My Dad passed away this morning

I was, not as active in my Father's life, we lived on the other side of the country for most of my life. Far from him, and unable to regularly visit.
He didn't have many friends and relied on me and my sisters for company via calls. I wish I'd taken more of those calls.

When I was 8 years old, my older sisters boyfriend taught me this song on piano. He started my true love and interest with music. In 2019 he lost his life in a car crash, now every time I hear this track I can’t help but appreciate how important of a person he was, not only for me, but for many others through his life. Hope he’s doing well up there.

It's funny - this song is written from such a sad perspective, but whenever I listen to it, I hear it from the girl's perspective of starting over somewhere new and finding out what she wants. For me it always feels more empowering than sad.

Great song. But people are misinterpreting it. It does not sum up Boston. It's not about being from Boston and missing it. It's about someone getting out of the life they're used to and going somewhere new, where they can start fresh - no one knows his name, he can be someone new. I myself am feeling kind of the opposite; I'm from Boston and would love to move to California. This song is about anyone wanting to move and make a new life for himself.

I dedicate this to my Mother I lost in 2009. She was from Massachusetts and I miss her everyday.
So I actually did this a few years ago -- just up and moved thousands of miles away one day with very little planning or forethought, bringing nothing with me except a suitcase full of clothes. It actually is cool to have a reset and become a new person and get rid of all the baggage you had where you came from. You can't completely run away from your past, but overall, I would recommend it.

What a subtle and observant comeback to an equally great initial observation on sunsets and sunrises! I’ve never thought about that! In both cases! And you’re right! Florida has both a west coast and an east coast.
And now that you make me think about it the same thing is true of the Cape in Massachusetts, and probably a few other places.
His experience may not have been as profound, sentimental, and touching but at least moving expenses would’ve been a lot cheaper for Augustana had he lived in Florida, or some other land where the sun both sets and rises over the ocean or oceans on both its coasts. Lol!

Actually that’s not what it means at all. It means he or the implied person is tired of heartbreak and bad times in life hence a “sun set which leads to darkness”, and life filled with darkness. They want more “sun rises’s” which is a metaphor for light in your life equating to happiness and and purpose. It’s actually way deeper than you originally thought.

Damn ! As a 90's kid , i grew up on a song like this. Train , Snow patrol , Lifehouse , U2 , Coldplay , Hoobstak , Five for fighting , Keane...I want to go back. LIfe was tough , but music like this made life livable. Even Hip-hop and R&B were very decent back then...now...ughh

i suppose there are times that we all want to run away from the present moment of life. i have contemplated moving to boston from california twice. of course from a broken heart, from disappointment or something -- maybe that sunrise would be inspiring. maybe no one knowing me would be interesting. not really sure. but i'm very sure that we all walk our individual story alone...... thanks Augustana.... very cool song that helps the heart.
