    Hi. If you don't understand my English, I'm sorry, I'm a Bolivian and I'm still learning it. This is for people who are surprised to know that Pablo was a customer of Roberto. Cocaine is made from a plant (Erythroxylum coca).
    Pablo started to buy cocaine from Roberto Suárez in the 70's, when he just created the Medellin Cartel. And why weren't they doing it themselves in Colombia? Simply because the coca plant doesn't grow in Colombia. The coca plant grows well in the jungle and at very high altitudes, for example in "Los Yungas" region. This plant is native to the Andean zone of Chile, Bolivia and Peru, it is said that the first to discover it were the Incas.
    The coca leaf in Bolivia is chewed as energizing to work (like coffee) and to be able to breathe at altitudes above 3000MSL Unfortunately this plant was made known by its chemical alkaloid (cocaine) and not by its natural leaf. But in Bolivia of course it's totally legal and normal to plant it.
    The Bolivian Roberto Suárez Gómez took advantage of this because he saw a feasible business. He started building cocaine laboratories in the middle of the Bolivian Amazon jungle and in the zone of "Los Yungas" in the end of 60s and created the first cartel in Bolivia called "La Corporación". At first the Medellin cartel bought cocaine at $ 8,000 per kilo. La Corporación then sold cocaine base paste to Colombian cartels and they finished and distributed it in the east of United States and the finished cocaine was sold directly to Mexican cartels for distribution in the west of United States. Roberto received untold amounts of money. But as detectives and journalists discovered the corruption between Bolivia and the United States, the empire of Robert was falling.
    Then Pablo had an even better idea. Colombia is very well located with departure to Asia by the Pacific ocean, with departure to Europe by the Atlantic ocean and leaving to the United States by the north. So he thought if Colombia also has Amazon rainforest "Why I'm buying coca from the Bolivians? The Medellin cartel began planting coca in the Colombian Amazon jungle and the rest of history everyone knows it.
    Roberto was arrested by the DEA in 1988, and Pablo took over of the production and distribution of 80% of the world's cocaine and 75% in the United States because the Cali cartel and the Mexican cartels also wanted cities in USA.

      @DdDd-gd1rr 6 лет назад +19

      TheTallMan35 Yes. Except, it is a mild drug when chewed as a plant, analogous to coffee in effect.

      Dd Dd Just like tobacco here in the states. I've heard the plant itself isn't hazardous. It's those addiction inducing chemicals that cigarette companies add to it that can cause health problems.

      suntansuperman26
      It is.
      Actually drug trade today travels within large corporation's shipments without them even knowing it.
      Aome organizations infiltrate their men into the companies themselves or large shipping companies, when a large shipment of say 50.000 desktop printers takes off from a factory one of the trucks manned by infiltrates takes a detour in a place where that part of the shipment is filled with the "goods" quickly.
      The truck then joins the rest of the trucks that are unloading at the harbor and the part of "stuffed" shipments ends inside a 20-30 container shipment all under one bill with thousands of identical boxes of legitimate big famous companies.
      They have the barcodes of the "stuffed" boxes.
      When the ship unloads in it's destination harbor the buying organization has men infiltrated into the harbor workers that scan the shipment for the right barcodes.
      Payment is made before receiving the barcodes through a "drug broker" that works online under strong security measures with "friendly" banks in weird island countries, the brokes then laudries the money through several fake small companies or other methods and delivers it under false names into coded bank accounts of the shippers.
      That's what Italian mafia prosecutors say at least (and they also say confidentially that they will never be able to stop this).

    Great journalism! Definitely one of my all-time favorites (Scarface) and the best movies are always based on factual people and events; my guess is that the character of “Tony Montana” was thrown into the script for entertainment and a slight smoke screen...The best way to fool the people is to keep them entertained!
