Anne-Marie, Xavier HUBERT-BRIERRE and their friend Michel GUISS DJOMOU installed six large mirrors in the Gabonese jungle near Nyonié in order to film the reaction of wild animals from different angles as they encounter their reflection.
Members of a gorilla family from this jungle come and go as they please in front of these mirrors. Just as in humans, self- recognition in primates is not an innate ability. The ability to recognise one’s own reflection is the result of a training process that little by little allows the human, or primate to understand the mirror’s properties:
Among young humans, this training is easier at home, in the company of their parents who have done this training and who have the words to explain to their young child the properties of the mirror. This learning in the mirror can last several weeks and it is only around the age of 2 years that the young human understands that in the mirror it is not a play partner who makes the same movements as he does. If, without him noticing, his mother puts a lipstick mark on his forehead and places him in front of the mirror, discovering this mark on his reflection, he will then put his hand on his own forehead. He will have passed the mirror test.
Among gorillas, in the insecurity of the jungle learning with his parents who have not done this and who do not speak, this is much more difficult even for intelligent individuals. This young gorilla wants to understand the mirror's secret. He attempts to get to known this never before seen gorilla who copies its every movement. He approches the stranger, the stranger approches as well, when he tries to touch this newcomer, the newcomer also reaches out its hand but its fingers are met with a cold, flat surface rather than the warm touch the gorilla was expecting. For this reason, he checks if this other young gorilla would not be behind the mirror. He tries to press its lips against the stranger or lick its face the result is the same, once again the gorilla encounters this cold, hard surface.
The silverback considers his reflection, has come into his territory in order to steal his females. Being a non-violent he does not wish to trigger a direct confrontation and therefore he avoids looking at this intruder directly in the eyes (act of defiance in silverbacks)
    -----

Imagine not having watch a mirror until you are 18 and then you find one with nobody to explain to you what it is. It would be scary at first, then awkward, and finally you'll realise in awe that's actually your reflection, and you see your face and everything for first time.

*A comment like yours cheers us up after:*
      - my wife and I have spent days alone in the Gabonese forest for the maintenance of our mirrors and numerous cameras traps, to change the SD, cells, batteries, to clean the objectives, to remove the fallen branches in their field of vision, to go up on foot the bed of the marigots to find zones of crossing of animals to install new traps there etc... Drenched by tornadoes, the body covered with insect bites of all kinds (horseflies, gorilla flies, tsetse, black ants, magnan ants etc.) and unfortunately the number of cameras refusing to work increases because of the humidity rate of 95%.
      - reading after some comments reproaching us for the traumas generated by our large mirrors placed in a remote region of the jungle in Gabon, where wild animals live freely. They can go to these mirrors, as they see fit, and stay in front of them, as long as they want. No food is placed by humans next to mirrors to encourage them to come.
      - editing of videos with for each one a description in English which is not our native language and then put them online to show the beauty of Gabonese fauna, talk about poachers, show how elephants who have managed to get away from a wire snare trap, treat the deep cut made by this trap, show how elephants pick mangos, self recognition in mirrors that is not innate both among humans than among primates and other mammals and so on...

So, he discovered an unknown physics, did experiments with it, and tried to reason what was happening. That probably qualifies him as a scientist for his era; few in number even in his species . And we are here watching ever more curiously at him thinking- it's just a mirror even our babies know to work with. Just like 100,000 years from now, our children would look at us and say, it's just a quantum wormhole our babies play with.

It’s amazing that something as simple as a mirror gives us amazing insight into wild animal behavior, very fascinating.
My cat actually recognizes herself in the mirror, one morning she hopped up on the sink and very deliberately raised one paw up and down was very much like “This is.....me?”
It’s very interesting how animals behave, unaware of what they look like, and for the few that can recognize themselves, makes you wonder what think they are without being able to see themselves.

    • @XHB06400CANNES
      @XHB06400CANNES  4 года назад +12

No cat, no home cat, even yours, has the intellectual capacity to recognize itself in a mirror: If your cat sees your reflection in the mirror, she is able to turn its head to check that you are present behind her. Your cat is therefore able to recognise you in a mirror, but not herself. After the first few mirror exposures, your cat will consider the odourless animal in the mirror, is without interest and does not present any danger for herself.
To date, no cat in the world, however intelligent it may be, is able to recognize itself in a mirror. Put an odourless red coloration on one of your cat's ears without it noticing. Then go with it to the mirror. Will it try to scratch its own red ear visible on its reflection in the mirror? No, because he does not have the cognitive abilities to pass the mark test (Gallup). Your cat doesn't know what it looks like so it is unable to recognise itself in the mirror.
A blackback gorilla has the intellectual capacity to learn in the mirror as every human has also done and finally understand that its reflection is itself :
ruclips.net/video/ORbg3fAE2SU/видео.html (Gabonese Gorilla family all have cool reactions to their mirror reflection except for the silverback)
ruclips.net/video/C3SQd1o_r00/видео.html (A Young Gorilla's Reactions to his Reflections in Mirrors In Gabonese Jungle: a Dancer? a Drummer?)
A silverback gorilla, not having done this apprenticeship when he was a blackback, could do it too, now that he has become a silverback (a family head), but for that learning it is necessary to look at his reflection, an attitude impossible for him because to look another silverback straight in the eyes is a sign of distrust, challenge or fight that he wants to avoid because he is a peaceful primate.

