    you’re female filmmaker goals tbh 💜

    • @dmbstash4119
      @dmbstash4119 6 лет назад +5

      Nitpicking here but when you add 'female' on it, sort of classifies it in a different category, if a young girl said to her parents that she wanted to be a filmmaker but didn't think she could do it, you could point to people and say "look at this respected filmmaker" and the female part of that speaks for itself.
      Kathryn Bigelow is one of the top filmmakers of the past few years with a long career in the business, she is considered among the ranks of the most noted male filmmakers just the same. It sort of puts it into a different category that opens the door for people to separate the two in their head.

    • @KatAmarie
      @KatAmarie  6 лет назад +16

      +DMB STASH your point would be valid if we started off on an equal level. But we did not. Women were and are discriminated. Current situation in the filmmaking industry requires using the “female filmmaker” term.

    Quite the good tips, especially on the technical side, color grading is the hardest side for me, i can't focus on it and i think i might have some sort of colorblindness. The opinion of men who tell women they can't be in filmmaking is worth as much as the one of a dead worm. On the criticizing is tough but essential, between all the people who will just tell idiotic stuff, there are people who will effectively make you understand your style better, also every review is good review in the beginning.

    Summary!
    1. Don't film on an empty background.
    2. Be inspired by bigger filmmakers, but don't compare yourself to them.
    3. Listen to conversations & write more natural sounding scripts.
    4. Show. Don't tell. Don't describe what's supposed to be on screen.
    5. Don't speak what your character is like, show it with clothes, imagery, stuff on shelves, people they meet, places they go, music they listen to, etc.
    6. Unseen can be scarier than seen. People can fill in the gaps with what scares them.
    7. Explore locations before the shoot.
    8. In thrillers & horrors, give audience a moment of release so that attention grabbing scenes become meaningful.
    9. Grab attention in the beginning. Instant action, strong first liners, etc.
    10. Use readily available locations. "How can I make one location seem bigger?"
    11. When writing first script, don't delve into details. Write what comes to mind.
    12. Write something that's detached from main story, then try to connect them.
    13. Whatever fps you use, double the shutter speed. E.g. 24 fps and 1/50 shutter speed.
    14. Audio is important!
    15. Better equipment can take you to better places, but better skills can take average equipment to Great places.
    16. Use RUclips tutorials.
    17. Lenses are as important as the camera.
    18. Watch bad films. You learn better because mistakes stand out.
    19. You can't fix it in post.
    20. Color palette/film look can be important. Think about it before you start filming.
    21. Don't let somebody tell you you can't be in filmmaking because you're a woman. Keep working. Prove to them they are wrong.
    22. Find a job as an extra on a shoot. You learn the workflow.
    23. The people you want in your team will read your script only once!
    24. Try to recreate color grading from bigger films as practice.
    25. Let people criticize your work. Listen to it. Criticism is compliment.
    26. You can't make everyone happy.
    27. There's no good film without good ideas or anything to say. Read, watch, write.
    28. Storyboard, even if you're bad at drawing. Less stress on set.
    29. Don't trust yourself to remember an idea. Write it down even when you wake up at night.
    30. Ideas come to you sometimes. If you gather them enough you might find a way to connect them.

    I struggle with writing scripts. I mean, I like writing and I'm good at it but only when it comes to more complex types of writing, or better say longer, bigger. When it comes to a film storytelling I remember that professors from my film school were telling us to think by a picture, not word. And so here I am with my drawing skills, tempting to draw storyboards (which I love, which I'm good at, which tell everything I want my films to say) but my present promoter said that I MUST to write a script. I mean, whatever she says, but she claims that it will never work in the future when I'll have only storyboard, no matter how good it'd be. And I disagree. What'd you say about it?

    • @KatAmarie
      @KatAmarie  6 лет назад

      That depends on who you want to be - you could just be a storyboarder, although that won't let you come up with your own ideas.
      I agree with your promoter to some extent - you cannot express everything through storyboards, especially dialogues. On the other hand, they set the scene even better than a script. But I'd still say they work best when they go hand in hand.
