- Though made famous by his unorthodox "Big Man" touchdowns, William Perry was much more than just a gadget player. He was the anchor of the Chicago Bears run defense during their historic Super Bowl run, and was the prototypical Two-Gap Nose Tackle of his era, demonstrating athleticism against both the run and the pass, and paving the way for future big men like Wilfork, Ngata, and Hampton.

I'm too young to remember any of this but watching it now I am absolutely stunned by his ability to simply move forward like people aren't even there.
He'd crush bones and break ribs just by falling on you...he was a beast.
He was something the Beast!
Watch Reggie White highlights
I really enjoyed watching him.
His ability to move forward? You mean, he can walk? Really?
I met this man in Vernon Hills, Illinois. I was at a shop next to where he pulled up with a friend in a super clean, baby blue Mercedes. I'm about 99.98% sure it was a video store. I couldn't help myself and went over and said hello. I did not need any kind of autograph; I just wanted to tell him I was a fan and I wanted him to have a good season and continued success. He was as affable as you could be.
And I am sorry to hear of his medical difficulties as his years advanced. Forever a hell of an athlete to me. And thousands of others.
Happy Birthday, William!
DA BEARS!!
Yeah he was sight to see so big he didn't need a number. just think about that big dude falling on ya.😂
What a legend, I used to love watching the Fridge & Payton play. In the UK on Sundays, the NFL show would air games.
First NFL player over 300 pounds to get a rushing touchdown, dude was a tank
Cripes, how stupid. A TD in a game already won. Lateral movement? Har, har, har.
I remember watching him on TV over here in UK. He was both the irresistible force AND the immoveable object. I often wondered what went through a QBs mind when they saw this behemoth hurtling towards them. Amazingly athletic for such a big man - absolute legend !
I would figure something along the lines of the Robin Williams skit about Perry.
He was VERY ATHLETIC.
Nice clean player. No dirty tactics, pure talent
Opponents see perry coming towards them at full sprint - oh shit 😲😲😂
All legs and heart. People that hated the bears watched every week anyway. One of the most entertaining players ever.
Respect
One of the most Recognized Personality's on the Planet......at the time
Try in the USA. Most people on the planet didn't even know or cared what American Football was, much less who an individual player was.
@@christianlarsson2038 It was amazing entertainment at the time, most old nfl players a busted up, and never really got paid much.
American Football became a popular craze among a lot of people in the UK after they watched the Bears win the Superbowl with the Refridgerator the standout player in February 1986. He did become widely known here for a time after that. It was a time when Association football (i.e. soccer) was going through its darkest hour, and a lot of people were looking for an alternative. However, from the 1986 World Cup onwards the round ball game in England started to recover, though tentatively at first - a process which even the horror of Hillsborough could not derail in spite of the stance of much of the media at the time.
Man I remember watching this amazing man play football back in the '80s he was my hero as a boy. I am the crowd going so wild when he would just steamroll right over everybody. Then you have to keep in mind William Perry is competing against the strongest and finest athletes on planet Earth and he just steamrolled right over them like they were paper machets. He is an amazing man and I'm privileged to have watched him play, this is a great video too.
The only football player to never be forgotten in my book.
You must have a VERY small book.
@@dougamundson6836 ya its one page. title and one name.
What a surprise. You have knowledge of ONE guy. Gee, he must be the best ever if that is all you know about. @@rukus100821
I’m glad I was able to see this Man play!
My fav bit was when the quarterback shrugged a tackle from number 50 and would have had just enough time to see Perry was about to hit him and say "fuck"
I'm a Bears fan. It broke my heart when The Fridge went to the Eagles.
I only ever watched this sport as a kid......this guy is most of what I remember. Brutal!
The same here, I never watched it until I seen my Dad watching him and they called him The Fridge, I was hooked and fascinated by this human running brick wall!! 🤭😂😂
"Ring ring"
Hello?
"Is your refrigerator running?"
FCK YES IT IS! 🤣🤣
Perry was an incredible athlete. So big and so fast! Scary.
For being that big he moves pretty fast
very fast
The whole stadium used to shake when he ran
I miss the days of watching a whole game, now it's just highlights of just a game.
I'm a Packers fan, but I gotta Like this video and give props. He was a great player and a joy!
Ah, when NFL players were actually allowed to tackle a quarterback without an automatic flag being thrown.
Good times...
I was thinking the same thing. How many of those QB hits would be flagged today.
For real
i just laughed, because they considered it a highlight.
saw that one 16 dude lose his brain never think the same again. but he wanted toplay aagainst fridge RIP
People may think I am crazy but I think he would be a starter on a GOAT team
Very athletic 85 bears best defense ever!
If I was an O-lineman lining up against someone whose nickname was “The refrigerator”, I’d probably shit myself.
Was Fridge on the Tecmo Bowl Nintendo game of 85-86.?? Remember the Bears on that game being awesome!! Walter Payton was one of the fastest on it...LT was wicked fast on Defense as well.. good memories, good times in a completely different era...
Imagine if the fridge and LT were on the same team
absolute legend, i salute you sir
Wow, it wasnt only power , i can see lots of technique there
His work on John Hannah in Super Bowl XX. To me, John Hannah is the greatest offensive lineman. He was a wall that attacked you strategically. Yet, Fridge grabbed his biceps and held him up to let others go through the whole game.