Have you been successful in clearly recognizing your own image clearly by leaning over a puddle of rain water, in a pond ? Maybe just your shade on a sunny day? On the water's surface its own image cannot be reflected perpendicularly but laterally. For this reason your neighbour, under some light conditions and some quality from the bottom of the pond, can see distinctly your face but not his own. Thus, an animal cannot clearly see itself in a pond or a puddle and therefore, it cannot learn in the mirror because for it as well as for humans, self recognition in a mirror is not innate. *Curiosity-a sign of intelligence. The non-self awareness in a mirror is not a sign of lack of intelligence!* As in humans, self-recognition in gorillas is also the result of learning to look in the mirror. To do this, one must be exposed to one's reflection many times and examine it quietly: one's face, body and the gestures (attitudes) it copies. While mirror training can be *successful in blackback gorillas* (females, adolescents and children), it is *compromised among silverbacks* where looking another silverback, or its reflection, straight in the eyes is a sign of defiance, an attitude that these peaceful males avoid.
In my description attached to this video, I explain that behavior in silverback gorillas and the behaviour of other members (blackbacks) of his family. These animals are capable of recognizing each other even though they seem very similar to us. So while they can't tell what they look like themselves, they can see the apes in the reflections look exactly like the other ones in real life and thus makes me wonder if their reactions are about the mirror phenomena itself, not so much seeing other different apes on the other side. When you think about it, the only time they act aggressive is with their own reflection , which they don't recognize.

Now you're standing in front of the mirror. All the chimps, which you recognize, are standing behind you, but you also see them reflected in the mirror. You recognize them. The other chimps are exactly the same in real life and in the mirror. The only chimp you do not recognize in the mirror is yourself.
So the level of complexity of their reaction is a lot more than it simply appears to us.

We are not comfortably sitting in our armchairs, to publish without any description, pieces of videos copied from the Internet and put end to end. A comment like yours cheers us up after my wife and I have spent days alone in the Gabonese forest for the maintenance of our mirrors and numerous cameras traps, to change the SD, batteries, batteries, to clean the objectives, to remove the fallen branches in their field of vision, to go up on foot the bed of the marigots to find zones of crossing of animals to install new traps there etc... Drenched by tornadoes, the body covered with insect bites of all kinds (horseflies, gorilla flies, tsetse, black ants, magnan ants etc.) and unfortunately the number of cameras refusing to work increases because of the humidity rate of 95%. Then, back in the camp, we do the editing with for each video a description in English which is not our native language and then put them online to show the beauty of Gabonese fauna, talk about poachers, show how elephants who have managed to get away from a wire snare trap, treat the deep cut made by this trap, show how elephants pick mangos, self recognition in mirrors that is not innate both among humans than among primates and other mammals and so on...

What happens when he realizes it’s a mirror and looks at his reflection in the mirror. Will he not copy this new mirror training behavior when he’s in contact with a real silverback? Couldn’t this training actually become detrimental and even deadly to the natural behavior of the silverback?!

This video is about an teenage gorilla (blackback gorilla).
      In case of a silverback:
      (1) he cannot realize that it is a mirror because he does not know the existence and properties of these objects
      2) he cannot learn in the mirror because he cannot look his reflection straight in the eyes
      3) his attitude towards his reflection became calmer as he noticed the reactions of his family to their reflection. For him, this silver back that moves in the mirror without any noise or screams, does not present any danger. His reflection has therefore adopted the same behaviour and is no longer aggressive.
      4) On the other hand, if in the future, he meets an aggressive, screaming and noisy silver back that has penetrated his domain to kidnap females, he will know how to defend his family.

    • @unknowncreation020
      @unknowncreation020 2 года назад

It wouldn’t confuse them that much, it’s highly doubtful that a gorilla would change its whole behavior due to looking at a mirror a couple of times. They would only understand that a mirror is showing a mimic of themselves instead of a different ape altogether. But once out of the mirrors view they can tell their back to their normal lifestyle. The social skills they’ve learned in their entire life would come first. It might even help them improve their coordination by being able to differentiate the two but other then that it’s not going to change much.

I have seen a video where a chimp uses the mirror to get something out of his eye, so it seemed obvious the chimp worked out it was a reflection. And like human, there would be some clever ones and some dumb ones so each may see things different. I wonder how they would react if two mirrors were placed facing each other and the chimps walked between them.

The only question is: "who placed the mirrors back then!?"
