@ all quiet on the western front, its based off of a book made by someone who was in the great war. both are pretty graphic though and are probably some of the heaviest anti-war pieces of media out there.
This is one of the closer movies to war as it gets, they rarely make realistic war movies for people to see how brutal it is. American sniper too had a scene where he was watching a blank screen but his mind was back in war.😔
I would argue American Sniper is the ideological opposite of All Quiet. American Sniper reads more to me like a propaganda film meant to portray the US interest in the middle east as messy but ultimately virtuous and justified by focusing on a single soldier's story of him being a bad ass. There's brutal stuff in the movie, sure, but by and large Chris Kyle is painted as a virtuous hero who was martyred. All Quiet is a potent anti-war film. I think American Sniper, in my opinion, is a pro war film.
@@roilen8131 Yes 100% but American sniper also portrayed PTSD very well. Which i think is what the OG comment alluded to. They glorified the war part but home life was depressing and the movie pushed the message that even if you survive war you'll lose your life there either way. When Chris was regaining meaning he lost his life to another war veteran with PTSD far away from any battlefield. Which i think is almost on par with the same meaningless death 1 minute before the war ended showed on Western front The main characters in this movie also struggle with not knowing how they are going to ever return to a normal world. Almost starting to prefer the battlefield in a weird way. Just like modern veterans and Chris struggled with alot. (They at least did it in the original book and movie from 1930)
@@FredrikSkievan This is a good point too, the PTSD is definitely one of the ugliest aspects of war and any war movie should portray it accordingly. I would say, though, that having PTSD from battle is often still seen by those who haven't fought as a sort of badge of heroism, almost glamorizing the concept as an unfortunate but necessary reality for the sake of freedom. We (not just America, I'm referring to humanity as a whole here) must ask why these people are being subjected to those conditions and if it is really, truly worth it. We should recognize the horrors of PTSD, but take one step further and use that to fuel further questioning.
