    AMD should've released the 7900 GRE as the 7800 XT and the "7800 XT" as the 7800 non-XT. RDNA3 has lost the meaning of XT and the "7600 XT" perfectly demonstrates this. This is like as if NVIDIA released a Ti card but actually they just released the non-Ti version, overclocked it a little and slapped a Ti sticker and price on it.

    RX 7800 XT has 60 CUs and RX 7900 GRE has 80 CUs which is 33% more. Sounds cool but RX 7900 GRE suffers a lot from cut down memory bus and reduced Infinity cache, AMD disabled in it two of six MCDs in original Navi 31. They also significantly lowered memory clocks versus other two Navi 31 GPUs. Even RX 7800 XT has higher memory clock, thus having same 256 bit memory interface RX 7800 XT has better memory bandwith. Due to that you will never get huge difference in performance between RX 7800 XT and RX 7900 GRE. Having 33% more CUs it is in best case 12-14% faster than RX 7800 XT in certain games while it costs 150 USD more which is 30% of RX 7800 XT MSRP. RX 7800 XT still has much better value than RX 7900 GRE.

    imo the 7900xt is the true 7800xt and 6800xt successor at the $650 price point. The 7900 is better, but not by much ver the 7800xt and in a weird spot, which might be why it's not available in north America.

      The 7800xt and the 7900 gre have different specifications, the 7800 xt is more suitable for games with high frame rates in 1440p while the 7900 gre for heavier games and if you want to get closer to 4k

      the 7800xt has almost the same performance as the gre but costs much less so that card is still the best to buy for 1440p. wish they made the 7900 gre available everywhere and cost 500 usd cuz they basically pulled the same shenanigans as nvidia with making lower models, giving them a higher title and then releasing their proper version. even when ngreedia did that for the super at least they released the real version for the same price as the old one, amd here gives u the real 7800xt in the form of the gre but for 150 more msrp :(

    • @NGreedia
      @NGreedia 6 месяцев назад +1

      @metalface_villain yeah $650 is absurd for less than 10% improvement. It's reportedly going to be $550, but ideally, it would be great if it replaced the 7800xt at the $500 price point and the 7800xt fell to $450. That would give it enough distance vs nvidia to make it a compelling alternative

    the RX 7900 XT uses the Navi 31 XT as where the RX 6800 XT uses the Navi 21 XT, this is in the actual reality the RX 7900 XT predecessor.
    The RX 7900 XT is the actual RX 7800 XT, as where the RX 7900 GRE would of been the actual RX 7800, here is why, well from my perspective :)
    The RX 7900 XTX uses the Navi 31 XTX GPU as where the RX 6900 XT uses the Navi 21 XTX GPU, so as that goes the 7900 XTX is the actual RX 6900 XT replacement if coming form the GPU name, right.
    So here a list I made coming from GPU names Navi 3xx from Navi 2xx on how and what evolved in to.
    01. RX 7900 XTX uses Navi 31 XTX, this replaced RX 6900 XT that uses Navi 21 XTX
    02. RX 7900 XT uses Navi 31 XT, this replaced RX 6800 XT that uses Navi 21 XT
    03. RX 7900 GRE uses Navi 31 XL, this would of replaced RX 6800 which uses Navi 21 XL
    04. RX 7800 XT uses Navi 32 XT, this would of replaced RX 6700 XT which uses Navi 22 XT
    05. RX 7700 XT uses Navi 32 XL this would of replaced RX 6600 which uses Navi 21 XL.
    06. RX 7600 uses Navi 33, his would of replaced the RX 6500 XT which uses the Navi 23
    Now if I'd call out actual names for the RNDA 3 GPU line it would look quite different on what we have now.
    01. RX 7900 XTX should of just been named RX 7900 XT, since the previous series never had a XTX model**
    02. RX 7900 XT = actual RX 7800 XT
    03. RX 7900 GRE = actual RX 7800
    04. RX 7800 XT = actual RX 7700 XT
    05. RX 7700 XT = actual RX 7700
    06. RX 7600 = actual RX 7500 XT.. hmm oke.
    it's as if everything increased one per tier if using my list and there was no real RX 7600 at all, which makes it even more weird.
    Now there was a RX 6900 XTX, but this was a cancelled engineering sample, it was faster than the RX 950 XT even being, it had stock water cooling, you can find this card at GPU-Z,
    the RX 6900 XTX uses the Navi 21 XTXH GPU, some RX 6900 XT's did come with this GPU, cards from Sapphire's Toxic Air Cooled & Power Color's Red Devil Limited Editions.
    Navi 21 XTXH tends to clock quite higher than the standard Navi 21 XTX from RX 6900 XT and Navi 21 KXTX which the RX 6950 XT uses.
    Very nice video though, as always :) Currently again, I'm a proud Sapphire Nitro+ RX 6800 XT Special Edition user, Sapphire fixed my card and it's running great again :)
    The Sapphire Nitro+ RX Vega 64 is just part of my collection now :)
    The bottom line AMD messed up the entire naming list for the RDNA 3 line at the get go, and with the lists I posted each new GPU would automatically have more Compute Units than their predecessors as well.

