So I'd call John's more accurate and Matthias' more versatile as I said. :D
Easier said than done. Matching the blade to the rod means finding a blade with exactly the right kerf. None of the 20 or so sawblades I bought to date had a 1/8" kerf.

CryoGenUK yeah, Mathias has pretty big shops, so size isn't an issue for him, he usually likes making it once and using it until it breaks, I'm sure he could make a modified version thats smaller but it'd be a lot more complicated to build. And it still wouldn't be as small as the other.

I have been watching you Mathias for the last 5-6 months. It is heart warming to this Wood Butcher to see you both on the same video with the trivially rivalry, with enjoyable humor.
Really enjoying these series of videos Matthias, some friendly comparisons and light hearted jabs at each other.
I really like both jigs. One for size and convenience and one for variable ability. You both have a very creative design.
You guys are great individually and awesome together. I love the banter. Good comradery. John's for simplicity and Matthias's for flexibility. Bought plans for both but I have only made Matthias's so far.

I'm loving the shop visit series. You should both do more traveling and visit more shops! Fun stuff. The competition / home built tool comparisons are a hoot!
Nice adjustments at 2:40 and 7:30. Knowing these things by heart speeds up the work and makes it precise.

I have been subscribed to Mathias's channel for a couple years now and I often watch his videos over and over again and I seem to learn something new almost every time. But I have seen the other guy's videos too, and I do like the little box joint jig as well. The two of you make such a good team. It would be really cool to see you two build something intricate together as a project and cover it as a series of videos. Just a thought. Thank you for such great entertainment fellas.

Now you give me an idea for a show, "WoodBusters", you know who in which role.
A previous vid showed that the size of the kerf of the blade can have an effect on the quality of the end product. Being able to make such fine adjustments using Matthias's jig as can be done with Matthias's jig is a great advantage, though not used often. BUT we all have to change blades at some time. I vote for Mattias's jig for versatility but John's is the easier to use and the easier to build.

matthias wandel its like the challenge has been set between the both of you..there both very good designed box jigs!
I think for versatility and more functions Mathias is hands down the winner. For ease and clean cut the other guy. Really Mathias machine takes a bit to make sure cuts are good but once you get used to it he has the optimal machine. One jig to rule them all.

I just built Johns jig and my first test cut was perfect with the blade i had on my saw... for those saying you need to match a blade to the threaded rod haven't actually built it. There is more margin for slight error with Matthias's jig as there is no positive stop to index each cut accurately. It is more flexible for weird stuff, but for 99% of the people out there Johns does what you really NEED.
two awesomely talented men, if these two partnered up with a manufacturer to mass produce their jigs they would make millions. keep the excellent videos coming guys
You guys are both truly artisans. Hard work and practice makes people proficient, yes, but there's also an element of creativity that you both clearly are endowed with. Just discovered your videos...outstanding work by both of you!
The gears are cool, but John's little switch lever mechanism is probably a much more manageable (i.e., easy) build for some of us. Both jigs are obviously awesome, but at the end of the day, I think I'd go with simplicity…so John wins for me.

I am subscribed to both of these guys. It's like watching two sports cars pass me in my Prius. All I can do is look on in amazement! Great video and kudos to you both for your excellent jigs!

After reading some of the many comments here I will add that the Woodgears.ca jig has far more versatility than the other jig.
We have a Woodgears jig in our school shop and it has been used to create some creative variations on the box joint theme. Think variable spaced finger joints where the teeth vary in width from 1/8" to 1/2" or more. This jig rocks.
There where some other meatings from other RUclipsrs, but you both are the funniest guys to watch - and most interesting.
You really should admit that John's jig is a very good solution as well. Wouldn't make yours any less! With all the friendly rivalry a bit of courteousness would make it more pleasant to watch
I just want to say you guys are both are Awesome wood workers
One is huge but more versatile in terms of sizing and joint options (the one I chose and use) and the other is simpler and takes up less space... both are ingenious designs IMHO!
Both jigs are needlessly complex and both awesome examples of the engineering behind each one.

Big Fan of both of you guys . . . I see the friendly prodding was a blast to you both. This was loads of fun for all of us as well. I have been considering building a jig like this but had not considered which one to go with. Still not sure yet.
Really like these competitions. I learned so much from both of you. First from their websites and later on youtube. I just really like this kind hearted teasing you do for each other. Different perspective, different reasons and most importantly different persons making own very different solutions for same problem. Both have plus and cons, yet not either one is the best. Just the comparison of ideas gives so much. What to improve, is there an ultimate version of what you do etc. I just wish that some day I could complete something even nearly as good as you do in your field.
I'm highly amused by the fact I enjoy the videos of the Canadian so much. You two and Matt cremona who may live in the US but it's from Canada

I must say thanks for the long awaited video on the box joint jig. I know you guys are friends and i must say you both win on the contest of which one is better ? It doesn’t matter they both do what they are intended to do everything has its pros and cons in life and woodworking isn’t any different This video does get a two thumbs up from a entertainment value as its fun to watch you two go at it in fun my father used to tell me there are many ways to skin a cat do whats best for you as long as you get it done I see both sides in this situation as i like the mechanism that Marrhais developed but favor the simplicity of Johns jig so which one really is better ? It doesn’t matter they both work ! Without taking sides. If either of you two. As I think you both are smart guys and enjoy your channels equally alrgough i will add as I have gotten older I ted to keep things. Simpler as in the keep it simple stupid method or K ISS. As it is taught over the years of hiring and working with many apprentences in the woodworking industry that method has worked best overall especially with younger or less epericed people I was. Happy to see this video finally get posted and it was as funny as i thought it wold be as sarcasm Are both of your highlights in entertainment when you two get together and put out a video Hope to see more in the future. Hi Mattias, I use an Incra positioner attached to my router table fence. The smallest increment is 1/32". I always use a back stop to avoid blow out. I am not in a production setup and I do not need speed. Regards Colin in Northern Ireland

I can never decide if you guys like or hate each other lol. I love watching. Mathias I've wanted to build your jig for months but haven't got the time to cut gears. John k.i.s.s (keep it simple stupid) is the most productive most of the time. Difficult to judge. Both have their place. U guys could just send me one of each ;)
See for those bitching about all the other video's where Matthias rips John on clamps, biscuits, etc. John really had a field day on Matthias' Box Joint Jig. I don't see Matthias' getting upset. He took the criticism really well. John and Matthias have very different ways to doing the same thing. We all do and this series of videos is really showcasing these differences including differences of opinion. Both of these guys give as good as they take.
Matthias, John is right. Width is more important than length. But your box joint jig is so much cooler.

johns version is great smaller, simpler and easy to copy.. but Matthias was so creative on his design...
So I wanted Mattias's box joint jig but I made John's seemed faster to make. It works good. But I really want a pantarouter. Well if I still live in America after tomorrow I might try to make one and a bandsaw. I see your bandsaw design on several other sites so you have created a lot of value that you may never even know about. I have watched you both almost since the beginning. Actually you got me hooked on youtube, I wanted to make a wooden gear and that search lead me to you. Thank you

Matthias, yours has the versatility! The gears gives so much scope for customization! And youre a bit more humble about it :)
You really only need to cut two sizes of box joints. 1/4" and 1/2" Those two sizes cover thin and thick stock. The joinery is strong and looks appealing. It is efficient to make too. Neither of their jigs is practical for production.
