Doe Maar was the biggest band in Dutch music history. It was a Dutch language Reggae/Ska band with often pretty serious or controversial lyrics on things like drugs, also the bad, promiscuity, nuclear war, among songs about love and girls. But despite already being in their thirties the singer/bass player (not the one who sings this song) and the singer/keyboard player had a boyband appeal. A Beatlemania emerged, the girl fanbase went from 18 to 16 to 13 and then the younger sisters, while the guys became less openly fan. So they ended up playing for thousands of girls in some improvised venues like cattle auction halls who were all screaming the lyrics they were far too young for to really understand word for word, except all those 11-year olds who fainted, and then often got attented to by the band members afterwards. Counterproductive probably, but they were just genuinely nice guys. They were in steady relationships with women of their own age and then some 12-year old girl would be out in the rain in front of their window at night and they would drive them home. There are hundreds of thousands Dutch women who once had a crush on one of those two band members, and most of female audience in this video probably had. So it got a bit uncomfortable, they were just too good a band and too old to be a boyband. They quit, the absolute headline of all the media that day, and probably to the relief of many parents. It seems a sad story, a band killed by their own fans, but these girls are my generation and I look a bit different at it. I've known them in their twenties and they all stil knew a good bass line and a proper reggae drummer when they hear one. Those girls had the privilege of having the crush on boyband experience with good music and good lyrics, not the slick, commercial nothingness that usually exploits teenage girl's hormones.
Very true, they were/are quality. You still see the members pop up in all kinds of other projects. Other bands have tried covering their songs and say it's really hard to copy them technically as it's quite intricate but they make it look easy.

So in 1978 when Janzs got Doe Maar together it was almost certain that Belinfante would get involved too. But not just yet, it took the departure of original bass player Piet Dekker before Belinfante made his way in. Belinfante being a multi instrumentalist (If you look at the full show, you will see him play Trombone, Violin and guitar) bought himself a Bass and fit right in. So when Henny Vrienten came around to join the band as bass player Belinfante stayed around, played on the all of the band's albums and usually did lead vocals on a couple of tunes, of which "Nederwiet" was the biggest hit. But it was Vrienten's involvement which gave the song it's hit potential, because when the band was in the studio recording the Album "skunk" where Vrienten redid all the bass lines Belinfante played and went "Is this something good?" before playing that bass line which made the song legendary.

Doe Maar was famous for this kind of music. Ska music. One of the main singers, Henny Vrienten, passed away last year. This group originated from my city, Tilburg. So proud of that. My mom was a headnurse in the 80s when the father of this singer was in the hospital, mom had to make sure he got the proper care, he was terminally ill, and this band was so popular back then that girls tried to get to the floor in the hospital where his father was just to hope to run into Henny Vrienten. The hospital tried everything to keep the fans outside. It was very frustrating. We in our family knew way before the mainstream media news knew how bad and tenacious the hardcore fans were. Those fans kinda ruined it for the band and all the other normal fans of the band. They made fantastic music. They split up begin of the 80s, but got back together in 2000. My brothers and I and our significant others went to a concert of them.back then....so fantastic. Nostalgia galore 😊❤

I was 14 yaers old when this band "doe Maar" the country totally blew everybody away when I left basic school after 6 years we playback this, and as with every concert the girls fainted before our eyes,,, it was beautiful. I bet you, that every person in the Netherlands can sing a long this song..
Shout-out and a like from the Netherlands. I was in my rebellious teens when this song was released and needless to say these guys were my heroes. Unfortunately today in the news I saw that Henny Vrienten (the guy playing the bass and lead singer of most their songs) has died at the age of 73. R.I.P. my hero, I will smoke one (or two) in your memory today as I listen to all those great old songs.

Doe Maar brought SKA to the Netherlands 🇳🇱 A great ‘boy band’ from the eighties in NL. Set out to be a band playing the alternative side and small music halls but became a massive hit for all. Great lyrics, fun music … I guess all people under 40 in the era still know all the lyrics. From protest songs to little sweet songs till plain controversial songs. All sang by teenagers like they were lullabies :-))) (To big frustration of some band-members)
Great to see you genuinely enjoy =) Doe Maar is awesome really. There are many good songs they made. Its quite a contrast that the man in the blacksuit that does the "background vocal" also made music for Sesamestreet (among other things. I think he is an absolute legend)

