thank you so much for what you do. Your videos are great. They’re not good, not OK - they’re great. I can’t believe that you only have 6K subscribers. People should really watch your videos and subscribe, because you are nailing it. Thank you.
I’ve never post a comment on any RUclips vidéo before (and i have watched a lot of them)! But you really did a Nice job here explaining everything to know with humour! Thank you very much, you have a new subscriber from France!
I have to say this. As a uad x series apollo interface user. I have been extremely happy with my interfaces. The real time dsp is great the quality of the build is amazing, and the sound quality has been great, That and getting all the native versions added to my account for plugins I've already bought the dsp version of has really just added more longevity to my purchases.
@TheRecordist I have to Try that mic ove hear great things, And yes I sort of felt like owning a uad interface well 3 in my case was a double edged sword but now with all the native spark plugind coming out the fact that I have a perpetual license for almost every single one of the plugins just for something I already bought is amazing.
getting mine tomorrow! the console is gonna take some work, but your video showed me a lot already! also there is a promo happening right now, you‘ll get some more plugins with it than usually!
@@nitromeda it kinda „worked“ just not as much possibilities than with the I/O matrix on the thunderbolt versions. but overall it works good, but I swaped to only using „UADx“ plugins, because the DSP round trip to the interface and back takes about 50-250ms per plugin, but the AD/DA quality… 😮 just amazing sound!!!
I received an Apollo Twin this week - and it really is a fine piece of gear. Coming from years using a Mackie analog mixer into Logic Pro (via USB), this is night and day different. I hope to fall in love with it - but it is not a plug and go interface - as it really does want to be the center of your studio universe. I wasn’t expecting that. Thanks for this excellent video.
I did just purchase this and it's arriving tomorrow 😁 although I don't believe you get all those preamp plugins that were demonstrated. Great video and I hit that sub! Cheers
Hey that’s great! Congrats! It doesn’t ship with ANY plugins? Are you sure? They usually get you started with some. When you get it all set up, come back and let me know! And thanks for the sub!
What a great video; informative and entertaining. I happen to have the interface, but have yet to use the plugins, Console, or anything else on it and still use it as a no-frills audio interface. This is perhaps the most clarifying video so far that I've seen yet that helps for me to know if I should keep it and dive in further, or toss it. I have an M1 Max MacBook Pro, and with it being able to handle lower latency with audio, I wondered if the UAD gear still matters. I'm now convinced, so thank you for that! Look forward to your LUNA overview, yet another piece of UAD software I yet to use, since I use Logic Pro. For Mac.
Oh thanks so much! Indeed, you have much to experience! Man, I’ll tell you, I just love my Apollo. I didn’t even know at the time of my purchase what it could do as far as Unison preamps. It changes everything. I dove so far into UAD that I ended up buying many UAD plugins and also the Sphere mic just a week ago. That’s an entire OTHER adventure. I’m developing a series of short videos that looks deeper into each Unison preamp model and should help people decide which one they should get-if any. Stay tuned for those. As far as Luna. It’s the best sounding DAW I’ve ever used. However, it’s still in its infancy and it has a ways to go to catch up to Logic Pro or Studio One. The MIDI capabilities are few and there are no stock plugins. It’s great for mixing and mastering for that analog feel, though. Because it does that very well. I’m actually thinking of switching from Studio One to Logic due to some integrations that it has that I need. I’m very close. I’ll always use Luna when I don’t need fancy tools, or for mixing a song, but it’s not where I need it to be yet to fully switch. Thanks for watching!
@@TheRecordist So now I'm returning to this awesome video because I needed to get more serious about those buttons! Also, I'm enrolled in an audio engineering certification program at the local community college, so it's gotten a bit more real and I have also upgraded some equipment at home....but still believe in the potential of the Twin X. On my wish list as far as request for future videos: the basics of using Console, and the basics of using LUNA, especially with the latter getting updated so much that I've lost track! Thanks again; will be watching this video again.
Oh really? It’s that bad? Why do you think it kills your tone? I find that one can pretty much make anything work - unless it’s really really bad or defective or has some sort of inherent unfixable problem. That said, I’ve quite enjoyed my Apollo. It does everything I need and I really enjoy the preamp emulations. Thanks for the kind words!
Oh yes. Those natives are nice! The Apollo has a few amazing plugins that aren’t yet in native such as C-Suite, Capitol Chambers, AMS Neve DFC, Ocean Way Studios, Distressor, and more. No plugins can match those, IMO. Apollos are fantastic!
thank you so much for this Knowledge. I just bought the Apollo Twin X Quad for my PC as it was on sale for $1300 with Aorus Master x570 motherboard ,Ryzen 3900X proc, fingers crossed I had to purchased a used thunderbolt 3 for my motherboard so I have not set up yet, still waiting on that to come in because they are not made anymore and I can't use the Thunderbolt 4 as intel only. Its risky I know lol and I plan to use it the Reaper DAW. Risk it for the biscuit I guess. but if it works wow, It will be worth it.
I guess they’ve improved some things for the PC but I bought a Mac because I could not wait to get an Apollo so now I have the Apollo for the Mac and the solo for the PC fortunately, I haven’t had a problem with either. Maybe it depends on how powerful your PC is, but I still prefer to do my work on the Mac. Maybe it’s a mental thing but to me it seems to sound better on the Mac or maybe because it’s an Apollo twin X.