    In general.. 7900xt is slightly cut-down version of full 7900xtx die (15% weaker)
    While 7900 GRE , is cut-down version from 7900xt (15% weaker than 7900xt while being 30% weaker than 7900xtx)
    It's still 12% faster than 7800xt, personally I would pick 7800xt & OC for $200 cheaper, especially since they are all 16GB
    I picked 7900xtx for $850 (1000$ with Tax) back in mid 2023.. I still don't like the $1000 price, but my 4K screen need a powerful GPU

    • @Jack_Sparrow131
      @Jack_Sparrow131 8 месяцев назад

      @AncientGameplays No & Yes.. some 7900 GRE is based on AMD reference design.. which have lower wattage (255w)
      I seen dozens of benchmarks showing 7900 GRE faster than 7800xt by 5% only, because they both was on 255w limit
      Your Sapphire Pulse have around 300w.. which improves frequency & power limit (up to 15%)
      Overall.. 300w on this card is 2 much.. that's why reference design cap at 255w (Sapphire cooler is bigger & can handle it)

    • @AncientGameplays
      @AncientGameplays  8 месяцев назад

      300W is far from much on this card. The limit of the reference 7800XT is 290W btw, and the reference 7900XT has a limit of 350W@@Jack_Sparrow131

    • @Jack_Sparrow131
      @Jack_Sparrow131 8 месяцев назад

      @AncientGameplays yeah I forgot to say stock limit.. OC always give you another small 10% to 15% wattage
      My 7900xtx (Powercolor Hellhound) have 350w stock, & up to 415w with power slider
      Still.. AMD Reference Design have around 10% power (15% slider is fake for reference design) that's why 7900xtx reference design cap from 350 stock to only 390w (also, OC reference with high frequency give lower wattage to VRAM) Which lead to lower fps Lol

    Rationally speaking, just realized, the real 7800 XT should've been 7900XT or XTX (we are missing full die Navi 31 at 3.2 Ghz) with a performance leap as used to be. Besides 7900GRE is just a 6950XT layout revision (same cores, memory, cache, etc.) in RDNA3 with little better RT, AV1 and the dual-issue FP32 with a up to 2x FPS results still to see.
    Don't you think 7900M with the exact refreshed specs of the 6800XT is more of a real 7800XT?
    Too mine there are two ways to make a new generation:
    -1. you make it noticeable better in every aspect and mantain or lower the price or rise it a little amount.
    -2. you make better in main areas by not much but you enhance energy efficiency and value by keepeing performance but lower power and price (or keeping it similar).
    Also is important to keep naming meaningful according to competition and minimum misleading to more performant than actually is.
    7900 nowhere near 4090 in raw perfromance (thanks to lack of optimization is truly surprisingly closer to a 4090 than it should in most cases, unless DLSS and RT).
    7900 vs "4070 Ti super fromer unlaunched 4080 12Gb but now with 16Gb and better 4080 actual chip" that we all know it is what an amazing 4060 Ti 16GB should be in 2024 or at least a 4070 should've had to be. Pretending to be half, one or up to two and a half tiers where you actually are...what a naming Team, Optimistic Marketing at best. And don't turn on RT or naming will hurt. Why to name your products so riskly? More profit, better for Nvidia naming/pricing scheme reference and support, but what gamers get for they money is questionable. Not expecting 2x the FPS from 7900GRE vs 7600 XT 16GB, but they should be by a bigger margin. Not 4090 times better than 4060/Ti in RT... harder to swallow than it should.

