I love you chose these movies. I feel most directors you choose, their increasing budget is chronological, but this one has the biggest budget movie releasing before one of the lower budget moves. Interesting to see what he does right after shooting a 180 million dollar movie.
He ruined Thor and made chris hemsworth do a scene he did not want to do that included him getting naked and he also openly admitted he wanted to ruin the movie what do you mean.
This is a bit like Kubrick shooting 2001 a space odyssey on a big budget, the making the low budget A clockwork orange. Both classics in their own right.
I honestly think that boy is probably the film that encapsulates Taika's style the best, from his surrealist aspects to his balance between comedy and drama, most importantly is a movie about a child experiencing or understanding a sobering reality about their life, that most of his movies talk about, but boy being inspired, and probably transferred complete aspects of his actual life, is the one that I feel the most honest, he just has an amazing sensibility about all his films and understands the point of view of a child in such a realistic way
Taika is such an incredible director, he has such a unique tone to his movies which you can pick even if you don’t know he directed it. Also great video with engaging visuals btw.
@@Bobb-wv9wd Not according to his wikipedia he wasn't. He directed 5/12 episodes before it was rightfully cancelled. Thats a pretty heavy involvement. No one else directed more episodes than him.
Taika Waititi has become one of my favourite directors of all time just from jojo rabbbit, which is also because of the fact he is the first time i have ever paid attention to the directing of a movie. Im an actress myself, and hv directed small shows and films here and there, but Waititi puts so much personal flare and style into his films that its hard to miss and not appreciate. Even when i direct, or watch others direct, they're goal is to just make the show as good as it can be, not neccessarily give it personal flavour, which is why i love Waititi. I hope in my future endeavours i can be as great as him one day.
I personally love jojo rabbit I have a lot of respect for that time period and I feel it illustrated the way propagand can effect the minds of young children and how real connection can help them grow and leave the mindset they've been trapped in. It's also got beautiful cimnatography and most this have an underlying meaning
@@Norwoodg00ner he directed the fly and ozymandias, the lowest and highest rated episodes of the show. I feel like this is evidence he fell from grace. He made brilliance from already brilliance, and then made star wars die. It hadn't died until the last jedi, as yes the force awakens was bad but no one considered too much. Then the last jedi split it all apart.

Small or pedantic difference perhaps but visual effects would be umbrella term for all the imagery created/manipulated in post-production. CGI is a significant and important part of that but is not the umbrella term for all that work. Otherwise great stuff as always! Thanks for putting out such insightful videos.
I’m not into Marvel cos it basically feels like fatigue at this point but there is definitely some cinematic charms and sensibilities with Taika! Probably one of the most exciting Hollywood directors out there today in terms of his body of work (predominantly comedy which is pretty amazing too)
“Acting requires a lot of practice in manipulating your emotions in a controlled way.” You don’t wanna manipulate your emotions in a controlled way. You feel your emotions and channel them.(Coming from an actor.)
I admire Taika Waititi for his directing style and offbeat charm. He’s also a huge influence to my sense of humour. His storytelling are also touching, natural and quirky. Hope he continues make new films.
"He's a friend from work" is a really bad example here of what Taika means when he says a lot of jokes feel like they were written a year before they were shot. The line was from a Make a Wish kid who was on set when it was shot, this was very well publicized. For such a well-researched video essay this was a bad choice.
Taika's movie is great for unforced comedy , Thor love and thunder : Hold my nuts! (no hate to Taika , before thor 4 i watched his two movies and simply loved them though couldn't bear that he made that last one)
Hunt for the wilderpeople was an absolutely amazing movie, I loved it when I first saw it. Shame that it’s so neglected outside of NZ and my home country of Australia
in other words, the smaller the movie, the more it feels like actually making a movie. Once its a blockbuster-size it's more like making a product that you have to manage like some production line manager.
That’s kind of how it goes now, ironically higher budgets mean less practical aspects for most big studios. Obviously some blockbusters don’t fall victim to that but those only come from critical darlings
I'm sorry but Thor and JoJo aren't even in the same league as Hunt for the Wilderpeople. That movie showed he was a one trick pony and he'll never come close to that quality again
Ryan Reynolds has a great line where he says Deadpool's $58 million is the cocaine budget on Thor: Ragnarok. Very curious to hear Taika himself say the main difference is "catering" 😂😂
Thanks for a fine video. Once again, it is good to be reassured that there is no rational connection between money and quality. Although I absolutely did not like "Jojo Rabbit" I will not deny it had some cinematic qualities, whereas (as Scorsese put it) the not cinema, but theme park "Thor: Ragnarok" on a budget of more than 12 "Jojo Rabbit" movies were so empty, indifferent, and not even funny. Compared to "Thor" it is a great experience and very entertaining to sit on the balcony and watch for 2 hours and 10 minutes. It is not a critique of Taika Waititi, of course it is great with good catering and everyone needs to make some money.
I really don’t like how little room the MCU gives directors to express themselves in, but I’ll admit that Ragnarok was definitely one of the very few exceptions. Even if it wasn’t written by him, that movie does feel very in Watiti’s wheelhouse. I just wish it looked way better, the first two Thor’s were vastly inferior to this yet still look really good. Such a shame how bad marvel visuals have fallen
I wish Hunt for the Wilderpeople got a bit more international recognition, it really is a great film and its loved here in NZ.
I’m from the Philippines and I absolutely love that film! Would love to visit NZ one day :)
its one of my favorite films! im in america
In Ireland I had to watch it for school and it’s great
great film in the UK
Ngl didn’t know people even watched it in other countries, apart from Australia
I like his lower budget movies, I think it forces him to really utilize what he has and make very touching human stories.
This is a really cool concept. It also shows how important a director is since their style stands out no matter the budget.
