When I'm approaching a crossing I always listen out to see if there's a train approaching and if not and the line is clear in both direction then I cross and I never use my phone or listen to music/podcasts when I'm about to cross an active train line

I think another distraction which is a real risk followed a fatality at a uwc near to my local station. The RAIB report concluded that someone crossing on foot saw a diverted intercity train standing at a nearby junction. This was unusual. Focussing on the stationary train, the pedestrian stepped out, not noticing a train on the other line, which was running fast through the station. The crossing was closed later as the line was resignalled and the LSL increased to 100MPH, but one lesson was that just because one risk has been identified doesn't mean there isn't another