    If you ask me, the 7900 XT should have been called the 7800 XT, and that would have been an even more consistent way of naming the cards, but I do agree that calling this card the 7800 XT would have made more sense than calling it the 7900 GRE (with the 7800 XT dropping down to "7800" without the "XT").
    To me, the naming should match the naming of the product that a new product is replacing, and, hopefully that would normally mean that it would be based on whatever product has the closest manufacturing cost, though if a new product has an unusually large improvement in performance, that could justify naming it differently I suppose. In the case of the 7000 series, the performance improvement over the previous generation was BELOW average at least for the top GPU dies, so, if anything, they should have adjusted the naming so that the top card was called the 7900, or 7800 XT, or 7800 XTX maybe. The partially cut down version of Navi 31 (which got called 7900 XT) is replacing the 6800 XT, and so I think it would have made the most sense to call IT the 7800 XT, and I would have been totally happy if they had decided to call it just the 7800 (without an XT). The GRE isn't even a widely available product, but it would have made more sense to me to call it the 7800. The 7800 XT is clearly a 7700 XT replacement, as it is a full Navi 32 die, replacing the 6700 XT and 6750 XT.
    If the 7800 XT had actually been called the 7700 XT, it would have arguably made that graphics card look better, because people would have been more likely to have compared it to the 6700 XT and 6750 XT. If you adjust for inflation, the 7800 XT's MSRP is actually LESS than the launch MSRP of the 6700 XT, and it's around 43% faster, with more memory bandwidth, and 33% more Vram, and that actually is a pretty impressive improvement, but most people in the media were comparing it to the 6800 XT or 6800. A 43% improvement in performance, in addition to more RAM, is a solid generational improvement (better than the improvement of the 7900 XTX over the 6900 XT).

      @@AncientGameplays but it's just my fault, I checked everything and was sure that there would be no bottleneck with the 5600x, in fact everything is fine and all the data is also good, it's just that the processor can't open the video card anymore, if there was a bottleneck then the problem would be in VR games as well , the difference is in the temperatures of video cards and is very colossal, the hottest part of the 5700xt was around 110 degrees, although the video card worked perfectly. I'm waiting for some kind of breakthrough from AMD, after all, the video card is built on a different rdna 3 architecture. Nice video! I remember before release of the 7800xt there was a lot of stuff going on in the rumor mill about how the 7800xt die was going to end up...would it be a significantly cut down 7900xt/7900xtx chiplet design, or a repurposed server chip, or a 4 MCD chiplet design like the 7700xt (which we ended up with)...it seemed AMD really struggled on how they wanted the chip to perform compared to what options and optimization work would be needed to release the chip in viable form...the result is a bit unfortunate...especially given how long it took to release....while there is nothing wrong with the 7800xt...like you said by the spec the 7900 GRE should be the real 7800xt. Maybe one day the 7900GRE will make a separate release with different naming...I mean we had the CPU 5600x3d chip released on microcenter as an exclusive item...so it is not out of the realm of possibilities =)

    I am about to return my MERC 7800 XT Quik and get this one instead (my 7800XT costs about 490€ and 7900GRE costs 550€, same model as you), I have seen some benchs and thbey state that performance is very similar... but how are the temps on this one? My 7800XT actually reaches 59c core and 84c on memory junction at 1500rpm. How good or bad is the 7900 GRE? Greetings!

    If AMD released this as 7800 XT and the 60cu as 7800 and maybe 7700 XT for 569 and 479 and 399 respectively.. if would have been an absolute win for everyone including AMD.

    • @andersjjensen
      @andersjjensen 8 месяцев назад +1

      That would have been an absolute loss for AMD. The cards would be out of stock constantly. RNDA3 targeted a 70% uplift but managed 36% at power parity (6950XT and 7900XT are both 355W). The thing just is that these chips are as expensive to manufacture as if they could have charged the prices that would have come with a 70% uplift. So AMD is only producing cards with whatever wafer supply is left once they've stuffed as many Epyc, Threadripper and Ryzen chips into the channels as they an possibly get away with.
      AMD is pricing their cards EXACTLY where they sell at the same rate as they are produced. They're clearly content with poaching the oddball "swing vote" here and there, but basically only keeping existing Radeon users happy to upgrade, should they choose to.

    • @christophermullins7163
      @christophermullins7163 7 месяцев назад

      @@andersjjensen yeah I agree with amd doing what they should be. The prices are appropriate for the supply. I suppose I shouldn't have said AMD but had AMD had huge supply then they could have taken market share.
      I've been thinking for years now that large companies don't just compete.. they help each other grow the market as a whole first and foremost and of course make maximum profit while they're at it. My hunch is that there is communication between these companies. Nvidia would be fucked if AMD completely left the market.