Loved the video! You’re quite the character lol Loved the jokes. I am not planning on using the uad pluings that much maybe not at all. Is it still worth getting it just for recording the vocals and other instruments since it is one of the best for that I think..
Haha. Well thank you very much! I think getting into the UA Ecosystem is a great thing-even without the plugins. But they come with several for free and that’s what gets you. It’s the preamp plugins that you load in that make everything sparkle. You’ll get a few for free if you buy one. Now, it can be said that the Apollos aren’t the very best interfaces as far as just the raw preamps in there go. Maybe second best. The RME line has some arguably excellent preamps but it has its own pros and cons. I think if it was me, I’d go Apollo, but try for a X series as the converters are much better. Hope this helps!
Hello. Hopefully it is not a dumb question. The Unison Preamps are coming with the hardware or they should be bought separately? I am thinking of buying a twin X and I would like to know what to expect. Thanks!
Hi there. That’s not a dumb question at all! Only a few unison preamp plugins come with the unit. Which ones they are is up to the package you purchase. They differ. The best thing to do is inquire where you’d be purchasing the Twin X. When I bought mine, it came with the UA 610B, the Helios, and the Century Tube channel strip.
Hello, thanks for the video. Does the Level Knob clicks down when you press down on it ? muteing the sound like in the older apollo twins? or is just a regular potentiometer?
Hi Luis. Thanks! Great question! But no. It does not click down like the older ones. It’s just a regular potentiometer. I wondered the same thing when I got it. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this great review! Would you recommend this interface for mixing / mastering purposes? I'm wondering to which extent its DAC and headphone amp are as good as its preamps emulations and worth considering for that use.
Hey there! Thanks very much! Well, the Apollo doesn’t have the world’s best converters, but they’re not the worst. And I’ve heard so many shootouts between the X series and, say, the Burl systems. You’d be hard pressed to tell the difference. Still, if you’re looking for the best, Burl makes great rack units, same with Crane Song, etc. The preamp emulations on the Apollo units are fantastic, however, they require a lot of DSP. So for mixing, you’d quickly run out of DSP without investing in a few satellite units. I don’t know if it’s worth it for that. Every instance of a UAD2 plugin requires more DSP (digital signal processing) that is found inside the unit itself. So if you have 30 tracks and you attempt to put, say, a Neve 1073 on each track, it’ll quickly gobble up your resources in your Twin. So the Apollo Twin X units are best for tracking - using the internal DSP for emulations and FX on the way in. You can put a preamp emulation on there, as well as compressors, and all sorts of other plugins to process in real-time on the way in. However, mixing and mastering in Luna is amazing. Luna (which up until very recently was only available if you have an Apollo) is a Universal Audio DAW that’s seriously impressive for mixing. With the optional built in Neve and API summing, and built in API channel strips (all using your own computer’s resources), are fantastic. It’s Mac only though. You can get Luna to test out without a Mac. It’s free for the basic version and I think with the API console and API summing pro version is $199. With an Apollo, you can also get Neve Summing built in. And with the UA Spark subscription, you can get native versions of many of their top emulations and other plugins. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the informative video ❤ I am going to purchase this and connect a antelope audio interface via adat. Can I apply all these wonderful fx to the adat channels also I hope. Thanking you!
Hey. No problem! Yes, you can definitely use the UAD plugins on channels recorded through the Antelope, however, you cannot use them live on the way in as unison or record-FX. So you’d have to use them on tracks already recorded. For unison on the way in, you’d need to use the Apollo. Hope this helps! Cheers!
@@TheRecordistsorry I may have explained it wrong but I'm going to route from the Antelope into the Apollo via adat, can I apply the UA fx to these new audio channels in apollo mixing software? 😊
Thumbs up to you! Took your advice and bought an Apollo Twin MK11 now having problems downloading the software UAD no longer give phone support.. would you be able to help me to download the software using team viewer for a fee? Thank you.
I am on a PC and zero problems using it as a interface the only th8ng it has issues with is when I do livestreams for clients. It always works best if I send audio out of the apollo into a capture device other than that flawless. On a Mac you don't get that issue.
Very informative video! Thanks. I am definitely going to be getting one of these units this year. Isn’t there some sort of special rebate offer during Black Friday or Christmas every year? I am currently buying a very expensive Gibson guitar right now. So, it would probably be financially smarter for me to pick this up when this holiday voucher is being offered.
Hey thanks! It’s a great unit! Yes. Sometimes there are great deals but no one ever knows when they’ll be. Christmas time is the annual plugin sale, but not sure about hardware.
Hi! I am going to purchase this unit tomorrow. I currently have a USB-C port on my Mac book pro with the Big Sur operating system. I am a bit confused on the exact cable I will need. Please help
@@blissfulhumanoid9536 hey. If you’re interested in the Thunderbolt 3 Twin X like I have shown here, you must have a Thunderbolt 3 port in your computer. It resembles a USB-C port but it is not. You will also need a Thunderbolt 3 cable. This is not included. But usually dealers with throw a cable in with the purchase of a Twin X. So just to be clear, if you do not have a Thunderbolt 3 port, it will not work. If you don’t have a Thunderbolt 3 port, then you must go for a Twin MkII with a usb connection. I hope this helps!