Don't forget, Hannah was in his 13 th season, and this was his last game ever.
Good point. Hannah never gets the accolades he deserves. Growing up in Mass, he was our hero though.
Legend
Beautiful!!!!!
Everybody loved The Fridge. I was sorry he didn't get to have a longer career.
Amazing.
Can't argue with physics. Thanks Fridge #72
I remember a friend of mine used to call him “The man that runs over people”. 😂😂😂
3:33 so beautiful. he was a bear-man!!!
I would be terrified if I saw refrigerator running full spring at me
The one and only!
Probably an O line's worst fear. No matter the outcome, you'll be exhausted by the end of the day.
The FRIDGE!!!
Monster
2:49 bruh I was #76 and that's prolly what I looked like when I played xD
Wow! I see a legend 👍
The G.O.A.T of NFL Big Men
What a BADDD man!!!
Now I have to go watch the super bowl shuffle video.
LOL😅
I remember his coke and McDonalds commercials as a kid. He was my hero.
Saved the best for last I see.
Remember at school in late eighties in uk American football was big always on TV and we used to collect these little plastic helmets and the fridge was memorable IM Sur I remember him bulldozing through everyone carrying one of his players At the end zone like a D9 dozer
Is your refrigerator running?
Oh, shit here he comes
So he was 6’2” and 335 lbs back then….about the same size as a lot of other football players but for some reason, Perry just looks SO MUCH larger than everyone else!!
I just added the iconic William Perry card to my Madden lineup
Dan Hampton of the Bears said that William Perry had the quickest first step of any NFL defensive lineman.
0:41 horse collar but still fye
The Fridge live on in our memories forever
The predecessor to future 300+ lbs run stuffing DTs.
Use to live across the hall from me in my apartment building in Aiken SC
The one thought that ran through a quarterback's head when he saw the fridge coming at him. "Damn this is going to hurt."
WILLIAM PERRY 🏈
♠ 💜
Man was so big he didn't need a number. looked like ah NFL player on a highschool team
You should include the refrigerator. William “The Refrigerator” Perry had a few TDs in his career.
When he’s running, he’s thinking, somebody tackle me please
McMan Payton Fridge they were rad
I would've killed to go see the 85 Bears
46-10!
Get this man into Canton already.
Is your *sweets nervously* refriger *gulps* ator running
Holy shit - that sack at 1:32 is killer!
58 was always coming unblocked and just blowing quarterbacks away
I watched it about five times, it was just so incredible!
It’s crazy ppl use him as QB I’m madden Tournaments
I imagine those seeing him coming saw there life flash before there eyes
😢😢❤
How does someone that big swim that small and run that fast. Don’t realize how little he actually used his physicality, only when he needed too
Man eats o line for breakfast
He is fast for a frige
I used to be a bears fan Walter peyton and the fridge
Can someone show the play when he carries the quarter back across the line...
I think he was Rookie of the year in 85 too.
I remember the we were classmates at Booker High and he would come over to my crib and we would eat Doritos and play ps2 he was a cool guy he always was in the ice box and that’s how he got the name ‘Fridge’
No, he was called “fridge” because he was about as big as a fridge
We got the Halo theme in the background
Remember when the bears had scary ass players
the national flag football league has forgotten the fridge
Love the Fridge! But it's a shame Walter Payton didn't get a chance to score in a Super Bowl. Perry was a gimmick at RB, but Sweetness was a legend. What was Ditka thinking, calling Perry's number at the goal line instead of Payton's? Especially the second time, after Refrigerator Perry had already scored once.
Still my TEAM
He was just inducted in his High school hall of fame. Aiken High
wow Marino must have hated being crushed by him like a sad hat out on the freeway.
Love this shit . Back n the day when football was for men . Back when you could actually hit someone . Back then when you actually used your pads . Miss this kind of football .
And let’s not forget, he was a G.I. Joe.
U could spear back then!
The fridge took a QB helmet off 20yards one time
idk why they added 2:20 when he gets absolutely ran over 😢
I remember watching him, and I would not want to be the guy with the ball. 😏
hes the refrigerator with 2 doors
Suhhhhhh before Suh
They called Wm. Perry the Refridgerator because when he opened his fly a light went on inside.
does this music make me think hes god son?> this guy the rookie no dumb cookie.
That looks like it feels like getting hit by a train.
He wasn’t brutal when he tackled. He could have injured easily
What’s crazy is this is my Auncle bro
Thats cap
Yeah that’s not a actual fact
Sad to hear about 'the refs' health.
who know about sports recognize that this is just a big guy nothing else .
If you knew anything about sports you'd know there's this thing called positions in a team sport. You wanna see how Messi does at nose tackle? Man would be flattened.
Back then at NT you need a big fat guy with speed, less overall athleticism. Now if you want an NT that's big you need some athleticism so guys like Vita Vea are better suited to eating up blockers and cleaning up the backfield
@@sohumchaudhary7968 yes ha ha position for fat guy simple like that . I will repeat who know about sports will recognize this is a fat guy with a 20% skills .
@@miguelena40 My point is at that level of competitiveness it's about being fat and having MORE skill than the next fat fuck at taking point and triple teaming blockers if you can.
@@miguelena40 What sports do you play? I used to wrestle. Handfighting and leverage tactics that dlinemen drill personally helped me manhandle some of the guys across me. Just my experience
Nice, but I couldn't watch without turning off the sound.