This video is from one of the revivals.
Golden Earring also was big band that had some international succes but I agree doe maar definitely in the top 5
When I was a teen I had many albums of Doe maar when they were younger of course hahah
this is between reggae and ska I think maybe more ska.
edit: this song was made before we developed seedless weed by the way :P
I grew the first skunk(seedless) in 1987 it was a revolution back in the day.
I was 14 yaers old when this band "doe Maar" the country totally blew everybody away when I left basic school after 6 years we playback this, and as with every concert the girls fainted before our eyes,,, it was beautiful. I bet you, that every person in the Netherlands can sing a long this song..
Yes! Was a big fan of DoeMaar in my teens. the main singers of DoeMaar were the two man doing the background now.
As a ducth guy.... I am so happy to see you react to this. R.I.P Henny Vrienten
Henny Vrienten the bassplayer leadsinger is an angel in heaven now. R.I.P. 😥 he was my idol when i was a teenager..he still be missed ❤🙏
I was at this concert. Epic! I love "doe maar" so much. Just found you on RUclips. Your comments are the best.
Wow, thank you!
Its funny to see a outsider laugh and enjoy about this song. This is one of the best dutch songs ever but not very famous.
Bedankt dat je dit nummer heb vertegenwoordigd. Het was super leuk om dit te zien!
Great to see someones first reaction to "Nederweed", especially as we dutchmen know the song all our lives. (song came out in 1980)
I enjoy your videos. Just enjoy watching you smile. So fun to watch you are still getting surprised by some videos.
The band is the wonderful eighties-band Doe Maar, in cooperation with the singer (bearded guy) Joost Belifante!
Always listen to Doe Maar in the Summertime for the perfect vibe! 🌞🥰✌🏼
Watch the windmill in the back at the end of the song !!!!!!!!!!! That's what we dutchies are calling humor

Doe Maar brought SKA to the Netherlands 🇳🇱
A great ‘boy band’ from the eighties in NL. Set out to be a band playing the alternative side and small music halls but became a massive hit for all.
Great lyrics, fun music … I guess all people under 40 in the era still know all the lyrics. From protest songs to little sweet songs till plain controversial songs. All sang by teenagers like they were lullabies :-)))
(To big frustration of some band-members)
First time i went to see Doe Maar live...was at Pink Pop.Think it was 1988.
Great concert!
This sums up The Netherlands, a full stadium going mad on a song that teach you how to grow weed! Proud to be Dutch (L)
Great to see you genuinely enjoy =) Doe Maar is awesome really. There are many good songs they made. Its quite a contrast that the man in the blacksuit that does the "background vocal" also made music for Sesamestreet (among other things. I think he is an absolute legend)
"just the tip"hylarious :-)
Lordy Lordy... I love love love that you did this reaction, epic evergreen of the Netherlands LMFAO... so very very good. Thanks Mate! Enjoyed this one!
my dad was friends with doe maar from his school... and the golden earing used to practice at my great grandmas home when they just started. once filmed by my dad and clipped in a 00's docu about them.
Doe maar was bigger than the Beatles in the Netherlands in the 80's. And Doe Maar always makes Reggae/ska. Normally it's the bass player that sings. This is a guest singer.
This is Joost Belinfante. He wrote the song and recorded it with the band for Skunk. Not just a guest singer. Great to see him perform.
A home grown band is bigger than a foreign band . Imagine my shock
these plants certainly make your home a lot cozier. and I think it still smells good. I was 12 years old when it came out Doe maar.
Dit is een lied over een plant, een mooie plant, een nuttige plant!!!!
The bearded man is joost belifante,he was member of a band before doe maar but after doe maar was created he always was/ is a part of them.. thanks for this video man..ok i'm gonna listen my joint greetings from holland brother (he realy is a creativ dude!!)
Yes i am out too, crank up the old bike and go see the dealer.
Geweldig ! Groeten uit Zeeland (The Netherlands) , Robin
Saw them live when they weren't famous back then. Yep, in the culture center of my town. Saw Golden Earring there too.
It's exactly that: a weed-poem mixed with a song! 😎🪴 Love this performance!!
Funny thing.. Cannabis is also grown by farmers ( the variant with very low THC Content), but.. you should see the look on tourist's faces when encounter a field full of these plants.. a lot of them stop, and take pictures of themselves in these fields.. that probably makes the best souvenir!.. 😅
Such good vibes 😎 Love it!!!
Have you seen the size of the crowd?!
Wauw, so many people there!
Geweldig dit!!!