Thanks a lot! I have a Mac Book Pro 2019 Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports, 2.4 GHz Quad Core intel Core i5. Memory: 16GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3. What is the exact cable I should be buying?
Hey thanks! Well, there’s only one 1/4 inch headphone output, however, there are two sets of line level outputs (monitor LR one and monitor LR two). You could either output from the headphone out and into a headphone amp or you could output from the monitor 2 out to a headphone amp and do it that way. There are options, but all require an extra expense. Hope that helps!
"The older one gets, the more Pringles chips sucks...truth! I own a second hand Apollo Twin which I've owned for almost a year and a windows user, I'm experiencing mixed results with this set up. Probaly alot of my problems are with my lack of knowledge with this equipment and utilizing Console 🤔correctly. Im using a Dell XPS 8930 with a Thunderbolt 3 card, and that does work well.
Haha. Hey man. Can’t find good Pringles anywhere these days! As for your Apollo/Windows issue, I hear so many Windows users having issues with their Apollos. There ARE ways to help iron all that out but I don’t know them. I’m a Mac user and have been for more than 12 years. Here’s what I recommend you do. Start a support ticket with Universal Audio. It’ll take many days to hear a response. But they WILL respond. In the meantime, if you’re on Facebook, try joining the UAD Apollo Users group and using the search function to find the plethora of Windows users with similar problems. You might be able to find some solutions there while you wait for UA. You might also try www.uadforum.com for answers. You can also ask for help in those forums too. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help!
Thanks for your help, I appreciate it, my one big issue is acessing my plugins, UA Connectis is always doing the oppisite, disconnecting, forcing me to uninstall/ install...alot.@@TheRecordist
Despite what UA claims, the original thunderbolt Apollo MKII is not really "Windows compatible." It will only record in ASIO apps -- making it useless for any application that isn't a DAW. I went through the exact same problem as you and I would recommend getting a different interface if you're only working on Windows. Get an RME or MOTU and never look back. Also, don't bother with that useless UA "support" forum. They will just pretend these issues aren't widely known in some vain attempt to delay you refunding the product, or they'll just outright gaslight you for wanting your $1k interface that was advertised work on Windows _to actually work on Windows._ 😂 Moral of the story, don't use UA stuff if you're not on a mac.
I just bought the apollo with the DLX sphere on the side and I wonder if you ever came to make that review of the DLX? Thank you for always making good, informative and yet funny videoes for us dummies out there, just trying to figure everything out everything in this damn jungle of gear.
Hey there! Thanks so much! Yes I did make a DLX review. You can watch it here: ruclips.net/video/NkopJXvd2Bc/видео.htmlsi=RtlhYUnqW9hMKQp- Thanks for the wonderful comment!
Hi! Hope you're doing well! I would like to ask a question. I built a PC and the motherboard has a thunderbolt port. Will this audio interface work with windows?
Hi there. In theory it should work but I would ask Universal Audio that question directly. Or go to the UAD group on Facebook or the UAD forum: uadforum.com/community/index.php Better to be safe than sorry.
I would basically want to apply the Apollo plug-ins to previously recorded tracks during mixing, not using the Apollo for input. Is this devise going to do it for me?
Hey. Well that depends. If you require the DSP versions of UAD plugins (as opposed to the native versions), then you will need more DSP chips in the Apollo. This can be achieved either by purchasing a separate satellite device that adds more processing, or by purchasing an Apollo with more chips like a quad or x6 or something. But honestly, these days, computers are much more powerful and can handle many native plugin instances. UAD has the Spark subscription, which gives you many of their greatest hits in native format. In that case, you can run as many plugins as your computer will handle. If only wanting to run DSP processing inside the Apollo, you will not be able to get many plugins working simultaneously in the Apollo Twin Duo. Example: maybe 8 instances of Neve 1073. Or two instances of Capitol Chambers, etc. Here’s a DSP requirement chart: help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/articles/215262223-UAD-2-DSP-Chart Hope this helps!
I'm working at building a vocal stack for voice over in Apple Logic Pro X. What plugins and UA gear do you suggest? Plan is to focus on Cinematic Audio for movie trailers, promos. I'm looking at theUniversal Audio Apollo Twin X Duo Heritage Edition MAC.- Please give me your thoughts. My computer is a IMAC 2021 Intel machine, with 40gig Ram.
Hi Gary. Yes indeed. I can give you exactly what I recommend. First off, your system is great, you’re in Logic (I work a lot in Logic too), and you’ve got enough ram by miles. Here are my VO recommendations: UAD PLUGINS: 1. Neve 88RS Channel Strip or: 2. SSL Channel Strip 3. AMS Neve DFC Channel Strip 4. C-Suite C-Vox (noise suppression) 5. Teletronix LA2A Silver 6. LA3A Limiter FAB FILTER PLUGINS: 1. Pro-Q 3 EQ 2. Pro-L Limiter OEKSOUND PLUGINS: 1. Soothe2 (resonance suppressor) With these, you can do anything. Which mic(s) do you use?
For this setup, I purchased a Sennheiser MKH416 (ready to purchase a second one) and right now it's running through my Rodecaster Pro2. Preamps are solid and I believe with the UA Twin X, this will be a killer setup. SO please share with me, what will the price be for all of the plugins you listed above for me? Do any of them come with the unit when I purchase? @@TheRecordist
@@garyclement2888 I’m so sorry. I didn’t get notified of this reply and just now saw it when another person commented. The LA2A and LA3A usually come with the Apollo. Wait for sales for the rest, but if not, the rest are a couple of hundred dollars each at full price. The most expensive will be Soothe2. It rarely goes on sale. The UAD stuff gets stupid cheap during all kinds of holidays and promotions. You can end up getting all those mentioned here for less than $200 for all of them.

