@@gordonhall752 not really. A liaison would be Les amis (the friends) and you pronouce the s with the a and it sounds like a z to make it more fluid. We slur because we speak fast. Like she said C'est ce qu'on dit becomes C'est c'qu'on dit.

There is a lot of French instruction on RUclips, but no one is teaching this real everyday spoken French the way you and Charlie are.

OK, I took French all through Middle School, High School and College and I always did well with reading and writing; however, my conversational French is abysmal! I could never touch Timothee’s French... My wife and I went to Paris for our 30th Anniversary and we could read the signs and menus, but we were somewhat embarrassed to speak it. When we did, we found Parisians grateful that we tried and they were much more helpful and sympathetic to our pathetic French. I would love to live to France and fully immerse myself in the language and the culture!

As a bilingual who grew up in the UK with French-speaking parents, I can confirm that this is pretty much what we sound like! Some Frenglish sneaks in every now and then, there's the slight accent, trouble with masc and fem words and fillers such as "okay" and "alright" are common. His mannerisms are near-identical to mine as well it's nearly creepy! The one thing I can't do that he does well is the quick switch from French to English pronunciation like when he says the name of an American actor mid-sentence. I would stick with the French pronunciation because, otherwise, I would get a headache or I would pause mid-sentence.

What’s the challenge in second language learning after you’ve reached a level of abundant vocabulary is then structure phrases or sentences in a way that native speakers would. Often times I’ll ask myself "how would a native say it?" Because many times we transliterate our thoughts from our native language into our target language and the result comes out sounding incorrect.
But thanks for this video I’ve been looking forward to it!

    • @thedavidguy01

When you are bilingual, it depends on which language has been the last on you heard, how nervous you are etc. If you dont really live steadily in one place, both languages mix, exactly the way it happens here. If he stayed for six month straight in France, he wouldnt be american on certain words, ... and would sound french on certain words back in the States. It depends on which language you are thinkind in, dreaming in at that time...

  • @Rodin99
    @Rodin99 5 лет назад +18

good, a current interview....he's clearly bilingual as you say. And slurring words is perhaps one of the reasons I find watching films or listening to French speakers so challenging. "genre" as" like"...never knew that, je te conseille...thanks, never knew how to say recommend. I think it's fun how you say "way better" in colloquial English because I would never have accepted that in a formal essay.

As far as I know, she didn't grow up speaking French, but learned it in school then moved to Paris to work as an au pair when she was 19, and ended up more or less staying. French is such a difficult language 😄 I remember when visiting Paris in 2018 and we were on the Metro and about to get off in Montparnasse. This one lady asked us where we were going and seemed really nice. As soon as I said Montparnasse in a way I would say it she corrected me. ”You have to say it like this...” 😅
    Anyway, it’s a beautiful language.

ah that's a nice experience :)) yeah about the correcting your pronunciation part, in France we like to help and correct because if we don't and you ask someone else later who might not understand you, you can have some trouble. it's just like when someone has something stuck in their teeth, we always tell the person discreetly because for us it's rude to not say something and help them when we can, you know? :)

Learning english has always been hard for me, because in my schools, we learned the words on the books but never really encouraged to speak it directly.
Since I entered to the university, I got an english teacher which was speaking english with very bad pronounciations, but it was all on purpose. She was doing it to encourage us to speak without being embarassed by the pronounciations. After beating the embarassment, you speak more freely and train it more easely. Don't be embarassed. Also with a bad accent, we can understand you and like your efforts

Merci pour tes analyses elles sont pertinentes. Ça m'a permis de comprendre pas mal de choses. Je suis bilingue mais ma langue maternelle je ne la connais que grâce à mes parents. Je ne l'ai pas étudiée. Ils sont mes seuls référents et quand je vois le vocabulaire qu'utilise cet acteur je me dis qu'il doit sûrement parler français comme il l'a entendu parler par son parent français et (ses cousins, cousines et famille...). Ceci expliquant cela😉

I like your reactions! I took French in college. When I went to France, I could read signs and museum labels very well, and that was fun. Creating sentences was very hard, but especially when I was on my own, I just jumped in, admitted I was not very good, and people were so helpful! Timothee Chalamet's sister lives in Paris and acts in French films. I'd guess that is where he picks up how younger people speak!

parkviewmo Greetings. I am from Toronto, Canada and learned French in elementary and high school. I could always read and write in French but my oral language skills was average. Then I signed up for Rocket Languages in 2012 , similar to Rosetta Stone and I found it very helpful to brush up on my conversational skills. I was in Paris in 2013 and I spoke French half the time. I understood the Parisians and they said my French was good!

It's the same with Tagalog. "Anong oras na?" becomes "Noras na?" or even " Nors na?" We also say words backwards as the French do sometimes. I am learning French so I count in French when working out. 🙂

Insults on French TV are always welcome if nobody abuses of them (otherwise it becomes rude at some point), like, makes people laugh and makes everyone more comfortable, especially the speaker. You can use them strategically to emphasize something you're speaking about or an emotion.

In theory I speak French fluently (like Chalamet’s level) but because I haven’t been living there for three years I can easily see myself making these kind of mistakes. It’s interesting to see you go into such depth.