      @@christophermullins7163 If TSMC had accidentally overbuilt fab capacity and were constantly asking AMD if they'd like any more wafers, then this situation would be very very different.
      People don't realise that Intel, despite having posted 5 quarters in a row of less than 5% profit, they STILL has more raw cash in the bank than AMD is worth. AMD is still paying off $4 billion in debt from "the dark days". AMD has to play every turn carefully, because cancelling orders with TSMC is expensive AND it hurts the wafer price on the next purchase. AMD books wafer agreements 3-5 years in advance, and they have to assume that they might not have the most desirable product in every category. So they can only safely book what they reasonably expect to be able to sell, no matter what.
      I've tracked "the big three" for almost three decades now, and AMD has always been the wild one. It's kind of the company profile that they're never satisfied with the status quo. They like the long shots, the disruptive technologies and the things that nerds get excited about. And they're hungry. They will gladly take someone else's 1 billion dollar business and turn it into their 700 million dollar business, if that's what it takes. They've taken both Intel and Nvidia to court over unlawful practices a number of times..... so no, I don't think they're engaging in price fixing or any of that nonsense.

    really wish amd released the RX 7950 XTX but probably didn't have enough to mass produce and sell heres to hoping next gen in 2025 has that performance higher then the 4090 and yet still cheaper.
    edit: also hope the next flagship has over 110+ CU's and 24gb's vram and 10k+ shader unites as well as a 512bit bus we haven't seen a bus size like that since well Fermi Series from nvidia
    edit 2: great vid as always hope more games don't do forced raytracing like avatar does, I'd rather run at native high settings with 60+ fps and not take a performance hit with raytracing for more shiny windows/water/better lighting/shadows I get raytracing is the future but not interested till the next 5 years passes and they make massive improvements to everything it brings to the table with better performance on lower end cards and not just mainly for mid/high end.

    • @andersjjensen
      @andersjjensen 8 месяцев назад +1

      You can't get to 24GB on a 512 bit bus. You can get to 16GB, 32GB or 64GB as GDDR6 is available in 1GB and 2GB modules, and each module takes 32 bits of bus-width. 512/12 is 16, so you need 16 modules. Unless you clam-shell (which makes for a more expensive board) the modules, then you can go to 32 modules. But it all has to be symmetrical. That is, you can't clams-shell just some of the modules.

    • @evilvash0

      well w/e amount just to meet it to get 512 bit and also give it more of everything else I suggested I really want amd to start hammering nvidia in pure rasterization over ray tracing for cheaper then w/e nvidias flagship is gonna be all i'm saying@@andersjjensen

    No, the real 7800 XT is the 7900 XT.
    If you see the old GPUs Navi 21 XTX = RX 6900 XT and Navi 21 XT = RX 6800 XT
    With a correct name the top RDNA3 GPUs are:
    Navi 31 XTX = RX 7900 XT
    Navi 31 XT = RX 7800 XT
    Navi 31 XL = RX 7800
    Navi 32 XT and XL could be 7700 series

    • @AncientGameplays
      @AncientGameplays  7 месяцев назад +1

      Not really because before you had not a navi 22 die with 60CUs, now you do, so the 7800 non XT could ne navi 32, ans the 7800xt 7900xt and 7900xtx could use navi 31

    • @DanyM82
      @DanyM82 7 месяцев назад

      @@AncientGameplays Ok I understand, but RDNA1 was also very different from RDNA2.
      However, with RDNA2 there was a big jump in performance for the same CUs even though the dimensional process did not change.
      With RDNA3 this improvement did not occur.
      The only card that had a good performance improvement with the same specs is the 7800 XT compared to the 6800.
      Thinking about it, maybe it's not strange because Navi 32 is the latest GPU produced and they have probably already refined the production to obtain better performance. Or maybe it comes down to the wider bandwidth and the GPU running at higher frequencies.
      Maybe with RDNA4 we will still have a good increase, but the fact remains that RDNA3 is a bad series in terms of prices and card names.
      I hope my english is not too bad, i'm Italian and has buy a 7800 XT in november. Very good card but a little bit expansive...

      @AncientGameplays It was a good GPU, but the naming scheme was jank.
      You had the regular HD 7870, based on Pictairn architecture with 1280CU.
      Then there was the 7870 XT, a cut-down variant of the flagship Tahiti GPU with 1536CU. It really should've been called the HD 7930.
      Fun fact, the 7870 XT could even crossfire with the 7970, but not the regular 7870.