Hey thanks so much! I really appreciate the kind words and the sub! Well, I have zero experience with the Apollo with a PC. I do know many people had issues with them working together. I’m not sure if they still do. I’m on a Mac and have had no issues for all the years I’ve been working on it. The best advice I could give you is to reach out to Universal Audio and tell them what you’ve got and see what they say. It sure is a whole new world! Do let me know what happens!

Hey. Honestly, a few years ago I would have said the quad. But these days with computers as powerful as they are, and with UAD going native, I would stick with the duo. But it really depends on what you’re trying to do. If you want to offload as much processing as you can from your computer, and you use only UAD plugins, then the quad is for you. For me, the Duo does just fine. Hope this helps!

@@زهيرسلمان hi there. Yes, UAD2 plugins run inside the Apollo. There are many of them. Those plugins must be released as UAD2 plugins by Universal Audio to run on the Apollo. There are native versions of SOME of the UAD2 plugins. Not many. But they release more every month. This will allow the plugins that used to only work inside the Apollo work on your computer instead. The native versions are part of a subscription, or if you own the UAD2 version, the native versions are free. I would suggest you try the Spark Subscription trial and see how it all runs on your computer first.
Interesting video, which I enjoyed, but I would like to know if in 2023 would you still recommend the Twin x duo? I have a Apollo twin mk1 and am wondering if in 2023 the twin x is still worthy of conservation or not? thanks in advanc
If you’re already invested into the UAD ecosystem with UAD2 plugins and you’ve got a Mk I Apollo, then it is worth it. Better preamps and converters. But if you’re not invested, and you just want a super clean high quality interface, the RME products are fantastic. For me, I’m heavily invested and also I use Luna a lot. So it makes sense to stay with UA. I hope this helps!
@@TheRecordist thank you so much. You have really really helped me. I have been holding off as I was expecting UA to update the twin x maybe, but it doesn’t seem to be happening just yet. I do have around 20 of the UAD plug-ins and I like the user friendliness of the Apollo’s. But the most important thing for me is sound and I just wanted to be sure that the upgrade from the mk1 would be noticeable and I would be able to hear a vast improvement.
Hey. Thanks for the comment! No, I wouldn’t choose Universal Audio for PC. There are all kinds of issues. Also, Thunderbolt isn’t USB-C. It’s entirely different. Even uses a totally different cable. Sorry about that.
Hey again, I ordered my new Apollo twin x! I just wondered something as I already have console and UAD software installed. I am guessing I can omit that part of set up right?! If I simply plug in New Apollo twin x will console and UAD software immediately see it? ( I understand how to register for plug-in bundle using my UAD account).. However, it’s console/software side of things that is slightly confusing! Many thanks.
Hey! Congratulations! That’s so exciting! Yes. The Apollo itself might need to update, but as long as you have UAD Meter & Control Panel installed - along with Console - then you should be good to go. Did you order a Thunderbolt cable? This is important.
@@TheRecordist I cannot thank you enough as your video really helped me to make up my mind and make the purchase😄👍🏾. Thanks for the heads up re. Cable. Thankfully I have just found a new OWC Thunderbolt 3 cable, that I haven’t used which came with their decking station!! .
Hi. Well, that depends on what you intend to do. If you’re just using unison and a plugin chain for tracking on the way in, then the duo is fine. But if you want to do mixing with UAD2 plugins then, you might want even a lot more than a quad. I use the Spark subscription and go native for mixing, and keep the plugins that are UAD2 for tracking only-except for Capitol Chambers and Ocean Way Studios, which are insane reverb plugins.
@The Time Preservation Society I use a macbook m2 max so going native shouldn't a problem, but i feel keeping capital Chambers running through the dsp would make the most sense as it's so processor heavy. Basically, I'm just trying to justify it to myself for the extra money 🧐
@@openboundariesofficial ah yes. Understood. However, you can ONLY run Capitol Chambers through the Apollo. There is no native version-yet. It’s quite an addictive rabbit hole though!
Hey man, incredible video. UAD just recently came out with the Twin X USB specifically for windows and im really interested and about ready to pull the trigger. Anything you think I should know beforehand? Has your opinion (before the new twin x usb version released) regarding compatibility on windows changed? Thanks in advanced!
Hey thanks! As far as the Twin X USB, it just came out and I tried looking for some real-person reviews and have so far found none. When I was talking about the issues with windows computers, I was referring to the Thunderbolt version. Apparently the USB versions seem to be just fine. But I can’t say for sure. Hey! Love this Video ! I have my apollo twin hooked up to a great river preamp. All of the sudden when I set to LINE level (preamp connected to Apollo twin via 1/4 set to input) the PHANTOM POWER will not turn on. If I set it to MIC level - phantom turns on. What am I doing wrong ? :( thank you!
Hey there. If you’re going out of the preamp and into the Apollo and using line in (which is correct), then the phantom power will definitely not switch on, since it’s designed to power a mic - not a preamp. You should instead only be using the phantom power on the preamp. If the preamp has no phantom power, and you have a condenser mic, then you need to ditch the preamp and use the Apollo preamps on mic mode. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
@@TheRecordist thanks! Ok so help me out - I am using my U87 which runs into the great river and into the Apollo twin system. Last night I was able to simply the turn phantom power on the Apollo and use the LINE input which is how the Apollo and great river are connected. @@TheRecordist BUT I am using the phantom power on the great river it seems .... I just feel like yesterday I was using BOTH and was able to use the line in - now I can't :(
@@ryancohenmusic yes. You definitely do NOT want to use phantom power when you’ve got a preamp connected. You only need one phantom power and that is on the preamp you choose to use. Outputting phantom power back into a line out of your preamp could damage your preamp or Apollo if you’re using TRS 1/4 inch cables. So, in summary: 1. Only the device you plug your mic into should provide phantom power to the mic. 2. The Apollo (when used to receive the output of your preamp) will then act as only an analog to digital converter. The preamp is bringing your mic up to line level and passing that appropriate level onto your Apollo where it’s converted to digital and then into your computer. Mic --> preamp --> Apollo --> computer. NOT: Mic --> preamp computer. Hope this helps. Haha
@@TheRecordist you're the best - makes total sense - so my preamp phantom power is ON - Apollo 48v is NOT illuminated. When you add preamps/effects to Console like say a compressor on channel 1 is that stored in the device itself? Meaning, those are applied outside the daw? Do they persist after reboot?
Yes and yes. The compressor would be stored and operated on the Apollo. After a reboot it would remain. You can also create an unlimited amount UAD plugin chain presets if you want. If you dial in a great sound for tracking a song with a certain singer with a certain mic, you can save it and it stores the preset on the Apollo. Then you can call it up whenever you want.

