@@someone-xc1lj I think AV-1 or AE-1 are both great options. Honestly, both cameras are easy to learn on as they are quite simple so get whatever is cheapest. With a lens, I would recommend a 50mm 1.4 for portraits...it’s worth the extra bit of money
I still have the AE-1 I got new in high school (mumble mumble) years ago. I just want to point out that the AE-1 is usually referred to as being "shutter priority" since the user decides on the shutter speed and the camera will choose the aperture automatically. (Aperture priority, the more common option for cameras of this era, is the other way around.) When using an FD lens (the AE-1 will also take FL lenses) in manual mode set the shutter speed and hold the shutter button down half way and see the recommended aperture in the viewfinder's light meter. Manually set the lens aperture ring to the suggested f/stop or over or under as needed for you particular situation. Good luck and happy picture taking!
Hey Thomas! Thanks so much for the comment. Ah yes as soon as I uploaded it I knew I made a mistake but couldn’t be bothered fixing it 😂. That’s very interesting about the FL Mount never knew that!
The AE-1 has been my first camera I got almost 20 years ago. It still works like a charm and I use it occasionally. Great choice for everyone who doesn't want to break the bank. Also, lenses are awesome for the price!
3 years late to the party, but at 1:10 it should be noted that the Canon AE-1 is a shutter priority camera, as Ben correctly updates in his notes - you select the shutter speed and the camera will select the correct exposure by adjusting the aperture. For anyone who truly requires an aperture priority camera, this was available in the Canon AV-1, a contemporary of the AE-1.
I just picked up one at a flea market here in the US. I paid $85 for it. I think it was close to $90 after sales tax. I had to go to a camera store to buy a battery. They had 2 batteries in stocks so I bought both. So far I've shot 3 rolls of film through it but have only developed 1 roll. The closest camera store to me is nearly a 2 hour drive. They are mostly a film camera store. It's very small. I'll buy more film when I take these rolls too be developed. My camera has the shutter squeal. I just need to put a few drops of oil in the right spot to fix that. My understanding with film is that you over expose by maybe a stop for the shadows.
Unlike digital cameras with multiple "do-overs" shots, film cameras makes you think about what you're shooting. It makes take into consideration your subject matter, composition etc.
So glad you made this video! I hadn't thought about it til I watched it, but I actually have this camera! It was gifted to me a few years ago from a lady who's husband had passed. I put it away, not knowing how to use it. But after watching your video, got it back out. It appears to be in pretty good shape, no fungus that I can see, needs a battery. Came with 28mm, 50 mm, 90mm, and 75-205mm lenses. Might just have to give this film thing a go! Thanks so much for the video Ben! Hope all is well! Take care!
Oh no way! Paul you have to give it a go some day man, I'm sure you'll love it. Sounds like you got a really good collection of lenses there too. Would love to hear your thoughts after using it. Could be a very cool video if you decide to make one about it all. Cheers Paul, likewise!
@@bendroege yeah, hadn't thought about it in years but I guess the gentleman was an avid photographer in his day. Maybe when I figure out how to use it I will do a vlog about it one of these weeks! Thanks again for the video and reminding me I actually had this camera!
@@paulcookphotography That be so cool! Would love to see you do some portraits as well as landscapes, I'm sure the photos will turn out great. Let me know if you need any help with it!
Great video bro ! you covered everything from the price and how to use which is great for a beginner film photographer ! Honest Thoughts should be made weekly imo ! a great series for beginner film photographers out there
Lew Huai Thank you bro! Haha man that would be so cool to make, definitely something I would like to make more extensive in the future, and incorporate more than just cameras. Thanks for the love as always man, super appreciated. Cheers!!
Great video mate! Been wanting to dive into film after only shooting digital for a while but never knew which camera to start off with. I’ll definitely be looking for one of these bad boys! Thanks again
Hey Kieran! Hahaha man thank you, I really do need to make some more vids. Been way too long, life’s just gotten in the way. I’ll get on it ASAP. Hope your well man!
My story with this camera is curious, since out of 4 damaged canon ae1 I had to assemble 1, and now I have a beautiful camera that came back from death😂, but without a doubt it is a great camera😎👌
Hey Rhys! Wouldn’t worry about that at all. I presume you meaning scanning? Best thing to do is to get Develop + scans at the lab and they’ll take care of it all for you and send the files to your email. It’s a really good camera to get into film photography with.
Great vid Ben! I don't have this camera, but do have my mother in laws old Pentax cameras (k1000 and KX) with a nice collection of lenses. Maybe I should dust them off sometime. Love the images you were showing from the AE-1.
Thanks so much Paul! The K1000 is very similar to the AE-1, a great camera in itself! Definitely would love to see you try and it and hear your thoughts. Cheers for the support!
Thanks for the vid, I kind of want the AE-1 but I picked up a EOS 1000f for next to nothing. I can use it with my Canon EF lenses which meant I didn't need anything else. I might take it out with me next time. BTW I noticed your random Sidmouth shot!
Thanks so much Rob! Ah yes the EOS cameras are very good, super handy being able to use those newer lenses too. Haha that’s a great observation, I was down in Sidmouth for a few days last year...such a nice place. Cheers!
@@bendroege I did go through a stage of getting vintage cameras to get that genuine feel. My favourite i have is a couple of 1936 Super Baldina it's a really interesting 35mm camera. They kind of work but I'd love to use the parts to make one really good camera. I'm not sure I'm that skilled though but they're worth much more now than when I bought them.
Rob Hills Oh nice one! Haha yeah they do tend to break quite easily which is a shame but hopefully can be fixed. Sounds like a super cool camera too just had a quick search. All the best with it Rob!
Nice one mate. Any chance you can make a video comparing different film cameras like the Canon AE-1 to help me decide which is the best option to start shooting film with?
In a very short answer though, I would say start with something real cheap, any SLR will do, but invest all your money in the highest scan resolution :)

Excellent video! I just received a Canon AE-1. It has been nearly twenty years since I used a film camera. Enjoying learning again. Thanks.
Hey thank you Edward! It’s such a beautiful camera, I hope you enjoy using it. Cheers!
Love my AE-1. Had the shutter "squeak" on the first roll I put through but didn't affect photos. Easy fix and now like new again :)

Canon AE-1 prices are getting silly on the bay lately.
Single Lens Reflex haha it’s so strange isn’t it. Sometimes I see them so cheap ($150) and then other listings are like $500
Hi Ben! Is it different from ae-1 program!?
Hi Borith! Only slightly, the program is a newer model with a “program” mode, but I believe that’s the only difference
Is the AE 1 a full frame ? Great video.
Hey John! Yes it’s is. 35mm full frame sensor. Cheers!
Youre so cool, love your videos

cannon av-1 or a-1 better
jk all of the cannon a series are very good exept for the at-1 its a manual ae-1
