Yuzuru was suffering from an ankle injury during the Olympics so honestly he couldn’t have done any better. He stumbled at a few jumps but that only shows that he is a human not a machine. He really fought with all he had.

At 5:09 when you talked about hitting ones head on the ice, back in 2014 he collided with a fellow skater during practice and hit his head on the ice! He cut his chin and scalp and literally was bleeding, everyone was so surprised and scared for him. He insisted in competing, head covered in massive bandage. He fell 5 times while skating but still took home silver!

Here, Yuzuru Hanyu performed this with a recovering injury on his one ankle. If you notice closely, he touches that foot at the end of the performance, gesturing a thank you to his foot for letting him perform. And he chose to retire because physically it's difficult for him to go on anymore perhaps. I have seen him been injured almost a lot and therefore he needs to take rest. And Winnie the Pooh has been his favorite stuff toy since he was a kid, audience throw them as a gesture of honour and love. It's similar to giving gifts to idols during fan signs. Yuzuru donates these received toys to children's ward in hospitals.
As for his performance, he did mess up two spins but he tried his best not to let his hand touch the ground. If you notice above on the left screen there are green squares, green means he has been successful in finishing his spins of jumps, yellow means it's been reviewed and red means it was a failed spin or jump. Yuzuru is being cheered by the whole stadium actually because everyone knows he has worked hard and managed to perform with an injury. He often takes painkillers right before his performance so that he can do well. He is one of the most respected figure skater for his professionalism.

Actually the reason he's not competing is he doesn't want his (hard work) to be evaluated (wasted) by the > Corrupt judges anymore, he said > "Scoring is not needed for my skating, I want to perform for people (fans) who like/appreciate my skating" he's fit & fine (better than ever) and continuing as a pro athlete...
He said the way he was being underscored since 2016 he felt like as they (ISU/JSF) were telling him > "you are not needed plz retire" also they have removed the transitions and music interpretation from the PCS (Yuzuru's specialty) so basically there's nothing much left to do but jumping only...
He now has a YT channel, he shared 2 hours of live practice (with difficult jumps) and recently performed a flawless most difficult program (Rondo) and preparing for ice shows as well, he has no plans to quit skating anytime soon... (lucky us :)

For one program skater get's points for technic (points you see during his skating, green light, yellow when judges aren't sure and have to check one more time, and red light when something didnt go right) plus points for presentation (artistic side of program) those sumed give result. What's more they skate two programs 1. free skating 2. short program - points from this two show who wins. This was his second win at the olimpics

Yuzuru actually got hit once by another player's skating shoes blade during warm-ups and was really badly injured, but he still did his performance even tho he was dizzy and had a sprained ankle, he fell a few times during the routine but the number and complexity of his jumps/turns compensated for it and guess what, he ended up getting a silver, in that state .

Sometimes a skaters score will decrease after points have been awarded due to a jump not being fully rotated, a negative goe(grade of execution,, or maybe a spin being downgraded. Also in figure skating you have a short program and long program. Hanyu had a extremely amazing short program that gave him a massive lead going into the long program. Skaters final scores are the combine points for both programs