Hey there. The one I reviewed here is a Thunderbolt version. There is a massive difference between thubderbolt and USB-C even though they look the same. A USB-C cable will absolutely not work with this Apollo - thus USB-C to USB-A will definitely not work. Sorry about that.
@@TheRecordist Oh, okay... I use the Apollo Twin right now and it works fine with USB-A. Is it much worse than the X version especially in sound ? I mean, I had the Steinberg UR22 MKII before and it at least felt like a good upgrade, but the X version seems to have more useful features.
do you think the apollo twin x duo and the apollo x quad got any difference in sound quality or does the quad sound wayyy better cuz im thinking about to get the duo cuz its 500$ less what is your opinion
Hey. No difference in quality but the DSP is double. So if you’re looking at using UAD2 plugins while mixing, this will help a lot. The duo maxes out rather quickly. I don’t really use UAD2 plugins for mixing, and with the Spark subscription plan, I get most of what I need natively. I use the DSP and the UAD2 plugins on the way in. Like unison preamps or c-vox. Whether duo or quad, it’s got the same preamps and converters so you will not be upgrading the sound quality if you went with the quad. You will only be doubling the DSP (CPU chips). So instead of two Sharc chips, you’ll have four. And this in no way changes the sound. It only adds more processing power for the plugins.
I think the questions are, should you buy UA DSP in 2023? UA DSP ROI versus buying a new computer (Apple Silicon)? I switched from UA dsp to 100% native 15 months ago. No latency issues, etc when tracking. In my experience...and based on numerous tests here on YT ... very, very.....very.... few people get even decent ROI with UA DSP. Regarding the UA plugins, yeah, they're good. I subscribe to Spark, but....they are absolutely not superior to many alternatives from LiquidSonics, Softube, Acustica(!), Plugin Alliance, etc, etc etc. Sorry, but this video reflects 2018/19..not 2023. Otherwise, great review ;)
Yes. There are many who feel this way. I also subscribe to Spark and they all run great on my Mac. However, the DSP is not as interesting to me as the Unison preamps. Once you get a good feel for them, they’re really fantastic. That’s why I got into Apollos. The Unison pres. But of course it all comes down to personal preference. Thanks for watching and for commenting with your opinions!
I’d say the same, except for the extra processing power that the Twin has (double DSP chips). And also the Twin X has upgraded converters. But for critical listening, both would be about the same. Cheers!
I got a hold of an Apollo Twin USB for Windows, and have noticed this "physical click" noise sometimes occurs randomly (does nothing to the audio output). Randomly, maybe two times a day I can hear a click or two without doing anything special, do you have any input on this - Is it normal?
That’s a great question. Does it sound like this? ruclips.net/video/49s2Fv42d3E/видео.html If so, it’s changing impedance and/or sample rates. It makes that physical click. You can force it to make that sound by changing the sample rate in CONSOLE or by plugging in a quarter inch guitar cable into the front of the Apollo. It’s weird that it’s doing that randomly. But if you’re changing between sample rates (like 44.1kHz and 48kHz) then that’s why it’s doing that. If not, then you might want to open a ticket with support.
@@TheRecordist I figured it might not be the sound you suggested. After more testing it might just be "clicks" or "cracks" noise from the metal construction expanding when heating up from cold temps after having my window open.
I have some questions for anyone to answer. 1) the pluggins the apollo comes with is intergrate with the unit? Meaning you can buy a used unit and itll bring all pluggins? 2)can you use all these pluggins on a editing software like davinci resolve? Im ready to pull the plug on this unit but i have these doubts. Thanks im advance guys😊
Hey there. I’ll answer for you. 1. The plugins run on the unit based on your user account. But yes, they run inside the Apollo. If you buy it used, make sure the previous owner transfers the presets to your account. 2. Yes. I quite frequently use the UAD2 DSP plugins inside of davinci resolve. A common one I use a lot is C-Suite C-Vox and it runs inside the Apollo. Hope this helps! Good luck!
@@TheRecordist btw do u know the difference between apollo twin with heritage bundle and apollo twin x heritage bundle? Seems to have same plugins and device has x and the other doesnt.
@@LuisMBuildz yes. The X is important. It has the updated and upgraded AD/DA converters. The non X models are the older style with older and less accurate converters. Between both, I’d get the X. The heritage just means a bunch of plugins that come with the unit.
so using LUNA on my Mac can do the DSP stuff instead of the Apollo (hardware) and its console (software)? if so, why would I want to spend a lot more cash for the 4 processor Apollo, and not just buy the 2 processor Apollo? also, didn't Universal Audio just make its plugins native, so they can be used with any DAW, not just LUNA or the Apollo console?
Hi Charles. Those are great questions. Luna doesn’t convert all Apollo plugins to native. Only the ones that are available native. And there are only a small selection of UAD native plugins released so far. You can test them with Spark. But Luna WILL make a couple of Luna plugins work natively (Neve or API Summing and the tapes). I expect that UA is beginning to move more into native for the future due to M1 and M2 chips etc. But for tracking and printing immediately, it’s great. Depending on which UAD plugins you enjoy, and where you would use them, the dual may be just fine. It’s up to your individual needs. Hope this helps!
@@TheRecordist thanks, I'm trying to figure out which Apollo to buy, and heard that only 1 or 2 DSP Apollos can't handle more than a couple/very few plugins, but it wouldn't matter if the Apollo's DSP can be bypassed, and all of the plugins I want to use can be added in LUNA on my Mac, with the Mac's M2 doing all of the processing, I'm new to all of this, and a bit confused 🤷🏻♂️
@@charlespatrick8650 yep I totally understand. It’s a lot. I have a twin duo. Basically, I’ll track with a chain like SSL unison preamp, then maybe a c-suite c-vox, then an 1176 or a Distressor compressor followed by an LA2A compressor. All in a chain that’s printing right into my DAW. When I use the Sphere mic, I might add the Sphere plugin as well. I have just enough DSP for that. Some plugins are light on DSP and others are more intensive (like Capitol Chambers). But that’s my main chain and then when I’m done that track, I unload those plugins and I’m back to zero again. So I can load whatever chain and print that chain to the track-committing it. When I mix, I will usually get a track perfect and freeze or bounce in place to free up the DSP again and print what I’ve done. But that’s only if I need to use DSP again. I have a spark subscription and that has many of the native mixing plugins that I like. But Capitol Chambers and Ocean Way are unmatched reverbs and they’re only available using DSP, so whatever I choose, I know that at the end, I want it freed up for those plugins. Aside from those reverbs, I mostly only bought UAD plugins that I intend to track with only. That way I’m never running out.
No. I don’t think there is. Also, one kind of needs them as much of the controls are tactile and requires the LEDs to let you know what’s going on. But if you mean to run in stealth mode, then no. Sorry about that.
Technically, the Twin X is higher quality because it has higher quality d/a and a/d converters. The preamps are the same in the solo and the twins all the way up to the X8 etc. The Solo has only one Sharc DSP chip and thus cannot run many plugins at the same time. But if you’re using it for VO work or the like, the solo would be all you need. So the answer to your question is that the X is better quality audio than the Solo but only with the digital/analog conversion.
