I have this album on Vinyl - fully autographed by the band after a gig at Bradford University in '75 - awesome gig . What talented people.... shame they were never massive - because THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN!!
My college year ‘75. I have this on vinyl but haven’t hear it in years. Don’t even hear it on the Old School Stations much less the Groove on Sirius. Maybe it’s time to put it in the rotation because it’s still a great song.
I made the Pilgrimage to the Hope n Anchor all the way from the NE of England to see them play more than once. One of the best bands the UK produced. Would have loved to see these and the AWB on the same bill!
I remember seeing Kokomo when I was a student at Sussex University back in the 70s. I just searched and found a list of every concert they ever did...and there it was - 12 February 1975. It's weird when you make a direct link between the present and a fixed date in your past, and you get a sense of what you felt on that day in your history. Had both of their first two albums. Can't find them on Tidal. Shame.
Like you , I saw them live supporting AWB at the Glasgow Apollo in May 76 ..... Liked them so much I went out and bought Rise and Shine the following day (on cassette for £2:49 .. lol)
WITH 2 45s YOU CAN MAKE THIS LAST FOREVER ON THE DANCE FLOOR! GREAT SONG! THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS CLUB CLASSIC FOR EVERYONE THAT MIGHT NOT KNOW IT FROM THE DISCOS/DANCEHALLS/CLUBS! See also "Mighty Mighty" by earth Wind & Fire... DAVEDJ
Yeah ... Would be '76 ... I saw them supporting AWB at Glasgow Apollo in May '76 - liked them so much I bought Rise and Shine the following day (on cassette for £2:49 ... lol)
Note to johncanderson: I agree. In high school I was kinda picked on by my m8's for my Undying Love of this SUPERB band! And NOTHING was heard about the Eponymous 3rd LP which REALLY shoulda been a hit as well. Alan Spenner, R.I.P. Thanx fer this, m8..
It's a shame that Kokomo - like Jess Roden, Cado Belle, Gonzalez, Café Jacques and so many other great British bands - never had the commerical success they deserved. Still, they made great music and - one likes to think - had a great time doing that, which is more than can be said about many 'successful' groups. And from what I know, most of these folks - some of whom had successful careers beyond this band (Hubbard and Spenner did Avalon-era Roxy Music, percussionist Linscott worked with Peter Townshend, Clapton, Elton etc... ) are still making fine music. This is a fine tune in the Curtis Mayfield, Bobby Womack, Chaka w/Rufus vein... and I can't seem to stop hitting RePlay.
I always chuckle when people wring their hands about others' lack of commercial success. It wouldn't have been the same if they'd gotten the attention of Phil Collins. The music would've undoubtedly become bland and devoid of all the things you like about it. So, don't wish "commercial success" on groups that were very happy were they were.
@@AFaceintheCrowd01 You might chuckle though those bands at the time weren't laughing. I was part of the scene that included the likes of Cado Belle and Cafe Jacques. Both died off due to lack of success. Not all success is the scale of Phil Collins, so such a comparison is redundant. Success the calibre of Squeeze, Madness or Caravan etc. would have been great for the bands and healthy for the industry. Ask Jess Roden if he would have liked a level of success that would have facilitated a long-term career. Darned right he would.
Great band producing great music use to play this alot when I lived a n Bermuda people would say who are they? Then be amazed that they were English!!!!!!!
Yes! Alan Spenner! His Bass lines on Jesus Christ Superstar are iconic. What’s The Buzz?... flow of consciousness Boogaloo Bass lines... never repeats even one bar... yet it is so happenin’. I almost am ready to post playing that Bass line... almost...
@BadNews88 Hopefully at some point there will be a tour and maybe some northen venues will be on the itinery......cos I will be there!!! I was still into rock when I saw them and my tastes changed for ever after the gig............happy daze....
anyone is 2020!? no... just me ok i guess ill just vibe here by myself :( also I can't believe it only has 462 likes!!! wtf this band needs more hype!!!
@paulburke621 Hi Paul,No it wasn't any of them thanks! It's definitely a Kokomo song? The lyrics are "When the night is low,any you're feeling cold? We've gt to steal away, steal away?
I'm trying to find a song that I think was by Kokomo? It's called "Steal away"?Does anyone have it or know which album it's from?I can't find it anywhere!Thank you.

Blue eyed funk at its best. A classic
I've been a fan of Kokomo since the late 70's. Listening to them is still the BOMB!!!
They’re damn good
I had the honor to see and listen Kokomo live in London when I was a young boy. They are still my number 1 funk band

Alan Spenner was one of the best r&b bass players ever - right up there with Jamerson, Rainey, Jemmott. A great musician.
Awesome. Love this band. Great live to boot.
I made the Pilgrimage to the Hope n Anchor all the way from the NE of England to see them play more than once. One of the best bands the UK produced. Would have loved to see these and the AWB on the same bill!
i did in 1976 (I think) in Bristol ..... When AWB finished everybody was chanting for Kokomo to come back on - good times
Yes! You exist! I found you. I had the word Kokomo on my mind and I KNEW I use to have your records! This great; hearing it al over again!
WHEN I WAS STATIONED AT ELLSWORTH AFB SOUTH DAKOTA, WE ROCKED!! THIS ALBUM. KOKOMO WAS THE GROUP.
Wow.Been loking around for thisfor ages. The one that got away.
Used to tour them in Germany, then...UNFORGOTTEN good times!
Maybe one of the most underestimated bands, ever!

I really like this classic song!
Why doesn't You Tube have a 'Like' button for bands such as this. I still listen to this album on Vinyl. Brilliant!!
doent the thumbs up perform that function ?
God dam it ,had mine pinched
Vastly underrated group. I clearly remember every time my band covered this jam we would always be sloppy at the beginning. Not other track like it.
Saw them Support AWB at Edinburgh Odeon in '76 - blew them off the stage.
So right bro, they were a band that worked
Like you , I saw them live supporting AWB at the Glasgow Apollo in May 76 ..... Liked them so much I went out and bought Rise and Shine the following day (on cassette for £2:49 .. lol)
Same in Bristol - everyone wanted Kokomo back on stage

what a tune!!! heard in Constellations, Liverpool UK! :)
Brilliant track. Saw them play live for a reformed show in the mid 80's in a pub in Hackney believe it or not. Amazing stuff.
This was a disco era jam, people thought they were brothers b/c no picture of the group on the album
I saw these back in 75/76 I'm pretty sure it was at the Hammersmith Odeon supporting AWB - anyone else remember this gig?
+Stewart Friendship Saw them in Edinburgh on that tour. AWB were great, but Kokomo were better that gig.
Yes

Yes John I was also there at Hammersmith that night and they were just awesome, I thought at the time AWB have a hard act to follow tonight.
@@philbiddle1899 one verse of Use Your Imagination and I was hooked.

That's what happened to Level 42.
:-(
Imagine being upset that you didn’t have “commercial success” 🙄

Saw this band live at Hull University in 1976 and have got both Kokomo albums. Quite agree with the sentiments - they should have been massive.

You will often find Kokomo still going strong and playing at the half moon pub in Putney London
