Hello! Yes, it can be a bit scary so I would recommend going with someone or staying in areas like le blanc as they should be a bit safer, albeit away from most of the attractions.
Thank you, Maquina! Great question! Most of my solo pics in Rio were taken by the tour mates I had made through a formal tour (organized through my hotel). The areas where we were at were also highly touristy and safer to take out your picture to take some selfies by yourself (as I took when I was at Christ the Redeemer) but be very weary of taking pictures in general neighborhoods and the beach. Even your flip flops will be stolen at the beach! So be weary. Cell phones will even be stolen out of your Uber if your window is open!