Hey there. There’s no speed increase at all. Only the ability to load more plugins in the Apollo. It’s just double the DSP. Both the Duo and the Quad perform the very same. They sound the exact same. They’re the same speed of processing. If it were me, unless you need extra DSP for something, or if there’s a bunch of plugins you can only run in the Apollo, I’d save money and go with the Duo. These days computers can handle a lot more processing power. And UAD is releasing so many of their plugins in native versions. Hope this helps!
Hey. I hope I understand your question properly. The Apollo I reviewed here is a thunderbolt 3. This requires a Thunderbolt port on your computer and a Thunderbolt cable. It will not work with a usb-c cable. It has to be a thunderbolt 3 cable. I know it looks like it would work but it does not. And it doesn’t come with the cable. You have to buy that extra. But most places will throw in a thunderbolt cable if you ask them. Hope this helps!
I’m having trouble trying to install my Apollo interface been trying for 2 days I bought a new cable yesterday and still can’t get it to install correctly can you send me a link or something to the cable you have that works for you
@@drealmoneymitch2 hey. Also, opening a support ticket will help you.
Do i need the quad or is the duo enough to use EQ, compressor, saturation and autotune, maybe also formant pitching into the life-recording-chain and still have no delay/latency? How many more plugins can i put in there?
Hey! Thanks for the great question! Ok, that all depends on the exact plugins you want to use. Generally speaking, the duo will be more than sufficient for what you’re doing. But just in case, here’s a handy chart to show the percentage of a single DSP chip that each plugin needs. A duo has two of them. help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/articles/215262223-UAD-2-DSP-Chart Hope this helps!
Less noise than the Solo? No. It would be the same preamps, as I understand it. I don’t find that they are noisy unless you’re cranking them to power a low-powered mic like the SM7B. Even then, all Apollos are very good with noise when compared to many other interfaces on the market.
I like the concept but I keep hearing how it's designed with Mac in mind and despite claims of suitable with Windows, in reality it's a whole heap of trouble, 'gotcha..s', weird incompatibilities etc etc than many on YT warn against this if using a win platform!?? What is your personal view on this? Did you run/test on Win or Mac?
Hey Ricky. Thanks for watching! Like I mention in the video, I do not have experience running the Apollo on a Windows computer, but I have heard mixed reviews. It seems you are correct that Apollo works best on Mac systems. I have talked to many people who have had all kinds of issues on Windows, and others who seem to have no problem. I don’t know why that is, but I encourage you to check out the www.uadforum.com and perhaps ask some more seasoned Windows users. I haven’t used Windows in the last two decades. Sorry I couldn’t be more help.
I went with the Twin because I was interested in tracking with plugins on the way in and not mixing with it. And I’m glad I made that choice, since UAD has been going native.
For me, I’m glad I didn’t go for the quad. UAD is now slowly releasing all their greatest hits in native format. But if you need the DSP, then by all means, do what you must!
@@TheRecordist - I use it for real-time video-conferencing wet-mixing, & I run the C-Vox de-noiser, the Neve DFC, the VOG, the Oxford SuprEsser de-esser, & the Precision digital delay to sync up my audio with my video coming out of the ATEM Mini Extreme ISO. So, I need the extra DSP. ;>
Apollo...launched...you do make me laugh Gandalf. Mirth ans amusement wherever your feet dare to tread. 😅 Apollo´s first successful launch was not in 2012 but in 1967...the mission, that is. That was Bonnie and Clyde and The Dirty Dozen ago.🤣 Mind you, in terms of sound quality I can only afford a SSL 2. But it has given me much joy and pays the bills. So I may only be a Halfling when it comes to spending a lot of spondoolix on equipment, and wouldn´t mind the Apollo, but my gear serves me well... for now😜
I had the Twin Duo, got rid of it. Honestly the insanely expensive plugins on a DSP chip they have used since 2007 that runs 400mhz is just ridiculous .. Using RME now Thank god!
If I spend $1000 on an Apollo Twin, they will drop a new model 😂 Seriously is it worth it in 2023 and probably next ten years before I’d be willing to buy another $1000 interface
Honestly, you’re paying for the ability to pay for plugins. Yes, it’s great, and of course it’ll hold up for another decade. It basically makes your recordings sound more vintage with all the unison preamps. However, there are much better preamps and converters out there. Have a look at the Neumann MT-48mm when the RME interfaces.
@@TheRecordist thanks for the info, I’m still using a Scarlett 2i2 gen 1 😂 Both the Neumann and RME look amazing, but I’d like to stay under a $1000, dsp isn’t important to me
It's okay, I guess, that you mention inches and pounds for the US viewers (although I wish you wouldn't). But I don't think it's okay that you don't mention cm and kg for EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE WORLD - including your own compatriots. I know how to do the conversions, of course, but I really can't be bothered, because I don't think it's right that I should. At least the size and weight are not important in this case.
Truth, no, they are indeed just plug-ins, an emulation, they don’t sound like the real deal hardware units to anyone who’s used the real deal units. 2nd, not one of the hardware units sounds exactly like another identical unit next to it, the variance in values of the electronic components assure infinite sonic character changes, that said every single instance of the millions of people that use these plugins SOUND EXACTLY IDENTICAL, now you know why modern music has a homogenized milk toast sound, no character at all, buy hardware and use it to find a unique sound, daws and plugs are BS marketing schemes to corral ur $ into their pockets, nothings changed and u r farther from unique
I don’t think unique is the goal for these. While I agree with you on most of what you say, you must remember that “just get the hardware” is impossible for some people-even if they’re exceptionally talented. And some of the emulations would be downright impossible for most people. On my channel, I must always remember that not everyone will be able to afford high-end gear, but that doesn’t mean that they should quit creating. We can all do anything with anything if we know how to work with what we have. I’d love to talk only U87 Vintage, 414 vintage, Manley Reference, C12, C800G, and higher mics-and call all the Lewitts and Rødes and Aston mics junk, and go full snob, but that’s not the world we live in. And all of us can only do what we can do with the limitations we have. Do you have an outboard preamp/channel strip suggestion that is high end but affordable that I can get and review on my channel? If so, I’d love to hear about it. Thanks for watching!
@@TheRecordist to give you what i would do for channel strip if i had no experience DIY building or couldn't afford to buy to notch gear, I'd get a 500 series CAPI audio vp28 preamp, a 500 series eq and a 500 series compressor, you should be able to acquire all that for around $1k and the odds are 100% that ur purchase won't sound exactly like any other guy who purchased the exact same items, they simply cannot because there are a minimum of 100 individual electronic components within any piece of hardware, most of those components have values with a 20% range of variance, those components in combination will never land in the same spot sonically, that is why one channel in a console never sounds exactly like identical one next to it and is why old school recordings all have so much character and sound so unique to one another
Many people on windows computers have great success with the Apollos. Some have a lot of issues. I’m not a windows user so I cannot comment from experience. That’s a great question for the UAD forum.
forget it if your PC doesn't have a Thunderbolt 3 port, and can't be upgraded with a card for a Thunderbolt 3 port, USB is just too slow to avoid latency issues

