Not to brag, but I live in Adelaide. I can get up at 10am, visit every train station, every bus stop, every tram stop, say hello to every resident in the state, and be back home at 12pm in time for lunch.
Really well done! I don't think anyone has ever done the challenge and documented it to this extent. Interesting observation about the overhead gantries going from double to single south of Alamein. They were put there after the line closed, just to carry the feeder cables - that section was never actually electrified. Maybe they had some plans to reopen that bit? I agree it would be great to have that connection today.
Thanks mate. That's really interesting that they put the cables in after the line closed, but still did it in such a similar style to railway overhead wiring. It certainly fooled me! I'm a very big fan of your channel. It's such a privilege having a person like you make such interesting, high quality videos about the Melbourne network, of all train networks!
@@melbournerailwayvideos Maybe the rail overheads were redundant rail structures and repurposed by SEC for a High Voltage Feeder. Get to know the difference between HV and LV grid aerials and HV rail aerial wiring. Hint: street grid has 3 - 4 cables... rail has 1.
@@melbournerailwayvideos Yeah, past rail use. They are not street or grid poles. If they carry any street lighting each fitting would require isolation transformers as a safety separation from rail HV supply to street LV circuits, if a stanchion came down. These are largish steel boxes mounted on the structure. Someone else mentioned some of those aerials tie between the two rail lines, probably for dual redundancy to feed sections of the lines if an outage occurs. It's probably only manually switched in when needed. I revisited the video and see Rail HV 1kV DC (1 only insulator disc) strung something like panto lines (but not serviceable for that) and 3phase HV AC (possibly 2.2kV, being multiple stacked insulator discs) vertically arranged.
901 driver here . . . Gotta have a toilet stop occasionally and Sth Morang station is one of the most convenient 😊 (plus our timing points at Kurrak Rd Frankston bound or Epping Station Airport bound are both quite generous!)
This was such an entertaining video! Excellent work! I've often thought of just doing one line for fun, not sure if I could handle the whole network but it would be fun to try. Metro should run a charity day where teams race each other to see who can complete the network the quickest. I don't know how'd it work but that'd be absolute madness haha
Well done guys! Me and a friend did this in July 2002, starting and ending at Flinders St (something like 0450 to 2356), using just trains and going up and back each line. We had to skip Watergardens because we got a very smart person to work out the schedule, and then Watergardens opened, and it would have been a zero-minute turnaround. The lines were: Werribee, Williamstown, Keilor Plains, Broadmeadows, Upfield (11am or so), Epping, Hurstbridge, Lilydale, Belgrave, Alamein, Pakenham, Cranbourne, Frankston, Sandringham, Glen Waverley. Then I took the last train home to Newmarket! I would have been happy never to have caught another train that night… I was pretty tired of trains by the end of the day, but we had friends join us here and there, and one time a friend delayed a train at Parliament so we had time to change. Like most of my train adventures I didn’t document it ☹️ It would be impossible to do this way now with the line extensions unless you used night trains. The London Tube all stations model incorporating buses and walking makes it more viable and at the end of the day you might be very slightly less sick of trains 😀
I'm amazed that you were able to do all that in one day using trains alone! I didn't even think it was possible to get anywhere near that far on just trains!
@@melbournerailwayvideos It was a really tight thing-the Watergardens extension made it difficult and the Craigieburn extension made it impossible. _Maybe_ you could do it on a Friday or Saturday with night trains, but it would require more stamina than I have, haha.
I’m fairly sure that this record will be the first and last of its kind due to it most likely becoming the only attempt with East Pakenham but before opening of the metro tunnel
