  • On today’s episode of Wisconsin fisherman I had the idea of a challenge. Going to the snag wall at the dam, get lures from it, then catch fish on the found lures! It was a great idea! I found lots of lures but the fish were hesitant to bite but we got a couple!
    Thanks for watching!

Thanks for cleaning up the river! There was some strange tackle that people have tried. Have you seen the video of the guy hauling lures out of the Fox River? He had many dozens of lures, but he also had scuba gear and was in a really popular fishing area.

SERIOUS WARNING: A friend back in the day before cams and RUclips used to do this along the OUTSIDE of dam "long walls" on the Mississippi. One afternoon he was down (alone, and never with anyone topside) when he reached for one lure and got double hooked past the barbs by a hidden lure. The lure was tied to an early version of Spider Wire. The real issues were that as a greedy double-handed snatcher, his other hand got snagged by a different lure as he was trying to free lure #1 and even though he had a lineman's pliers and was able to reach it, the pliers couldn't do a thing to lure #1s line as it was so thin and he couldn't reach #2' because of how the original hand was hooked.
By the grace of God he was on a fresh tank that was chill-filled and he didn't panic and burn through his air, as it took nearly the entire tank to work out his impending death, finally getting enough slack to reach hook #2, force the hook through his palm and past the barb so he could cut it off and remove that hook. This allowed him to unravel enough of lure #1 so he could unscrew the eyebolt from the lure and surface with his trophy Rapala firmly embedded in his hand.
That lure is now framed and resides over his desk as a reminder that youth and exuberance are no match for age, skepticism and several "awe-crap" backup plans.
Always have a front mounted dive knife, a side cutter with no cutting gap and one person who at least knows where to find the body.

That thought definitely crossed my mind.. I’ve been hooked many times being a fishing guide. When it comes to a situation like that with no air I’d be ripping the hooks out my hand to go get air!

I like to make my own versions of spinners / lures so personally, most of what you put in the "junk" bag I would have kept and cleaned up and refurbished, *especially* the Mepps. But hey, me and free are very old friends and I love free. I also had an old fishing friend (not anymore) that would burn box springs, tie a rope to them and toss them in by shore fishing spots and collect tackle. This is why I don't fish with him anymore. SO, if you see a rope in the water tied to a tree, do everyone a favor, check it and take care of it to prevent the freeloaders from taking our tackle.

Wow, there was a spot on Mill Creek near Stevens Point, WI that would always snag my lure. I swore that there must have been an old bed spring down there. And maybe there was!

Kyle that 3 blade soft plastic was a helicopter lure and was around in the late 80's and 90's. One of those bass legends was promoting it. Stupid stuff.