That and getting all the native versions added to my account for plugins I've already bought the dsp version of has really just added more longevity to my purchases.

Killer review, this just sold the deal for me on buying one. I've been using the PreSonus 1810c, and it kills my tone to no end. 😂🤟

Hey man. I’m a Mac guy. So in our heads or not, I feel the same!

Hey. No problem! Yes, you can definitely use the UAD plugins on channels recorded through the Antelope, however, you cannot use them live on the way in as unison or record-FX. So you’d have to use them on tracks already recorded. For unison on the way in, you’d need to use the Apollo. Hope this helps!

Got it thanks!
Great video. So, can we get 2 headphone outputs? thank you
This is great..so if I have the Apollo twin x duo, I don't need a cloud lifter for my sm7b?
You don’t NEED it. But some prefer it so they’re not cranking their Apollos. I don’t ever use it. It’s not necessary at all, IMO.
"The older one gets, the more Pringles chips sucks...truth! I own a second hand Apollo Twin which I've owned for almost a year and a windows user, I'm experiencing mixed results with this set up.
They will just pretend these issues aren't widely known in some vain attempt to delay you refunding the product, or they'll just outright gaslight you for wanting your $1k interface that was advertised work on Windows _to actually work on Windows._ 😂
Moral of the story, don't use UA stuff if you're not on a mac.

Here’s a DSP requirement chart: help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/articles/215262223-UAD-2-DSP-Chart

Hi Gary. Yes indeed. I can give you exactly what I recommend. First off, your system is great, you’re in Logic (I work a lot in Logic too), and you’ve got enough ram by miles.
Here are my VO recommendations:
UAD PLUGINS:
1. Neve 88RS Channel Strip or:
2. SSL Channel Strip
3. AMS Neve DFC Channel Strip
4. C-Suite C-Vox (noise suppression)
5. Teletronix LA2A Silver
6. LA3A Limiter
FAB FILTER PLUGINS:
1. Pro-Q 3 EQ
2. Pro-L Limiter
OEKSOUND PLUGINS:
1. Soothe2 (resonance suppressor)
With these, you can do anything.

Hey. Honestly, a few years ago I would have said the quad. But these days with computers as powerful as they are, and with UAD going native, I would stick with the duo.

But the most important thing for me is sound and I just wanted to be sure that the upgrade from the mk1 would be noticeable and I would be able to hear a vast improvement.
Can I use this device for Mac and PC? I don't know if thunderbolt 3 would be working with a USB c port on windows.
Hey. Thanks for the comment! No, I wouldn’t choose Universal Audio for PC. There are all kinds of issues. Also, Thunderbolt isn’t USB-C. It’s entirely different. Even uses a totally different cable.

So, in summary:
Mic --> preamp --> Apollo --> computer.
NOT:
Mic --> preamp computer.
@@TheRecordist bro thank you for the reply! Do you know if you can route the outputs as well? Like if I want the Mic 1 muted to the monitors but not for the line outs is that possible?

