Restoration of a 1958 Citroen ID 19 P: blocked engine and cracked piston

  • Опубликовано: 3 май 2017
  • This restoration is more technical than any other I have published here before.
    The bodywork was in a rather good shape but the engine was blocked and a piston cracked.
    Nothing that a lot of time and dedication can't fix.

    Its nice to see someone that will take the time to repair old cars, rather than to junk them just for the few dollars that they were worth not in running condition.
    With good care this lovely old car can be around for another 30 years.

    I absolutely love these cars. My ideal car would be one of these, completely restored to original showroom condition. Forget the Italian sports cars, this is pure class!

    Great video and I wish more people would restore these cars -- one point in the video at 4.40 it say “LHM “ tank , this is a 1958 Id 19 and they used LHS liquid till 1967. Easy to spot because the old tanks were black for LHS and liquid colour red and new tanks and liquid were green. LHS was troublesome and vegetable based on castor oil and absorbed water where as LHM was mineral based and much better. So I notice near the end of the video the hydraulic tank is now green and they are talking LHM , so somewhere they have missed out that that they changed the system over to the new oil LHM which means changing all the seals and anything rubber to mineral oil compatible rubber type seals and pipes

    Dad served as an officer in the Free French Navy in WWII and settled and married in Scotland just after the war...he only could afford cheap second hand Brit cars till 1959 and the 1958 DS was the first new car he bought followed by the DS station wagon in 1964 as the family expanded by then....he passed away in 2010 and Citroen was the only car make he drove in 51 years.

    Back in the 60s I owned 2 IDs, a DSM21 and a DS19 Citromatic. One ID was converted with DS19 high compression pistons, and the other ID got a quickie cylinder honing and ring replacement by just removing the head and pulling the sleeves. Have read all the comments and seen the slide show - well done!
    Except for the fluid, you do not mention anything about restoring the suspension, I would have thought that the height correcting valves would need cleaning, as well as the circuits. Also imagine that the suspension spheres were no longer functional. As for the brakes my 1960 ID had a suspension pressure line connected to the master cylinder, which would apply the brakes in the event of MS failure (pedal going to the floor).

    Thank you for posting a wonderful video.
    Gives me goose bumps seeing this marvel of engineering brought back to life.
    I own BMW's out of necessity for daily commute reliability in the rust belt. And it annoys me how people fawn over BMW's as a marvel of (fill in the blanks). They are crude compared to the engineering embodied through out the D's. Citroen style and how things work is an acquired taste and learning curve. Even for me for a short while I thought a 1966 Pontiac was "better". I love the Citroen's style now because it is so much more than a "look" and includes such things as incredible aerodynamic features. Citroen D's are light years before marketing made aerodynamics, radial tires, quartz iodine active headlights, rack and pinion, no torque steer front wheel drive, power disc brakes, unibody, paddle shifters and active suspension etc. trendy.
    Once you experience a properly running Citroen D there is no going back. ALL cars are ordinary after that. And yes Rolls Royce / Bentley (pre German) uses Citroen hydraulics in their cars.
    (Note, Germans are idiots when it comes to hydraulic anything. Unreliable, expensive, complicated and leaks from day one. )

      Thank you for your point of view. I second it pretty much all the way. Citroen was a very good brand (pre PSA in my opinion though). Now it is pretty much making plastic boxes with wheels like all the others.

      What the video doesn't show is how long the restoration took. Yes it takes money to restore a car like that but it was done over a period of several years. For most of the people whose work I am showing here, restoring cars is a hobby so there is no time pressure associated to it.

    great work, only wish we could see some video of it running, possibly something to add another day? The paintwork is very good, but people forget that Citroën was not a cheap car, certainly not in England in those days, only since the 1990's here have the been sold as cheap cars below their Peugeot sisters, though efforts to change that are taking place.

      Tom Pinion most of the cars are French (actually all are) and they are inspected via the equivalent of the MOT in France. I just translated to the equivalent word in English which is MOT. Thanks for following my videos.

      No problem, I enjoy them very much. Here where I live in the state of Virginia (USA) we don't have to get our classic cars inspected if we put antique plates on them. The only bad part is the yearly mileage is restricted (which nobody actually checks anyway so It's not really an issue).

    Lhm?

    • @OldTimerGarage
      @OldTimerGarage  7 лет назад

      LHM is the hydraulic fluid used for these cars. It powers pretty much everything from the suspension obviously to the power steering to the brake assistance.

    • @zagyex
      @zagyex 7 лет назад +2

      I know, I own one. But the early models didnt use LHM but LHV then LHS. Can you still use lhm or is the system retrofitted

    • @OldTimerGarage
      @OldTimerGarage  7 лет назад +1

      You can use LHM if you change the components to be able to stand LHM otherwise the rubber gets destroyed so in this case, the system was retrofitted.

    I believe this is a DS19, not an ID19.
    ID19 has conventional spring suspension, this car has hydro pneumatic suspension, power steering & hydraulic power breaks, that makes it a DS.
    Some trivia: Michelin tire company developed their trademark Michelin-X cross ply tires especially to order from Citroen for the new DS. The cross ply reinforcement technology gave the tires lateral stability when cornering yet remain supple for a soft & safe ride. Because of the DS we all drive on modern cross ply tires.

    • @linuxjon
      @linuxjon 7 лет назад +1

      All ID's have the identical hydro-pneumatic suspension. You are correct, ID's have manual transmission, non-assisted rack and pinion and a "conventional" brake pedal pushing on a simpler hydraulic master cylinder (but still more advanced than anything on the planet). However my 1966 DS21 Pallas has the "optional" manual transmission. ( I own 6 D's [+ an SM], and have the shop manuals and factory parts books for reference.)

    • @ajaxa9
      @ajaxa9 5 лет назад

      I restored the very same car. Conventional springs were not involved. Definitely hydraulic suspension, but no other power assists. Mine was mechanically great but a rust bucket; same orange interior; no auxiliary lights. $200 to purchase; $1200 to restore in 1963.

  • @Aleks_Z

    Engine and gearbox are swapped fom newer model. Valve cover is different, as well as gearbox, meaning, the engine and gearbox are from later models. Also, LHM instead of LHS. And I can't really just let it go, but it appears that the front end is changed as well. The car on 7:13 isn't the same car as the car in the beginning of the video. Bumpers are different, auxiliary headlights are different... Something is wrong in this video. There are two different cars at the beginning and at the end of video.

    • @OldTimerGarage
      @OldTimerGarage  7 лет назад

      Nope, I have seen the car myself at the beginning, during and at the end of the restoration so I can assure you it is the same car.
      On these models, the hydraulic liquid was the red one not the green one which came later on.
      The bumper has been changed though so well spotted here.

    • @Aleks_Z
      @Aleks_Z 7 лет назад

      I know it's red, or should i say, it is supposed to be red, but given the hydraulic components are all green, it suggests that current liquid is LHM.
      Auxiliary headlights as well. Engine definitely isn't original, or same. The original has separation between 2nd and 3rd cylinder, oil cap is at an angle toward left side of the car, not vertical. Older gearbox doesn't have such mesh on cover, since it's quite similar to the gearbox of Traction Avant, same goes for the engine.
      I've worked on DSs and Tractions so i do know difference.
      Where are door trims? Where is red dot on top of front quarter panel?
      These are either two different cars, or the original 1958 car was totally upgraded to 1966/7 model. Probably 1966, since the battery is on the right of the car.
