Still to this day dont know how that happened. 48 totally got screwed. One of thr most bizarre events in nascar's history. They never really explained it well.
Air bubble in the power steering and low air pressure in the tires locked his steering for a few seconds. Would have happened a few laps later it could have killed him and wiped out half the field being he started 2nd. Even though Mark was a small guy he was and still is a health nut and worked out back when most nascar folks were smoking and beer drinking. He said he was yanking on the wheel and it just wouldn't turn. Imagine having to go out and do 500 miles in a car that just did that.
This is just the wierdest thing I ever saw happen. Jimmie was a rookie then but I don't quite get how you collide on the pacelaps. Something I'll never figure.
Why In World That Would Happen In The Pace Laps Because Of A Steering Of Mark Martin? That Happens When I Was 9 Years Old When I Was In The 4th Grade In The Fall Of 2002.
I'd say JJ got the worst of this...not to mention that this race ended up running caution free. This race bascially handed the championship to Tony Stewart, as well.
Well, of course. Any race like that is terrible, although of course there may be action elsewhere in the field (as there probably was here-I don't think I watched the race)
No shit...but Mark and Jimmie were well ahead in the points going into this race, and because of this incident, they finished waaaaaay back, while Tony finished well and overtook the championship lead.
Wasn't this the race where like all 5 Hendrick motors blew up? I believe that was the only time all 5 were wiped out, I just dont remember which fall Dega race it was.
Neither one of them should have been allowed on pit road. NASCAR has that rule in place and they enforced it, no matter who the driver is...not even the "almighty" Jimmie Johnson. For that I applaud them. The same people complaining about "they should have bent the rules" are the same people who complain about NASCAR's rules not being 100 percent solid.
yea i agree, and i wouldn't say that it was the smaller fuel cell that made this race caution free, it was probobly just pure luck, because it has not happened since.
Its funny how Jimmie and Mark are 1 and 2 in the points standings right now.
RIP Benny Parsons
Hey look- 48 likes, 6 dislikes!
2002 was probably Mark Martin's best chance to win the championship. But this race probably cost it for him.
Got that right
This day won Tony Stewart the 2002 championship.
i was happy when his engine blew and what made it way more better was jr won this race

yeah and the fact that this was a caution free race made it even stranger
That probably cost Mark Martin the championship right there.
Johnson blew an engine that day.
I suspect it was one of Martin's crew guys as they realized they were going to lose a lap.

First rule: Always make sure the steering wheel is secure.
Maybe I should rephrase my statement-caution free races are terrible when there's one leader for most of the race with little passing.
Yes, it was this one.
Mark's steering locked up

1997 Winston 500, run two weeks after its sceduled date.
I'd say JJ got the worst of this...not to mention that this race ended up running caution free. This race bascially handed the championship to Tony Stewart, as well.
IMO what cost Mark the championship
Stacy Compton- swept the Dega poles in 2001, started 41st here.
Yes, it was.
Im surprise this the only incident of the race
The damage for the #48 was the least of HMS's problems THAT day.
kwamezuv1984
I'll agree to that statement
Jr still in 2001 in ghe Ea sports 500
with all the wrecks
lol I remember watching this like "wtf?"
Well, of course. Any race like that is terrible, although of course there may be action elsewhere in the field (as there probably was here-I don't think I watched the race)
Yeah Jeff almost did in the 1999 Daytona 500 watch the last 11 laps
No shit...but Mark and Jimmie were well ahead in the points going into this race, and because of this incident, they finished waaaaaay back, while Tony finished well and overtook the championship lead.
see also denny hamlin's qualifying run...same deal
Wasn't this the race where like all 5 Hendrick motors blew up? I believe that was the only time all 5 were wiped out, I just dont remember which fall Dega race it was.
this race, 2001 spring race, what was the third caution free race?
That was a classic Race
And Jr won a million dollars

So sad too bad for Jimmie that day, 😆
Well if Sterling Marlin hadn't have had that horrific wreck at Kansas that year, he would have won the championship
this race cost mark martin the championship because of what happen during the pace laps when he hit johnson.

was this race caution free??
Somewhat odd that the only crash was before the start of the race... >_>
you spoke to soon lol
nascar just told the drivers the other day to be more aggressive
this year i think will be the best of the cot's
yea this was it all 5 of them blew and apparently the hendrick guys knew after the first 1 blew tht the otha 5 would go 2
no because if they did that people would be passing under the yellow line and everything like that
was this the race that ran caution free?
Steve Park? Is that you?
yea i remember watching this........yea Jimmie should of been able to come in with no penalty.
ooo ok i didnt kno.....n i think thats the 2nd dumbest rule the 1st one is that u cant race back to the caution!
Out of the 3 caution-free races run at Talladega. This was the most-boring of them.
Disliked, because This tape is Damaged