@@TheRecordist yesssir but I meant is there any difference in sound of the way in between them both do they sound different from each other or they just sound the same thank you brother much love to you
@@38svn hey. No worries. They sound the exact same. The X series has upgraded preamps and converters. This makes all the X interfaces a higher quality than the regular Apollo Twins etc. But they’re the same.

Hi there. Just wondering, how much better than the Solo is the Twin, purely from a recording and critical listening purpose. Thanks.
I’d say the same, except for the extra processing power that the Twin has (double DSP chips). And also the Twin X has upgraded converters. But for critical listening, both would be about the same. Cheers!
Got it thanks! Curious as to why they’d be the same for critical listening. Doesn’t the DSP kick in there.

Does it sound like this? ruclips.net/video/49s2Fv42d3E/видео.html
If so, it’s changing impedance and/or sample rates.

A common one I use a lot is C-Suite C-Vox and it runs inside the Apollo.

so using LUNA on my Mac can do the DSP stuff instead of the Apollo (hardware) and its console (software)? if so, why would I want to spend a lot more cash for the 4 processor Apollo, and not just buy the 2 processor Apollo? also, didn't Universal Audio just make its plugins native, so they can be used with any DAW, not just LUNA or the Apollo console?
Is there an option to turn off the LED's?
No. I don’t think there is. Also, one kind of needs them as much of the controls are tactile and requires the LEDs to let you know what’s going on. But if you mean to run in stealth mode, then no. Sorry about that.
Apollo Twin X Vs Apollo Solo Same audio quality?? which one is better quality
So the answer to your question is that the X is better quality audio than the Solo but only with the digital/analog conversion.
thanks you♥️
@@TheRecordist thanks you ♥️
How much better is the apollo twin x quad core compared to the dual corein terms of processing speed or any other specs that is important?
@@TheRecordistthanks, this really helps
So da usb c thunderbolt 3 does not work for this does it have to be just a thunderbolt 3 for this to work ?

Woo hoo!

What did you decide to get?
@@Sundownerrr got one Quad for my Mac and the usb quad for my Windows pc…
Does Apollo Twin has less Noise ?
Less noise than the Solo? No. It would be the same preamps, as I understand it. I don’t find that they are noisy unless you’re cranking them to power a low-powered mic like the SM7B. Even then, all Apollos are very good with noise when compared to many other interfaces on the market.
@@TheRecordist ♥️♥️♥️thanks for helping
You may want one without even knowing why
Haha. Right?? That’s how it was for me! I’m a sucker for good marketing and product placement! Haha.
Don't bother using UA stuff on Windows. I learned myself the hard way.
So… why the twin and not the quad???
I went with the Twin because I was interested in tracking with plugins on the way in and not mixing with it. And I’m glad I made that choice, since UAD has been going native.
@@TheRecordist Thanks! great answers!
@@ramonbs6075 cheers!
Better to get the Twin X Quad, if possible, as it has more DSP capacity.
So, I need the extra DSP. ;>
@@RolandDobbins 10-4! You’ll definitely be needed the extra DSP for sure! Good call.
So I may only be a Halfling when it comes to spending a lot of spondoolix on equipment, and wouldn´t mind the Apollo, but my gear serves me well... for now😜
Hahaha! I love it!
I had the Twin Duo, got rid of it. Honestly the insanely expensive plugins on a DSP chip they have used since 2007 that runs 400mhz is just ridiculous .. Using RME now Thank god!
The RMEs are great interfaces.
RME GOATED
It's good but I don't like the shape. UAD must have 2 design like rack version and desktop version
Yes. Of course. You can purchase the rack versions as well. They’re great.
@@TheRecordist I mean twin-x shapes can be like x6 x8.
@@future_Victoryofficial oh. I see. No. They do not currently have anything like that.
If I spend $1000 on an Apollo Twin, they will drop a new model 😂
Seriously is it worth it in 2023 and probably next ten years before I’d be willing to buy another $1000 interface
@@TheRecordist thanks for the info, I’m still using a Scarlett 2i2 gen 1 😂
Both the Neumann and RME look amazing, but I’d like to stay under a $1000, dsp isn’t important to me
@@dividedbytimestudios the SSL 2 interfaces are actually really good. As are the Audient ones. Both don’t use DSP. Apollos are all about the DSP.
Great video - but let's face it - DSP plugins are out the door for most in 2024...
Yep. You’re right about that. Still, it’s nice to use when tracking on the way in. Not mixing though.
Mac? No, I'll never be that crazy. (I've got an iPad, and that's bad enough!). And since I won't go to the moon, Apollo's not for me.
Haha. Whatever floats your boat!
I struggle with that but I’ve got like 70% US viewers and they have a hard time with the conversion. I suppose I could try using metric.
@@TheRecordist to give you what i would do for channel strip if i had no experience DIY building or couldn't afford to buy to notch gear, I'd get a 500 series CAPI audio vp28 preamp, a 500 series eq and a 500 series compressor, you should be able to acquire all that for around $1k and the odds are 100% that ur purchase won't sound exactly like any other guy who purchased the exact same items, they simply cannot because there are a minimum of 100 individual electronic components within any piece of hardware, most of those components have values with a 20% range of variance, those components in combination will never land in the same spot sonically, that is why one channel in a console never sounds exactly like identical one next to it and is why old school recordings all have so much character and sound so unique to one another
What if i want it for windows, would it work?
Many people on windows computers have great success with the Apollos. Some have a lot of issues. I’m not a windows user so I cannot comment from experience. That’s a great question for the UAD forum.
forget it if your PC doesn't have a Thunderbolt 3 port, and can't be upgraded with a card for a Thunderbolt 3 port, USB is just too slow to avoid latency issues
