  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Michael Gavin, associate Professor of human dimensions of natural resources researches biological diversity, and discusses the importance that history, language and tradition have in the preservation of culture.
    Associate Professor of human dimensions of natural resources in the Warner College of Natural Resources. His research examines the origins of human and biological diversity, which has led him to work with indigenous communities in over a dozen countries.
    About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    Do not confuse 'cultural diversity' with 'multiculturalism'. His point really is to respect and preserve cultural identity. The comments against multiculturalism are merely proving his point. Whether its indigenous cultures or 'christian': aren't these worth preserving?

    • @cadethumann8605

      Artur Terho So what is your suggestion? That we force foreigners out and start being intolerant of other races? If you ask me, that sounds cruel. And boring (as I like having a variety of people. Just having one culture and/or race is boring).

    • @cadethumann8605

      Artur Terho Again, what is your suggestion? That we go back to isolationism? That there should be no foreigners? Should I stop being friends with those who aren't my ethnicity?
      Do not get me wrong, I do agree that having completely different values isn't unity. However, as long as people, regardless of race and practices, can put aside their differences and work together, I don't mind.
      Again, are you suggesting that we go back to pre-civil rights days and become intolerant of one another?

    • @cadethumann8605
      @cadethumann8605 6 лет назад +4

      Artur Terho I will say this: I agree that forced diversity is unneeded. I also see your point about foreigners owning parts of countries being an issue as that can potentially take away a country's identity (unless if the foreigner has adapted to the country's laws and culture as well as become a citizen of that country. I also don't mind if they simply own businesses).

    • @8270361507

      The idea of preserving cultures IMO is a tough thing to do. Haven't cultures been shifting in the past generations and changes constantly. Languages die, shift, traditions fade and new ones are created. In addition new concepts of culture is added due to interaction of foreigners and so forth. I honestly don't think we can preserve everything. Humans progress and change overtime. It has been happening since the beginning of time. And I'm sure people don't want to adopt aspects of a culture that are outdated or morally wrong (i.e forced marriages).

    I like to use a pallet of paint as an analogy for multiculturalism. On their own, the colours of paint are vibrant, beautiful, defined and special. Some colours naturally blend together, to make new exciting shades and colours, when mixed correctly, these colours can really compliment each other. However, when it’s done wrong, whether that’s mixing paints that don’t go together, or mixing too many colours together without thought, the original colours begin to loose what made them special and loose their vibrancy and in the end, you’re left with a dull shade of brown in the middle, with no defining features, and nothing that makes it special. Then you realise the original colours have been mixed during the creation of the shade in the middle so now; there’s no reason to travel and experience these new colours as there is nothing special about them and no reason to go there

    It's important to understand and appreciate cultural diversity. Every culture has its own beliefs, values, and traditions which make our world more diverse. By recognizing and respecting different cultures, we can promote mutual understanding and build a more inclusive and tolerant society. Embracing diversity enables us to learn from one another, broaden our perspectives, and create a more connected world.

    Having cultural diversity is a good thing for us. It gives different view points and how life works for other people and how diverse life can be. We should be worry about losing the culture diversity because it has a huge impact in life. Michael Gavin has a very good point about culture diversity being the rights of people. People have diversity that tell them who they are and that very important not to ignore.

    Ideology and the political course are also part of a culture. Diversity is the opposite of unity, and when the unity in a country is too low there lies a breeding ground for social conflict. A multicultural society can be positive under strict conditions. Some of these are: Allow only cultures with similar core values. Keep the "guest cultures" limited in numbers to prevent a power struggle. Create awareness for the dominant home culture and the humble guest cultures. When the cultural differences have become too big, you either get a split up like north and south sudan, like Belgium and the Netherlands, or a bloody civil war. History has proven so countless times

    Cultural diversity is great when you think about how it creates people who view the world in different perspectives. But the thing is the majority of human beings are arrogant and so full of ego, we are so far from the respect each other’s way of living. All cultures will try to impose theirs on other culture and since this rarely works, the act comes off as rude and oppressive and the cycle of hate continues.

I'm not even sure why I scrolled down to comments, but I did, and now I regret it. Why are you all threatened by cultural diversity?
    Let us play devil's advocate. What if other races were out to get whites, wouldn't it be better to learn as much as you can about that culture in order to educate yourselves, and arm yourselves with ammunition to oppose "the enemy"..?
    Knowledge is power my friends! Additionally, balance is a good thing...some diversity is better than none at all.

    • @Illumirage
      @Illumirage 5 лет назад +4

      Because "diversity" is snuffing out the white race, that's why. Take Britain for example. I mean large cities that WERE ALWAYS dominated by whites are now majority Muslim. London, the capital of Britain is majority non-white and has a non-white mayor that is hostile toward whites. Britain is standing back watching their country being stolen from them and can't say or do a damn thing. This is all brought to you by diversity. You might understand, it might hit home a little more if Africa were being sold off brick by brick but it isn't, so you can't quite seem to put it in perspective. But diversity at least for America and Europe will lead to the end of America and Europe.
      How is this this hard to understand?

If we can do that, we'll be better prepared for tomorrow; but if we don't do that, then our grandchildren are going to grow up in a world that is gar less diverse and they won't even know it." We are not animals by any means but the term invasive species somewhat fits the narrative he presented. If an ecosystem (society/nation) is presented an animal (in this case humans with different ideologies, culture etc..) this could disrupt homeostasis by making the original species who inhabits that area decline (in this case the existing culture will be disrupted due to failed assimilation). However, if an animal that was presented to an ecosystem does not negatively affect the homeostasis (successful assimilation) then it will not become an issue. As complex we humans are, we are susceptible to this type of instability, especially since we value our own uniqueness and diversities without compromise to others.

Most immigrants hold on tobghe dream of integration but it's all fake. Even children of generations of immigrants born in the west still get to face the harsh reality that ethnicity always means you would not be seen the same. Cultures come and go and society tends to gravitate to the most economically and politically powerful cultures. If you want to prosper in the dominant culture, which is almost always the most economically powerful, you conform at least to the degree that you must to prosper economically. I am quite sure that as China and India begin to rise in dominance, the dominant culture will change and my descendants may well be speaking Mandarin in the future.
    No, we are not conforming our society and schools to accommodate each and every culture. If you only go to our schools 4 days a week, you will be less well prepared than someone who went 5 days per week.

    Diversity of itself is not necessarily strength, in fact it can be a detriment. Certain cultures will prey criminally on other cultures because they are different. diversity is not strength, unity is strength. Now, if you merge diverse ideas in unity, yes, that is strength. But If you have Sharia law in one community conflicting with constitutional law in another, criminal street gangs attacking other races, dozens of cultures all demanding special treatment, then that is division, it is not strength, it weakens the society and makes it vulnerable. Unity is strength, not diversity.

    I’m of Irish descent. What I didn’t know until recently was the history of Irish enslavement. No I’m not talking about the commonly known version of indentured servitude. But the harsh reality of generational slavery. So, why is this important you ask?
    There can be no question that slavery is front and foremost in the minds of academia and the social justice warriors. Now, imagine how different our society would be if we had taught how whites were enslaved by whites.
    There is also another part of this era that isn’t discussed “ impressment “. Where our US Navy actually abducted men of off the streets and forced into service, with no compensation. Not only were they abducted, they were also flogged, severely.
    Flogging wasn’t outlawed until 1850 on the books. However the practice continued well beyond 1850.
    So these do-gooders spouting about strength-in-diversity have sanitized one aspect of the issue while shoving the other side in our faces. If we can’t overcome this problem known as diversity, we’ll continue to be an even greater fractured nation
