I used to put the trans on my lap with engine jacked up. Wriggle it while twisting the output flange. I was in my 20’s back then, now i’m 60.lol. I like your tool, great design. I just drove my Tr-6 yesterday.

    I'm really enjoying your Channel.
I've had 3 TR6. I thought I was an expert. Always replace the throwout bearing arm shear pin/bolted with a high tensile one. There is nothing more annoying then having to learn about that shear bolt after you get the transmission in. Thank you.

Good to see you again. I bought your MG Engine Rebuild CD from Moss and it helped me wonderfully. All the best.

Brilliant, perfect timing. I will be helping re-install his newly re-built o'drive box next week. I haven't done one in 40 plus years. This will help greatly.. Thanks from So Oregon, USA

Great idea, thanks. One tip is to not forget two bolts are bellhousing dowel bolts 3/8 shank.

To line up the pilot shaft, I use a long bolt, with the bolt head cut off and then rounded. The modified bolt is threaded into one of the upper bolt holes, in the back of the block, before offering up the transmission. Once the transmission slides onto the bolt and is square (level) to the back of the engine, the pilot shaft is lined up with the clutch disk and slides in with a slight twist of the rear flange of the transmission (tranny must be in gear).

Hi, Yes I do the same type of thing from time to time, but not very block has threaded bolt holes and I use two bolts rather then just one, one on either side. As you still need to maneuver the tranny, which on bolts is still quite heavy. If there is only a rear plate rather than threaded hole in the block then I lock them in place with nuts either side of the hole on the rear plate, take them out when the tranny is up to the nut. (don't drop the nut into the bellhousing)
But the bolts still require your lifting and sometimes a lot of physical effort to get the tranny in place. I find the tool in this case lot easier, unfortunately I've not been getting any younger for quite awhile now. But yes the bolts work well. TR range of the Triumph's have good access to the tranny at least with the floors coming out.

I had already taken my exhaust system pipes out to remove the differential and used a floor Jack supporting the transmission from below to remove it (support from below instead of from above here). Hoping I can reinstall it the same way. :)

Couldn't you get the same result by putting the gearbox on a low transmission jack and rolling it forward once you got the right height?

Wish I had seen this when I had my Spitfire torn apart. Sure would have made putting the tranny back in much easier!!!
